General Guidelines 2-3 Selecting the Right P aper Laser printing is a process in volving laser light, electr ostatic discharge, toner , and heat. In addition, as the paper passes through the printer it undergoes cons iderable slidin g, bending, and twisting moti ons.
General Guidelines 2-4 Paper Size Cassettes and an MP tray are available for the paper si zes listed in the table below . The dimensional tolerances are ±0.7 mm (±0.0276 inches) for the length and width. The angle at the corners must be 90° ±0.2°.
General Guidelines 2-5 Paper Weight Equivalence T a ble P aper weight is listed with expression in U.S. bo nd weight (lb) and European metric (g/m²). Th e shaded point indicates the standard weight. T hickness (Caliper) Thick paper is referred to as high-caliper paper and thi n paper as low- caliper paper .
General Guidelines 2-6 Paper Grain When paper is manufactured, it is cut into sheets with the grain running parallel to the le ngth (long grain) or parallel to the width (short grain). Short grain paper ca n cause feeding p roblems in the prin ter . All paper used in the printer should be long grain.
S pecial Paper 2-7 Special P aper This section explai ns printing on special paper . The page printer can use the following types of special paper . In this case, set the media type according to the table below . When using the above types of paper , be sure to use products that are specified for use with photocopiers an d/or page printers.
S pecial Paper 2-8 Adhesiv e-Back ed Labels The basic rule for printing on adhesiv e labels is that the adhesive must never come into contact with any pa rt of the printer . Adhesive paper sticking to the drum or rollers will damage the printer . Be sure to feed label p aper from the MP tr ay .
S pecial Paper 2-9 The table below lists the specificati ons for adhesive label paper . Postcards F an the stack of postcards and align the edges before lo ading them in the MP tray . Make sure the postcards yo u are going to set are not curled. F eeding curled postcards may cause paper jams.
S pecial Paper 2-10 T o avoid jamming due to curled envel opes, do not leave more than approximately 10 printed envel opes stacked in the paper trays d uring multiple enve lope printing. Envelopes should be fed in the fac e-up position, right edge first.
S pecial Paper 2-1 1 Colored Paper Colored paper should satisf y the same conditions a s white bond p aper , listed i n P aper Specifications on page 2-2 . In add ition, the pig ments used in the paper must be able to withstand the heat of fusing during the printing process (up to 200 °C or 392 °F).
Paper T ype 2-12 P aper Type The printer is cap able of printing under the optimum setting for the type of paper being used. Setting the paper type fo r the paper source from the printer’s operator panel will cause the printer to automa tically select the paper source and print in the mode best suited to that type of paper .
3-1 Chapter 3 Maintenance 3 This chapter explai ns how to repl ace the toner container and how to clean parts such as the registration roller and charger wire.
T oner Container Repla cement 3-2 T oner Container R eplacement The toner container in the printer should be replaced as soon as the message display shows Toner low or soon after .
T oner Container Replacemen t 3-3 R eplenishing T oner 1 Open the printer top cover all the way . 2 Pull the lock leve r (blue colored) to the right and gen tly lift the old toner container . Keep the toner cont ainer as level as possible while removing.
T oner Container Repla cement 3-4 4 T ake the new toner container from the bag. 5 With th e label side d o wn, thoroughly shake th e toner container (in the direction of the arrows) ten time s or more. This ensures that the toner is evenly distributed in side.
T oner Container Replacemen t 3-5 8 Push firmly on the top of the tone r container at the positions marked PUSH HERE . When the toner container fi ts into pl ace, it will lock with a clicki ng sound. 9 Close the top cover . It is necessary to clean the inside of the printer af ter repla cing the toner cont ainer .
W aste T oner Box Replacement 3-6 W aste T oner Bo x R eplacement R eplacing the Waste T oner Bo x When replacing the ton er cont ainer , the used waste toner box in t he printer should also be repla ced with the new one from the new toner kit. 1 Open the left cover on the left side of the pr inter .
W aste T oner Box Replacement 3-7 3 Cap the waste toner box after removing from the printer . 4 T o avoid toner sp illing, pl ace the capped w aste toner box in the plastic bag supplied before proper disposal . 5 Open the cap of the new w aste toner box.
W aste T oner Box Replacement 3-8 6 Insert the new waste toner box as shown in the f igure below . The box will be locked when it fi ts into place. 7 Ensure that it is correctly in serted and close the left cover . The printer parts mu st be cleaned wh en replacin g the toner container .
Cleaning 3-9 Cleaning T o avoid print qu ality problems, the following printer parts must be cleaned with every toner container re placemen t. In addi tion, the charger wire and paper transfer unit should be cleaned from time to time, or whenever print quality problems occur .
Cleaning 3-10 Cleaning the Char ger Grid The charger grid is a part located at the bottom of the charger unit, which also needs to be cleaned. Y ou should use a grid cleaner attaching it to the printer and pull out the char ger unit as instructed below .
Cleaning 3-1 1 3 Attach the grid cleaner to the prin ter with the pad at the top, as shown in the figure. 4 Making sure that the charger roller does not come into contact with the grid cleaner pad, repeat a few ti mes the act ion of slowly pulling out and pushin g back in the charger unit, as shown in the fig ure.
Cleaning 3-12 5 Remove the grid cleaner from the pr inter and dispose of it. The grid cleaner is not re-usable. 6 After cleaning the charger wire an d grid, push the cha rger unit all the way in and close the left cov er .
Cleaning 3-13 Paper T r ansfer Unit T o avoid pri nt quality problems due to paper dust and debris, clea n the paper transfer unit in the following manner . 1 While pulling the paper transfer uni t release lever (green colored), pull out the paper transfer unit.
