1-1 Section 1 IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ FIRST. CAUTION LABELS Caution labe ls have been attached to the copier at the followin g locations for safety purposes. BE SUFFICIENTLY CAREFUL to avoid fire or electric shock when remo ving a paper jam or wh en replacing toner.
1-2 INSTALLATION PRECAUTIONS Environment CAUTION Avoid placing the co pier on or in locations which are unstable or not level. Such locations may cause the copier to fall down or fall over. This type of situation presents a danger of personal injury or damage to the copier.
1-3 PRECAUTIONS FOR USE Cautions when using the copier WARNING DO NOT place metallic objects or containers with water (flower vase s, flower pots, cups, etc.) on or near the copier. This of situation presents a danger of fire or electrical shock should they fall inside .
1-4 Other precautions DO NOT place heavy objects on the copier or cause other damage to the copier. DO NOT open th e upper fr ont cover, turn off the power switch, or pull out the power plug during copying. When lifting or moving the copier, contact your service representative.
1-5 SAFETY OF LASER BEAM 1. Safety of laser beam This copier has been certified by the ma nufacturer to Class 1 level under the radiation performance stan dards established by the U.S.DHHS (Department of Health an d Human Services) in 1968. This indicates that the product is safe to use during normal operation and maintenance.

3-1 Section 3 PREPARATIONS Copy paper can either be loaded into the drawer(s) or set on the multi-bypass tray. Note when adding paper After taking new paper out of its pa ckaging, be sure to fan through them a few times to separate the sheets before loading the paper into a drawer or setting it on the multi-bypass tray.
Section 3 PREPARATIONS 3-2 1 Pull the drawer all the way out of the copier. IMPORTANT! When pulling the draw er out of the copier, be sure to support it so that it doesn’t fall out suddenly.
Section 3 PREPARATIONS 3-3 5 Push the draw er secu rely all the way back into the copier until it stops. IMPORTANT! If you will not be using the co pier for a prolonged period of time, remove all pa per from the drawer(s) and seal in its original packaging in order to protect it against moisture.
Section 3 PREPARATIONS 3-4 4 Press down on the stopper ex tension lock and slide the paper stopper towards the rear of the drawer to set the lock into place.

