8 INSTALLING USB DRIVER (FOR WINDOWS 98SE ONLY) Follow these instructions to load software that enables a comp uter to recognize the Digital Audio Player. 1. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of your PC . 2. Turn off the Digital Audio Player and connect it to your PC with the USB connector.
9 GETTING STARTE D CHARGING THE BUILT-IN BATTE RY Charge the rechargeable battery before using it for the first time or when it is depleted. Charging the battery us ing a USB connection Turn on the PC and connect the player to a USB port on your PC using a USB cable.
10 GETTING STARTED CONNECTING TO PC You can transfer MP3 and WMA format music files from the PC to your Digital Audio Player through USB po rt. USB2.0 (480Mbps speed is not supported.) Connecting Digital Audio Player to PC 1. Make sure that the player is turned off.
11 GETTING STARTE D Transferring music files from PC to Digita l Audio Player 1. Open the player’s folder (remov able disk or device) from My Computer or Explorer. 2. Copy and paste or drag and drop the mu sic files from the PC to the player’s folder.

13 GETTING STARTE D HOW TO USE THE NECK STRAP HEADPHONES A neck strap with a pair of built in headphones, called "Neck Strap Headphones", has been included for listeni ng to your digital audio player.
14 GETTING STARTED 4. Once you are wearing the Neck Strap Head phones around your neck, bring each earphone from the behind your neck and place in the each ear respectively. You can also adjust the position of the silver slider according to your preference.

