9 Introduction —Continued Supported Discs The DPC-8.5 supports the following discs. • The DPC-8.5 will play only Region 1 NTSC D VD-V ideo discs. • Some audio CDs feature copy protection that doesn’ t conform to the official CD standard. Since these are nonstandard discs, they may not play properly on the DPC-8.
10 Introduction —Continued Disc Content Organization ■ D VD-Video D VD-V ideo discs typically contain one or more titles, which may be subdivided into chapters.
11 Introduction —Continued Handling Discs •N ev er touch the underside of a disc. Always hold discs by the edge, as shown. •N ev er attach adhesi ve tape or sticky labels to discs. Cleaning Discs •F or best results, keep your discs clean. Fingerprints and dust can affect the sound or picture quality and should be remov ed as follows.
12 Introduction —Continued ■ D VD-R W (D VD rewritable): A type of D VD disc that can be recorded ov er and over again. Can be used for D VD-V ideo or D VD-Audio. ■ D VD-Video: The format for storing MPEG2 video on D VD, with interactiv e menus, multiple soundtracks, subtitles, camera angles, and so on.
13 Bef ore Using the DPC-8.5 Notes: • The supplied batteries should last for about six months, although this will vary with usage. • If the remote controller doesn’t w ork reliably , try replacing both batteries. • Don’t mix ne w and old batteries, or different types of batteries.

U Clear button (33, 36, 46) This button is used to cancel functions and to clear entered numbers.
20 Connecting the DPC-8.5 This chapter explains ho w to connect the DPC-8.5 to your other A V components. • Read the manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’v e completed all audio and video connections.
21 Connecting the DPC-8.5 —Continued This section explains ho w to connect the DPC-8.5 to your TV or projector . The TV handles the audio and video. If your TV has a Dolby Pro Logic decoder built-in, you’ ll be able to enjoy D VDs and videos that bear the Dolby Surround logo.
22 Connecting the DPC-8.5 —Continued Notes • Before making any connections, turn of f the DPC-8.5 and your TV and disconnect their po wer cords from the wall outlets. • Refer to the connection information supplied with your TV . • Connect the DPC-8.
23 Connecting the DPC-8.5 —Continued This section shows ho w to connect the DPC-8.5 to an A V receiv er for Dolby Digital, DTS, D VD-Audio, and SA CD playback. Digital Audio Connection (Dolby Digital & DTS) To fully enjoy the Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks av ailable on most D VD-V ideo discs, you need to connect one of the DPC-8.
24 Connecting the DPC-8.5 —Continued This section explains ho w to connect the DPC-8.5 to a stereo amp or receiv er for sound quality better than that possible with most TV’ s built-in speakers. This is great for listening to your CDs and MP3s, and D VDs and VCDs will sound better too.
25 Connecting the DPC-8.5 —Continued Y ou can use the follo wing multiroom kits to control the DPC-8.5 when it’ s out of range of the remote controller: • Onkyo Multi-Room System (IR Remote Controller Extension System) • Multiroom A V distribution and control systems such as those made by Niles and Xantech.
26 Connecting the DPC-8.5 —Continued Notes: • Before connecting the power cord, complete all of the necessary audio and video connections. • Do not use a power cord other than the one supplied with the DPC-8.5, which is designed exclusi vely for use with the DPC-8.
27 T urning On the DPC-8.5 & Fir st Time Setup Before connecting the power cord, connect all of your AV components (see pages 20 to 24). Don’t for get to turn on your TV or projector and select the video input to which the DPC-8.
28 T urning On the DPC-8.5 & First Time Setup —Continued Notes: •Y ou can change the language of the onscreen setup menus, and your preferred languages for D VD menus, foreign language soundtracks, and subtitles on the Language page of the onscreen setup menus (see page 62).
29 Basic Pla ybac k This section explains ho w to load discs. Notes: •Y ou can load up to six discs. Y ou don’t ha ve to load all six discs ev ery time. • When the disc tray is closed, all of the disc indicators appear until the DPC-8.5 has checked each bay for the presence of a disc.
30 Basic Playbac k —Continued This section explains ho w to load and remov e discs with- out stopping playback. The section explains ho w to select loaded discs. Loading Discs During Playbac k 1 Press the Open/Close [ ] button. The disc tray opens. The disc that’ s currently playing remains inside the DPC-8.
31 Basic Playbac k —Continued Notes: • The type of disc currently selected is shown on the dis- play: D VD, D VD-A UDIO, SACD, VCD, or CD (see page 15). •Y ou can select discs while the DPC-8.5 is stopped or during playback. •Y ou can use the [Disc Skip] button to skip the current disc and start the next disc.
32 Basic Playbac k —Continued D VD-V ideo discs usually have an onscreen menu from which you can select titles, chapters, and other options, including foreign language soundtracks, subtitles, and audio formats (e.g., Dolby Digital or DTS). D VD-Audio discs sometimes hav e menus as well.
33 Basic Playbac k —Continued This section explains ho w to select chapters and titles by number . Notes: • During playback you can select chapters directly by using the number buttons. • If the current D VD-V ideo disc contains only one title, you won’ t be able to select titles.
34 Basic Playbac k —Continued W ith the Disc Navigator you can play and display MP3 and JPEG files. Using the Disc Navigator 1 Load and select a disc contain- ing MP3 or JPEG files. See pages 29 and 30. The Disc Navigator appears, as sho wn. The number of the currently selected disc is shown on the disc icon.
35 Basic Playbac k —Continued Notes: • If the selected JPEG file’ s resolution is 640 x 480 pix- els, a thumbnail-size previe w will be shown. If the res- olution exceeds 640 x 480, a pre view will only be shown if the file contains thumbnail image data.
36 Basic Playbac k —Continued This section explains ho w to select tracks by number . Notes: •Y ou can select tracks directly at any time by using the number buttons (i.e., without pressing the [Search] button). • If PBC is on (see page 64), and the current VCD sup- ports it, you may be able to select tracks from a menu (see page 32).

