Introduction Square ONE Splitter 1 Introduction Thank you for purchasing a Klark T eknik Square ONE Sp litter. Y our Square ONE Splitter forms an integr al part of the Square ONE range, which w as con.
Introduction 2 Square ONE Splitter All audio connections are on balanced XL Rs (wired pi n 2 hot ) featuring gold pl ated connectors. The mic inputs and transformer balanced outputs are mounte d on the front panel for easy access, and the two electronically bal anced outputs are on the rear panel along with the duplicate set of inputs.
Introduction Square ONE Splitter 3 Features The Square ONE S plitter has eight chan nels, each with: • T wo mic preamps, based on those used in t h e acclaime d Midas XL8 Live Performance System 1 ; one drives the two electro nically balanced outputs and t he other drives the tr ansformer isolated output.
Introduction 4 Square ONE Splitter How to use the Square ONE Splitter This section s hows you how to get the mo st out of your Square ONE Splitter. Using the ma in inputs T o maximise the sonic benefits of active splitting, the Square ONE Splitter should be located close to the mic sources and connecte d to them as directly as is practical.
Introduction Square ONE Splitter 5 Using the parallel inputs T ypically , the mic signals - from different stage lo cations - are fed to the spli tting systems usin g multi-channe l stage boxes and cables.
Getting started 6 Square ONE Splitter Getting started Observing the guid elines in the “IMPOR TAN T SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS” and “PRECAUTIONS” sections towards the front of the manual, carry out the following to get your Square ONE Splitter unit fully o per atio nal.
Getting started Square ONE Splitter 7 Connecting the power cable Making sure that the mains power at the power outlet is off, connect the mains cable supplied with your Square ONE Splitter to th e mains power outlet and th en to the mains sock et at the rear of your unit.
Getting started 8 Square ONE Splitter Connecting to unbalanced equipment Important: We recommend that you only connect balanced devices to your Square ONE Splitter. However, if you do have to connect unbalance d devices, we recommen d that you use the Klark Teknik DN100 DI box to balance the signal first.
Front panel Square ONE Splitter 9 Front panel The front panel of the Square ON E Splitter is divided into th ree main sections, as follows: 1 FIXED GAIN ISOLATED OUTPUT C / PARALLEL INPUT: Eight -chan.
Front panel 10 Square ONE Splitter ACTIVE SPLITTER section All of the switches i n this section are of the two-posit ion latching pushbutton type. Each switch , unless otherwise stated, has an adjacent LED for on/off indication, where illu minated LED = switch is on, and extinguished LED = swit ch is off .
Front panel Square ONE Splitter 11 Phones, power and media split section 1 LEVEL control knob (dB): Adjustment of the headphones signal in the range 4 (off ) to +10dB. 2 Headphone jack: Standard TRS-type 1/4” jack for connecting headphones, enab ling you to monitor the solo function .
Rear panel 12 Square ONE Splitter Rear panel The rear panel provides the power and primary I/O connec tions for the Square ONE Splitt er. Additionally , the media split and ground lift s witches are adjacent to the channel 8 connectors.
Rear panel Square ONE Splitter 13 Media split and ground lift switches The output lift and media split sw itches are deliberately recessed to prevent them being inadvertently switched on or off . Each switch has an LED abov e for on/off indication, where illuminated LED = switch i s on, and extinguis hed LED = switch is off .
Operation 14 Square ONE Splitter Operation Basic operation Caution: Never apply phantom power to any unbalanced input source. Before powering the unit, always check the +48V stat us of any phantom powered equipment conne cted to a ny of the 16 outp ut XLR s on t he re ar pan el.
Operation Square ONE Splitter 15 Media split mode T o switch th e unit to media split mode, press th e recessed MEDIA SPLIT sw it ch on th e r ea r pa ne l; it s y el lo w LED and also the one on the fron t panel will illuminate to show that the swi tch is on.
Applications 16 Square ONE Splitter Applications The followin g examples illustrate just a few of the many possible uses of the Square ONE Splitter i n a live situation. Example 1 - FOH and MON split, and broadcast out In a live broadcast situation, the Sq uare ONE Sp litter may be used to split the stage mic/line signals at source.
Applications Square ONE Splitter 17 Example 2 - FOH and MON split, and recorder In this simple liv e situation the st age mic/li ne feeds are split to serv e the FOH live sound con sole, a monitor console and an on-site recorder .
Applications 18 Square ONE Splitter Example 3 - Pre-mixed broad cast output In this live broadcast application the Square ONE Spli tter provide s isolated feed s from the group outputs of the FOH live sound console.

More about splitte rs Square ONE Splitter 23 More about splitters This section is intended to pro vide some us eful background in formation on mic s plitters. Introduction In its very basic form, a splitter accepts mi c/line signals and splits each signal for di stribution to a number of different processing de vices.
More about splitters 24 Square ONE Splitter Passive parallel splitter The passive parallel spli tter has, basically , all of the ‘spl it’ points wired in par allel, offerin g no ground isolation or any gain stage whatsoever .
More about splitte rs Square ONE Splitter 25 Isolated splitter An isolated splitter t ypically uses a 1:1:1:1 r atio tran sformer to achiev e the audio isolation. The mic input signal is connected to the pr imary winding of the tran sformer , with all of the split points deriv ed from the secondary windings.
More about splitters 26 Square ONE Splitter Active splitter An active splitter uses activ e elec tronic circuitry to address the proble ms inherent in passive (par allel and transformer isolated) splitter system s.
Balanced a udio Square ONE Splitter 27 Balanced audio Balancing refers to the type of inpu t or outp ut signal connections in an audio s ystem. These connect ions are specifically designe d to reject exte rnal noise, for example, from mains wi ring, and internal interference from adjacent signal cables.