16 GETTING STARTED DISPLAY OVERVIEW ∗ This is not displayed when NORMAL mode is selected. ∗∗ If both the top and the bottom lines of the file information are long, the top line is scrolled first, and then the bottom line is scrolled.
17 USING THE MAIN MENU There are number of modes you can operate using MAIN MEN U. Types of modes BASIC OPERATIONS MUSIC mode Select to play music. (See page 18.) ABOUT mode Select to display about the player. (See page 35.) NAVIGATE mode Select to easily search for the desired music.
18 BASIC OPERATIONS PLAYING MUSIC You can play the music files. Before playing music, adjust the volume level with the volume +/- buttons. To play mus ic 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select MUSIC mode from Main Menu, and then press 3 8 button to enter that mode.
19 BASIC OPERATIONS NAVIGATE Use to display the hierarchical tree structur e of music folders and files ( ). From this tree structure, you can easily locate a desir ed music file and play it back.
20 BASIC OPERATIONS Music file playing orde r in Music mode: From the hierarchical tree structur e, you can easily unde rstand the playing order of music files when you normally play them in Music mode. You will see that the music files are played b ack in the order from the higher hierarchy to the lower one.
21 BASIC OPERATIONS RECORDING MUSIC FROM EXTERNAL AUDIO EQUIPMENT IN LINE-IN MODE You can record the music played back on exte rnal audio equipment. Make sure that the audio cable is con nected between the LINE IN terminal of this audio player and the external audio e quipment.
22 BASIC OPERATIONS • The "LINE" folder is automatically generated, the recorded music files are stored in it as MP3 files. The "LINE" folder can be displayed using NAVIGATE mode. (See page 19.) • If "Low Battery" appears when you press and ho ld REC button, you need to charge the battery.
23 BASIC OPERATIONS DELETIN G FILES To delete files 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select DELETE mode from Main Menu, and then press 3 8 button to enter that mode. 2. Press ¢ / 4 button to select "MUSIC FILES".
24 SET MENU ITEMS In SET mode, you can set the following SET MENU items: EQ SET (Equalization Set), PLAYMODE, SLEEP TIMER, A.POWER OFF (Auto Power OFF), BAC KLIGHT, CONTRAST, R ECORD SET and LANGU AGE. To set each item, see the relevant later page . EQUALIZER You can select from one of 6 different preset sound modes or one customized sound mode.
25 ADVANCED FEATURES To select sound mod e 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select SET mode from Main Menu, and then press 3 8 button to enter that mode. 2. Press ¢ / 4 button to select "EQ SET". 3. Press 3 8 button.
26 ADVANCED FEATURES PLAYMODE You can select various play modes. Types of p layback mode s Mode Display Explanation NORMAL Normal play REPEAT ONE Repeats one track.
27 ADVANCED FEATURES To select pl ay mode 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select SET mode from Main Menu, and then press 3 8 button to enter that mode. 2. Press ¢ / 4 button to select "PLAYMODE". 3. Press 3 8 button.
28 ADVANCED FEATURES SLEEP TIMER Use the sleep timer to turn off the player after a certain period of time during playback. You can set the period of time to 15, 30, 45, 60 minutes, or OFF (default). Th e sleep timer work s temporarily. Once it has worked, it is canceled.
29 ADVANCED FEATURES AUTO POWER OFF Use the auto power off to turn off the player after a certain per iod of time when no operation is made. You can set the period of time to 2, 5, or 10 minutes, or OFF (default).
30 ADVANCED FEATURES BACKLIGHT Use to adjust the backlighting extension time (0 to Max) after finishing the last operation. (Default: 5 seconds) When "Max" is set, the backlighting remains on for approx.
31 ADVANCED FEATURES CONTRAST Use to adjust the contrast of the display. To set contrast 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select SET mode from Main Menu, and then press 3 8 button to enter that mode. 2. Press ¢ / 4 button to select "CONTRAST".
32 ADVANCED FEATURES RECORD SET For external equipment input (LINE), set bit rate, A.TRK, etc. during recording. To set record ing 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select SET mode from Main menu , and then press 3 8 button to enter that mode.
33 ADVANCED FEATURES To exit SET mode : Press MENU button (or select "EXIT" and press 3 8 button) in the SET MENU. Bit Rate: Indicates information content of the compressed data per second. As the bit rate is higher, the audio quality becomes higher, but the data amount increases.
34 ADVANCED FEATURES LANGUAGE Use to set the language to specify the character code for file names and ID3 tags (default: English). For the file names and ID3 tags, you can select one of 27 languages. As for the menu, you can select one of three languages: English, Simplified Ch inese or Traditional Chinese.
35 ADVANCED FEATURES ABOUT Use to display firmware version and status of the player. To display: After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select ABOUT mode from Main Menu, and then press 3 8 button to enter that mode. To exit ABOUT mode: Press MENU button.
36 ADVANCED FEATURES RESETTING THE UNIT Use to reset all the settings you have made to d efault. To reset the unit 1. After turning on the player, press MENU button and ¢ / 4 button to select RESET mode from Main Menu, and then p ress 3 8 button to enter that mode.
37 ADVANCED FEATURES LOCKING BUTTONS (HOLD) Slide the HOLD switch to the right to lock all controls. When the hold function is activated, the " " appears in the upper right of the display.
38 ADVANCED FEATURES DISPOSING OF THE DIGITAL AUDIO PLAYER Remove the built-in battery before disp osing of the XA-F series player. DO NOT disassemble the player except when you dispose of it (doing so may cause a failure or breakage). Do no t remove the built-in battery before making sure it has been completely used up.
39 ADVANCED FEATURES 3. Remove a screw on the side of the LINE IN jack with a scr ewdriver. 4. Remove the top half of the casing by lifting it up. 5. Remove the three screws shown in the illustration below. 6. Hold the part shown in the illustrati on below and turn the circuit board over.
40 ADVANCED FEATURES 7. Lift the part shown below with your fingernail and turn the built-in battery over. 8. Cut the red and black wires from the battery with scissors.
41 TROUBLESHOOTING Problem Solution The player does not function. • Make sure the HOLD switch is off. • Battery may be drained. Charge the battery. There is no sound or a lot of noise. • Make sure the headphone plug is correctly connected to the player.

19 BASIC OPERATIONS LISTENING TO FM BROADCASTS You can listen to a preset (registered) FM st ation after presetting FM stations. The following two operation modes are available: Scan mode: Used to tune in to a station. A.Scan, M.Scan and S.Scan modes are available for tuning and then presetting.
