CHAPTER 1 ERX System Overview 1-4 Figure 1-2 ERX-1400 series rear view ERX-700 Series In the ERX document ation, the term ERX -700 ser ies refers to bo t h the ERX -705 system and the ERX -700 system. The terms ERX -705 system and ERX -700 system ref er to the specif ic models.
The ERX System ERX Edge Routers 1-5 The ERX -705 chassis is the same as t he ERX -700 chassis (see Figu re 1-3 and Figure 1-4 ). The chassis contains seven slot s to accommodate modules. Installation procedures and operating procedures are identical f or both systems.
CHAPTER 1 ERX System Overview 1-6 W her e the ERX System Fits In Figure 1-5 and Figure 1-6 illustrate t he po sition of t he system as an edge router in an end-t o-end Internet netw ork. Communications wit h the system ca n take place ov er a variety of media.
ERX System Modules ERX Edge Routers 1-7 ERX System Modules The system supports an SRP module and a selection of line modules. Y ou can use any line module for access or uplink .
CHAPTER 1 ERX System Overview 1-8 SRP Module The SRP module (see Figure 1-8 ) is a two-board assembly; both boards connect to the syst em’s midplane and to each other: • The fabric board is a switch f abr ic server that queues pack ets f or the line modules.
ERX System Modules ERX Edge Routers 1-9 Figure 1-8 SRP module SRP I/O Module A single cor responding input/output module called the SRP I/O module interfaces with one or tw o SRP modules through the system’s midplane. The same SRP I/O w orks with all models of t he SRP module.
CHAPTER 1 ERX System Overview 1-10 Line Modules Line modules process da ta from dif feren t types of netw ork connections. F or information about the availa ble line modules and which SRP modules support specif ic line modules, see Appendix B, Module Specif ications .
Network Management Tools ERX Edge Routers 1-11 I/O Modules Most line modules have a corresponding input/output (I/O) module t hat provides t he physical interconnectio n to the netw ork. Inser t each I/O module in the back of the system, di rec tly behind its corresponding line module.
CHAPTER 1 ERX System Overview 1-12 SRP I/O module locat ed in the rear of t he chassis. If the primar y SRP fails, the redundant SRP module a ssumes control without rebooting or initializing itself. (As a consequence, if y ou upgrade sof tware, y ou must copy the software to the redundant SRP and reboo t it.
Redundancy Features ERX Edge Routers 1-13 If there is not enoug h space on t he pr imar y NVS card to create t he synchronization reser ve f ile, t he synchronize command fails, and y ou see a warning message on the console.
