7 Stability and Balance W ARNING AL W A YS wear your seat positioning strap. T o assure stability and proper operation of your wheel- chair , you must at all times maintain proper balance. Y our wheelchair has been designed to remain upright and stable during normal daily activities as long as you do not move beyond the center of gravity .

10 WARNING Ther e are a number of sour ces of relatively intense electr omagnetic fields in the everyday environ- ment. Some of these sour ces are obvious and easy to avoid. Others ar e not apparent and exposur e is unavoidable. However, we believe that by following the warnings listed below, your risk to EMI will be minimized.

13 Don’t tip or tilt batteries. Don’t use ordinary tap water . Don’t overfill cells. Don’t use uneven levels of distilled water in cells. Don’t tap on clamps or terminals with tools. Don’t mismatch your battery and chargers. Use a carrying strap to remove, move or install a battery .
14 W ARNING Most batteries are not sold with instructions. How- ever, warnings are frequently noted on the cell caps. Read them carefully. 1. Remove the battery boxes from the wheelchair . Re- fer to INST ALLING/REMOVING BA TTER Y BOXES in PROCEDURE 8 of this manual.
15 MOTOR BRUSH INSPECTION (FIGURE 4) W ARNING Invacare recommends that the following pr oce- dures be per formed by a qualified service tech- nician. There are two (2) contact brushes on t he motors located under the brush caps on the motor housing. If these caps are hard to remove they are either overtighened or the motor has become very hot.

31 8. Use Loctite 242 on the hex bolts and torque into the back canes to 75-inch pounds. 9. While holding the hex bolt, reinstall the locknut and torque to 75-inch pounds. 10 . Repeat STEP 9 for the other hex bolt and locknut. 1 1 . Securely tighten back upholstery to the new top half of the back cane with the phillips screw and washer .

Use the recharging plug located on either the side of the wheelchair frame or on the fr ont of the joystick.

39 B A T T E R I E S PROCEDURE 8 BA TTERIES 1. Examine battery clamps and terminals for corrosion. 2. V erify plastic caps are in place over battery cell holes. 3. Clean the terminals and inside the battery clamps by using a battery cleaning tool, wire brush, or me- dium grade sand paper .

41 7. Secure the joystick mounting bracket to the two (2) half clamps with the remaining two (2) hex screws. 8. Slide tube through bracket to the desired position. 9. Slide the adjustment lock over the end of the tube and secure the adjustment lock to the tube by turning the lever on the adjustment lock.