Section 3 PREPARATIONS 3-6 1 Open the multi-bypass tray to wards you until you he ar it click into place. 2 Pull out the multi-bypass extens ion and then flip it open. 3 Adjust the insert guides to fit th e width of the paper that is to be set on the multi-bypass tray.
Section 3 PREPARATIONS 3-7 Selecting the paper size Perform the fo llowing proc edure to use th e operation pane l and select the size of paper th at is set on the multi-bypass tray. There are t wo methods of selecting t he paper size for t he multi-bypass tray: standard and temporary.
Section 3 PREPARATIONS 3-8 Selecting the paper size (temporary setting) 1 Press the Paper Select key until the multi-bypass tray indicator is lit. 2 Press the Number of Co pies / Zoom(+) or Numb er of Copies / Zoom(-) key to select the appropriate paper size.
Section 3 PREPARATIONS 3-9 Thick Paper mode Perform the fo llowing proc edure to select th e Thick Paper m ode when copying o nto thick copy paper (90 g/m² – 163 g/m²).
Section 3 PREPARATIONS 3-10 When copying on to special paper, such as thick paper (90 g/m² – 163 g/m²) and OHP transparencies, ALWAYS use the face-up tray. The face-up tray has a storage capacity of 30 sheets of standard copy paper (80 g/m²) but only 1 sheet of special paper should be stored t here at on e time.
4-1 Section 4 BASIC OPERATION 1 Warm-up Turn the power switch ON ( | ). At the end of warm-up, the Start indicator will light. 2 Selecting the desired functions Select from the copier’s vari ous function s. 3 Selecting the source of paper feed Select the location of the pape r that you want to copy onto.
Section 4 BASIC OPERATION 4-2 5 Adjusting the copy exposure The copy exposure can be manu ally adjusted in all of the image quality mode s, except for the Auto Exposure Adjustment mode. If y ou want to make the ex posure darker, press the right expo sure adjustment key to move the lit indicator to the right.
Section 4 BASIC OPERATION 4-3 9 At the end of copying Finished copies will be ejecte d onto the copy storage table. NOTE The copy storage table has a storage capacity of 150 sheets of standard copy paper (80 g/m²). CAUTION If the copier will not be used for a short period of time (overnight, etc.
Section 4 BASIC OPERATION 4-4 Zoom mode With this mode, the magnification ratio can be set to any 1% increment between 50% and 200%. 1 Press the Recall%/Enter key. The magnification ratio will be shown on copy quantity/magnification displa y and the “%” symbol will light.
Section 4 BASIC OPERATION 4-5 Preset Zoom mode With this mode, the magnification ratio can be set to one of the pre-set ratios: 1 Press the Reduce/Enlarg e key. The magnification ratio will be shown on copy quantity/magnification display an d the “%” symbol will light.
Section 4 BASIC OPERATION 4-6 The Low Power mode automatically puts the copier into a state of sleep if no operation has been perfo rmed on the copier for a pre-set period of time (between 1 minu te and 240 minu tes). “---” will be shown on the copy quan tity/magnification display, but eve rything else on the operatio n panel will go out.
Section 4 BASIC OPERATION 4-7 The Off mode automatically turns mo st of the power to the copier off if no operation has be en performed on the copier for a pre-set period of time (between 15 and 240 minutes). “-” will be shown on the copy quantity /magnificatio n display, but ever ything else on the operation panel will go out.

5-1 Section 5 COPY FUNCTIONS With this mo de, the images f rom either 2 or 4 originals c an be reduced and then comb ined onto a single copy. In addition, the borderline of each original can al so be marked with a solid or dotted line. NOTES • It is possible for you to change the default setting for the borderlin e.

NOTE A single comb ination of copy m odes and other f unctions displayed on the operation p anel can be registered as a program using this function.
6-1 Section 6 COPY DEFAULT SETTINGS The state that the copier ente rs at the end of warm-up or whe n the Reset/Power key is pressed is called the “initial mode”. The mode s, functions and other settings that are automatically pre-set for us e in the initial mode are called “default settings”.

Section 7 OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT 7-3 Setting originals on the platen When copying from an original which cann ot be set in the Document Proc essor (books, magazin es, etc.), lift open the Document P rocessor and set the or iginal directly on the platen. 1 Lift open the Docume nt Processor.
Section 7 OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT 7-4 Paper Feeder An extra drawer can be added belo w th e drawer th at is included with this copier. The type, sizes and amount of pa per that ca n be loaded in the Paper Feeder is the same as with the included drawer.
8-1 Section 8 TROUBLESHOOTING When any of the following indications appears on the copy qu antity/magnification d isplay, perform the correspondin g procedure.

Section 8 TROUBLESHOOTING 8-3 If a paper jam occurs, copying will stop. In this case, an in dication about the jam will ap pear on the operation panel. Leave the powe r switch ON ( | ) and refer to “ Removal pro cedures ” on page 8-4 to remo ve the jammed paper.

Section 8 TROUBLESHOOTING 8-10 Black or white vertical bands appear on the copies. Is the charger cleaner in its home position (marked “CLEANER HOME POSITION”)? Remove the Process Unit and return the charger cleaner to its home position. 9-4 If you are using the op tional Document Processor, is the slit g lass dirty? Clean the slit glass.
9-1 Section 9 MAINTENANCE AND OPERATION INFORMATION Lift open the origina l cover and w i pe the gray portion, as sh own in the illustration, with a soft cloth dampened with alcohol or mild detergent. IMPORTANT! Never use thinner or othe r organic solvents to clean the original cover.
