2 P r epa ring to T ake Pictur es Be f or e y ou Star t Before you sta rt tak ing pictures, you need to inst all t he bat teries or conne ct a Kodak- speci fied AC ada pte r for power , and insert a KODAK Pi ct ure Card (camera memory card) into the camera.
1 3 Loading B a tteries Y our camera uses four AA batteries. For your conveni ence, alk aline batterie s are prov ided so you c an start u sin g you r ca mera immedi ately .
4 Chec king B atteries So that you are never caught with dead batteries your came ra indicates the power level of t he bat teries. A b attery status symbol ap pears, on t he St atus Display when you turn on the camera. For information on gui deli nes for batt ery usage, see page 135.
1 5 Using an A C Adapte r When you are tak ing pictures in doors or when th e came ra is conne cted to a c omputer , you may want to use a Kodak -specifi ed AC adap ter to help conserve ba ttery pow er . It is importa nt to use only a Kodak -speci fi ed AC ada pte r with your c a mera.
6 Inser ting a Ca mer a Mem or y Car d Y our camera comes wi th a K ODAK Pictur e Ca rd (camera memory card), whi ch is used to store pictures you take with the camera. The camera memory card, also referred t o as a Comp act Flash card , i s remova ble an d re usable f or easy storag e and transfer of your pictures.
1 7 Removing a Camer a Memor y Car d CA UTI ON: D o no t ins ert or ejec t a camera memory car d when the camera memory card light, loc at ed abov e the car d door , is blinki ng. Thi s may damag e your pictures or camera. Use only certified camera memory car d s that carry the C omp a ct F la s h l og o .
8 Setting t he Clock on Y o ur Camer a Y our camera has a built -i n cloc k that main tains t he dat e and time in a 24-hou r format. Th e camera cloc k needs to be set if you pla n to use t he Date Stamp feat ure, w hich i mprints the d ate o n yo ur p icture.
1 9 Adjusting the L CD Brightness You can adjust the br ightness o f the colo r LCD to sui t your pa rtic ular n eeds. 1 Set the Mode dial to Camera Setup. Y ou ca n se t the Mode di al to any se tting you want as long as there is an image in th e LCD screen to adjust the brightness level.

2 11 2 Ta k i n g P i c t u r e s Y our camera makes taki ng pict ures fun. Just set the camera to Capt ure and you are on your w ay to creating great pictures. Everything you need is right at your fingert ips. With the camera you can: Zoom in on yo ur su bje c t.
12 P r eviewing a Pictur e Bef or e it is T aken T o see what a picture looks like bef ore you take it, preview the image on the LCD on the b ack of your camera. The l ive imag e that a ppears is very hel pful fo r framing your subject , especia lly when using the Cl ose-Up, Digi tal Zoo m, and Borde r feat ures.
2 13 The image in the LCD appears in color unless you h ave turned on an effect, such as black an d w hite or se pia ton e, in w hi ch case the eff ect i s ap plied to the d isplayed image. See page 32 for detai ls. Exposu re Compe nsation —ic on appears in the LCD and Status Display if you adjusted the camera exposure.
14 P r essi n g the Shutter Bu tton T aking pict ures is a snap with your camera. The SH UTT ER butt on on your camera locks in the auto focus and takes the pict ure. 1 Se t th e Mode dial t o Capt ure. 2 Slid e t he PO WER s witch to the r igh t t o turn on the camera.

16 Zooming in Ev en Closer If you need to get closer to your subje ct, use the Digital Zoom fea ture. Wit h digit al zoom, t he center of your pict ure is magnified so your pi ctures appear even closer . 1 Press the D O-IT butt on to turn on Pre view if it i s not a lread y act ivated.

