6 Getting Started Unpacking After unpacking, check to be sure that you ha ve all the follo wing items. The number in parentheses indicates the quantity of each piece supplied. • FM antenna (1) • AM (MW) loop antenna (1) • Remote control (1) • Batteries (2) If any item is missing, consult your dealer immediately .
7 Connecting Other Equipment To connect an audio equipment Y ou can connect audio equipment—used only as a playbac k de vice. • DO NO T connect any equipment while the power is on. • DO NO T plug in any equipment until all connections are complete.
8 Common Operations Setting the Clock Before operating the unit any further , f irst set the unit’ s clock. When you plug in the po wer cord, “0:00” starts flashing on the display . Y ou can set the clock when the unit is either turned on or in standby mode.
9 Selecting the Source To select the source, press CD 6 , T APE 2 3 , FM/AM, or AU X . • When you select CD as the source, playback starts automatically . To operate the CD play er , see pages 10 to 13. To operate the tape deck, see page 14. To operate the tuner (FM or AM (MW)), see pages 15 to 17.
10 Playing Back the Entire Disc—Normal Play 1 Press ) OPEN on top of the unit. The disc cov er opens. •Y ou can insert a disc while listening to another source. 2 Place a disc corr ectly with its label side up. 3 Close the disc cov er gently . 4 Press CD 6 .
11 Ta g T o remove the disc, press ) OPEN on the unit, then take out the disc by holding it at the edges while pressing the unit’ s pi vot lightl y . • If the disc cannot be read corr ectly (because it is scratched, f or e xample) or an unreadable CD-R or CD-R W is inserted Playback will not start.
12 Repeating T racks—Repeat Play Y ou can hav e all the tracks, the program or indi vidual track currently playing, repeat as many times as you lik e.
13 Displaying the Remaining Time during Playback Y ou can display the remaining time of the current track/disc and the elapsed time of the current track/disc during playing.
14 If no cassette is inserted when y ou press T APE ¤ ‹ “NO T APE” appears on the display . To stop playing, press 7 . To fast-wind to the left or to the right, press ¢ or 4 (or UP ¢ or DO WN 4 on the unit). The tape direction indicator ( 3 or 2 ) starts flashing rapidly on the display .
15 T uning in to a Station 1 Pr ess FM/AM to select either “FM” or “AM (MW). ” The unit automatically turns on and tunes in to the previously recei v ed station—either FM or AM (MW). • Each time you press the button, the band alter nates between FM and AM (MW).

17 Searching for Programs by PTY Codes (PTY Search) One of the advanta ges of RDS is that you can locate a particular kind of program by specifying the PTY codes. •F or details on the PTY codes, see “ Description of the PTY codes ” on the right column.
18 Listening to the External Equipment Y ou can listen to the external equipment such as MD recorder , cassette deck, or other auxiliary . •F irst, make sure that the external equipment is properly connected to the unit. (See page 7.) 1 Set the volume le vel to the minimum position.
19 3 Start playing the source—FM, AM (MW), or auxiliary equipment connected to A UX jack. •W hen the source is FM or AM (MW), tune in to the station you want to record. • When recording from discs, see “Recording Discs— Disc Synchronized Recording” on page 20.
20 To stop recording f or a moment, press REC. Both the CD playback and tape recording are paused. T o resume r ecording, press T APE ¤ ‹ . To stop recording , press 7 . The recording stops and the CD playback is paused. To record on both sides—Reverse Mode On the r emote control ONL Y : Press REV .
21 Using the T imers There are four timers a vailable—Daily T imer , Recording T imer , Snooze T imer, and Sleep T imer . • Before using these timers, make sure the b uilt-in clock is set correctly (see page 8). Using Daily Timer and Recor ding Timer Y ou can set the timer whether the unit is on or of f.
22 3 F or the Recording Timer ONL Y : Set the off-time y ou want the unit to tur n off. (1) Press UP or DO WN to set the hour , then press SET . (2) Press UP or DO WN to set the minute, then press SET . If you want to change the time setting, press CANCEL.
23 Using Sleep T imer W ith Sleep T imer, you can fall aslee p to your fav orite music or radio program. •Y ou can set Sleep T imer only when the unit is turned on. •Y ou can also turn of f the unit automatically by using Auto Standby . (See page 8.
24 Maintenance To get the best performance of the unit, keep your discs, tapes and mechanism clean. General notes In general, you will hav e the best performance by keeping your discs, tapes and the mechanism clean. • Store discs and tapes in their cases, and keep them in cabinets or on shelves.
25 If you are ha ving a problem with your unit, check this list for a possible solution before calling for service. If you cannot solve the pr oblem from the hints giv en here, or the unit has been physically damaged, call a qualif ied person, such as your dealer for service.