Notes: • There are five fast forw ard and rev erse speeds for D VD-V ideo and D VD-Audio, and three for SA CD, VCD, CD, and MP3. • No sound is output during fast forward or f ast rev erse of a D VD-V ideo disc, VCD, or D VD-VR disc.
38 Basic Playbac k —Continued W ith slow-motion playback you can w atch a scene slowly either forw ard or backward. Notes: • There are four slow motion speeds for D VD-V ideo/ D VD-VR and three for VCD. • Backward slo w-motion playback does not work with VCDs and D VD-VR discs.
39 Basic Playbac k —Continued The DPC-8.5 supports JPEG CDs, so you can view your photos on TV either indi vidually or as a slideshow . Using JPEG CDs 1 Load and select a JPEG CD . Depending on the type of JPEG disc, either the first nine pictures appear in thumbnail-size or the Disc Navigator appears.
40 Basic Playbac k —Continued Notes: • If the folder containing the JPEG images also contains some MP3 tracks, the DPC-8.5 will play those tracks while showing the slidesho w . • If the selected JPEG file’ s resolution is 640 x 480 pix- els or less, a thumbnail-size previe w is shown.
41 Ad v anced Pla ybac k W ith the T ime Search function you can locate specific points. Notes: • The T ime Search function works only within the cur- rently playing title (D VD-V ideo and D VD-VR) or track (D VD-Audio, SA CD, VCD, CD, MP3).
42 Adv anced Playbac k —Continued Notes: • Repeat playback may not work with some D VDs. • If you press the [Repeat] button while the Memory function is on (see page 44), the playlist will play repeatedly . •T o use the Repeat function with a VCD that supports PBC, you must first turn off PBC (see page 64).

47 Adv anced Playbac k —Continued Some D VD-V ideo discs feature soundtracks in sev eral languages and audio formats (e.g., Dolby Digital or DTS). Music D VD-V ideo discs and D VD-Audio discs sometimes feature soundtracks in sev eral audio formats, such as PCM, Dolby Digital, or DTS.
48 Adv anced Playbac k —Continued W ith the Last Memory function you can resume play- back from where you left off e ven if another disc has been selected or the disc has been remov ed. Last Mem- ory also remembers the soundtrack and subtitle settings you were using.

50 Adv anced Playbac k —Continued ■ VCD & CD ■ MP3 Notes: •F or D VD-V ideo and DVD-Audio discs, when the soundtrack, subtitle, or camera angle is changed, the setting is displayed onscreen for 10 seconds. T o cancel this display , press the [Display] button twice.
51 Adv anced Playbac k —Continued Y ou can turn of f all of the internal video circuitry , elimi- nating the possibility of interference, for a pure-audio experience when playing audio-only discs. Notes: • When the video circuitry is turned off, none of the DPC-8.
52 Configuring the DPC-8.5 This chapter explains the v arious settings on the onscreen setup menus. Settings are arranged into six groups: Pictur e, A udio, Langu age, Display , Operation, and Initial Setup . The follo wing table lists all of the settings, with a brief descrip- tion and page number where you can find full details.

58 Configuring the DPC-8.5 —Continued Analog A udio Out W ith this setting you can configure the FR ONT , SURR 1/SURR 2, CENTER, and SUBWOOFER A UDIO OUTPUTs for use with a 2-channel amp or a multichannel amp. ■ 2 Channel Choose this option if you’ re connecting just the FR ONT A UDIO OUTPUTs to a stereo amp.

63 Configuring the DPC-8.5 —Continued On-Screen Display W ith this setting you can turn on or off onscreen mes- sages, such as “Play , ” “Stop, ” and “Resume. ” Off: Onscreen messages off. On (default): Onscreen messages on. On-Screen Display Color W ith this setting you can set the color and theme for the Disc Navigator .
64 Configuring the DPC-8.5 —Continued Notes: • When entering the security code, you can use the [Clear] button to delete numbers. • This setting can be changed only when playback is stopped.