2 19 Setting the Fl ash When tak ing pictures at night, indoors, or outdoors in heavy shadows, your pictures need flash. For everyday p icture-taki ng, use the Auto set ting. However , there are times when chan ging the f lash o ption ca n improve you r p ictures.
20 3 Press the FL ASH butt on to scrol l though the f l ash opt io ns. The Flash sett ing icon cha nges in the Stat us D isplay . Aut o (No Icon )— fires the fl ash automatic ally when needed . The camera dete rmines when t here is n ot enough li ght.
2 21 Photogr aphing Distant Su bjects If you want to create po stcard -like pictures o f scenic vi ews, such as a sunset or mount ain ran ge, use t he Infinity Focu s feat ure. Wh en In finity Focu s is sel ected, the camera automat ical ly turns off the flash and auto foc us so you get sharp, clear pict ures.
22 Photogr aphing Close-Ups If you want to take pict ures of objects up close, such as flowers or artwork, use the Close-Up feature. When sel ected, the camera automatically sets the focus di stance to 0.8 to 1.6 f t (0.25 to 0. 5 m) an d sets the fl ash to ensure detail and clarity .
2 23 P utting Y ourself in the Pictur e Ther e might be time s when yo u want everyone , inclu ding yo urself, t o be in the picture. For these o ccasions, use the Self-T imer feature to create a 10 -second dela y between t he time you press the SHUTTE R but ton and the time the pi ctur e is t ake n.
24 Adding the D ate to Y ou r Pictur es Y ou may want to keep tra ck of when a pictur e was taken, perhaps to record a child’ s first picture or for a n insurance cl aim. Whatever the reason, your camera has the ab ility to reco rd the da te and time direct ly on you r p icture using the Date Stamp feature.
2 25 7 Press the DO-IT button. The main Menu screen reapp ears. The next ti me you tak e a picture th e date or date an d ti me is recorded i n th e lower right-han d corner of the picture. 27 3 3 Customizing Y our Pictur es Chapt ers 1 and 2 explain ed the basics for taking great digital pictures. In this c hapter , you will learn about some of the custom f eatures av ailabl e on your camera.
28 Adjusting the Camer a Expo sur e If your pictu res seem too dark or to o li ght, ad just the amount of light al lowed into the camera so that your pic tures are properly exposed. These adju stments in ligh ting are cal le d Exposure Compensati on. 1 Set t he Mod e d ial to Ca pture.
3 29 If your pict ures a re too d ark, increase (+) the exposure numb er . If your pictures are too light , decrease (-) the exp osure number . Y ou can ad just the e xposure nu mbers in +2.0 to -2.0 i n 0 .5 i n crem ents. An increase of 1. 0 doub les th e amount of light allowed into the camera.

34 Adjusting the Pictur e Quality I f you i ntend to make larg e print s, you c an cap ture more de tail in th e pic t ure using the Best setting. However , with this setting more st orage room is used o n the camera memory card.

36 Adjusting the Pictur e Resolution If you want t o send pi ctu res through e- mail or us e them online, use the St an dard resoluti on setting. With this setti ng, only th e informati on neede d for viewing on a computer or prin ting small prints is captured.
3 37 Hig h — use this set ting when you are going to print your pictures. Pi cture size is 1760 x 1168 pi xel s. Stand ard— use this se tting w h en you are going to e-mail or use t he pic tures on line. Pic ture size is 896 x 592 pixel s.
38 Selecting a White B a lance f or Indoor Pictur es If you use your camera indoors w here flash i s prohib ited, your pic ture s may take on a gree n tint if cap tu red under f luorescent tub e li ght ing, or a reddi sh- orange tint if captu red under t ungst en househol d light in g.
3 39 Auto ( No I c on) —auto matical ly adjusts the white balance. Da yl ig ht —balances f or natural dayl ig h t lig ht i ng. Fluorescen t —corrects for the green cast of fluore scent light ing. Tu n g s t e n —corrects f or the o range cas t of tun gste n li ght bulb s .
40 Choosing a Metering System Y ou can control the way l ight affects your pictures using the metering systems available on your camera. If you want a nice even exposur e throughou t the picture, use the Multi-Patt ern setting. This setting is great for everyday picture s.

44 Sha rpeni ng an d S of te nin g a Pic tur e If you plan to edit your pictures using image editi ng software, the Sharp ness feature can make some ed iting pro cesses ea sier . By selecting th e Sharp set tin g, the edges aroun d the picture are en hance d, making it easier to cut or crop th e image .

46 Locking in an Ex posur e Setting If you take a series of pictures th at requ ire a consiste nt l ook or a const ant exposure setting, u se t he E xposur e Loc k feature. Th is feature is great for taki ng a series of pi ctures, li ke a mount ain ran ge, an d creating a mural wi th t he prin ts .
