3 Overview IOGEAR’s Symphon y multi-function KVM Switch represents the new wav e in KVM technology . The GCS1774 allows you to control f our computers using a single V GA monitor , USB ke yboard and mouse. In addition, it has a built-in USB 2.0 hub, Ethernet 10/100 switch, and Audio sharing capabilities.

Front View 2. Ports LEDs The P or ts LEDs are b uilt into the por t selection switches. The upper ones are the KVM por t LEDs; the lower ones are the USB LEDs.
• Lights BRIGHT ORANGE to indicate that the computer attached to its corresponding port is the one that has the KVM focus (Selected) • Flashes to indicate that the computer attached to its corresponding port is being accessed under Auto Scan mode.

Before you Begin 1. Make sure that power to all the devices you will be connecting up has been turned off. Y ou must unplug the po wer cords of any computers that have the Keyboard Power On function. Other- wise, the switch will receive power from the computer.

INTRODUCTION Hot Plugging The GCS1772/GCS1774 supports USB hot plugging – components can be removed and added back into the installation by unplugging their cables from the USB hub ports without the need to shut the unit down.
Port Switching There are two ways to access the computers in your KVM setup: · Manual switching – pressing the push-buttons on the unit’ s front panel · Hotkey switching – entering commands from the keyboard Manual Switching 1.
Hotkey Operation The GCS1772/GCS1774 provides an extensive, easy- to-use, hotkey function that makes it convenient to control and configure your KVM installation from the keyboard. PC keyboard Scroll Lock NO TE: The tab le below assumes the use of a PC- compatible ke yboard with the Scroll Lock ke y .
Port Switching Note: The n stands f or the computer’ s Port ID number (1, 2, 3, or 4). Replace the n with the appropr iate P or t ID when entering hotkey combinations.
17 Hotkey Operation Auto Scanning Note: • While Auto Scan is active, ordinary keyboard and mouse functions are suspended – only Auto Scan mode compliant keystrokes and mouse clicks can be entered. Y ou must e xit Auto Scan mode to regain normal console control.
19 18 Hotkey Operation Invoking Hotkey Mode For all Hotkey operations, you must use the number keypad on the right side of your keyboard. T o In voke Hotkey Mode: (PC-Compatible keyboard) 1. Press and hold the Num Lock key PC keyboard Num Lock Minus 2.
19 T o inv oke Hotkey Mode (MA C keyboar ds): 1. Press and hold the Clear key 2. Press and release the Minus key 3. Release the Clear key within one half second after releasing Minus key; otherwise the KVM will not go into Hotkey mode.
20 Hotkey Operation Note: • If using the [Num Lock], [-] combination is not optimal, you may reprogram the KVM to use an alternate key combination (see next section) • When Hotkey mode is active, the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock LEDs flash in succession to indicate that Hotkey mode is in eff ect.
21 Change Hotkey Mode Invocation Keys In case the default Hotkey Mode invocation keys ( Num Lock and Minus [-]) are not optimal in your setup, you may change them to Ctrl and F12 , respectively . T o s witch to an alternate Hotkey Mode invocation, do the following: 1.
22 Hotkey Operation Set Keyboard Operating Platform The GCS1772/GCS1774 default port configuration is for a PC Compatible keyboard operating platform. If you have a MAC attached to a port, you can change a port ’ s ke yboard operating platf o r m configuration as follows: 1.
23 Hotkey Operation USB Reset If the USB loses focus and needs to be reset, do the following: 1. Invoke Hotkey Mode 2. Press and release F5 function key Hotkey Beeper Control The beep sound the KVM makes when switching can be T oggled ON and OFF by doing the f ollowing: 1.
24 Hotkey Operation Restore Default Settings T o reset the GCS1772/GCS1774 to its factory default settings, do the following: 1. Invoke Hotkey Mode 2. Press [ R ] [ Enter ] Hotkey Default Settings.
25 Hotkey Operation MAC Keyboard Emulation The PC compatible (101/104 key) keyboard can emulate the functions of the Mac keyboard. The emulation mappings are listed in the table belo w .
26 Hotkey Operation Sun Keyboard Emulation The PC compatible (101/104 key) keyboard can emulate the functions of the Sun k eyboard. The emulation mappings are listed in the tab le below .
Ethernet Switch 27 Ethernet switch This section of the manual explains the capabilities of the built-in switch and where it fits in your Network. Essentially , the built-in switch allo ws you to connect the computers in your KVM setup to your existing Ethernet network.
Ethernet Switch 28 As you can see from the picture, your Cable/DSL line connects to your router’ s WAN port; network cable from any of the router’s LAN ports connect to any of the KVM’ s Ether net por ts; and network cable from KVM’ s Ether net por t connects to the Ether net card on your computer .
29 The Windows-based Firmware Upgrade Utility (FWUpgrade.exe) provides a smooth, automated process for upgrading the KVM s witch’ s fir mware. T o r un the fir mware, y ou will need to use a windows based PC with an available serial port. The Utility comes as part of a Firmware Upgrade Package that is specific for each device.
30 Shut down the computers on your MiniView™ installation and make sure you have set the KVM in firmware upgrade mode as instructed under section Hotkey operation → → → → → Firmware upgrade mode Make sure the power is plugged into the KVM.
31 T o upgrade y our fir mware: Run the downloaded Firmware Upgrade Package file - either by double-clicking the file icon, or by opening a command line and entering the full path to it. The Firm ware Upgr ade Utility W elcome screen appears: Read and Agree to the License Agreement (enable the I Agree radio button).
3. Click Ne xt to continue. The Firmware Upgrade Utility main screen appears: The Utility inspects your installation. All the devices capable of being upgraded by the package are listed in the Device List panel.
4. As you select a device in the list, its descrip- tion appears in the Device Description panel. 33 The Firmware Upgrade Utility.
After you have made your device selection(s), Click Next to perform the upgrade. If you enabled Chec k Fir mware V ersion , the Utility compares the device’ s fir mware le vel with that of the upgrade files.
As the Upgrade proceeds status messages appear in the Status Messages panel, and the progress toward completion is shown on the Progress bar . After the upgrade has completed, a screen appears to inform you that the procedure was successful: Click Finish to close the Firmware Upgrade Utility .
If the upgrade failed to complete successfully a dialog box appears asking if y ou want to retr y . Click Y es to retry . If you clic k No , the Upgrade Failed screen appears: Clic k Cancel to close the Firmware Upgrade Utility . See the next section, Firm ware Upgr ade Recovery , for how to proceed.
