Basics 29 Checking notifications Notification icons on the s tatus bar r eport the arrival of ne w messages, calendar e vents, alarms set and ongoing settings such as when call forw ar ding is on or the curr ent call status.
30 Basics A djusting the v olume Adjus ting the ringer volume changes the v olume lev el of the phone ring tone, wher eas adjusting the media v olume changes the volume le vel of sound notifications, music or video playback. T he ringer volume and media v olume can be separat ely adjust ed.

Phone calls Making calls Ther e are se ver al conv enient methods to make a call fr om your phone . Most SIM car ds ar e pr eset with a PIN (personal identification number) that is pr o vided by y our mobile opera tor . When pr ompted, enter the pr eset PIN, then tap Enter .
42 Phone calls Calling a speed dial number From the Home scr een, tap Phone . On the phone k eypad, pr ess and hold the number that is associat ed with the contact you want t o call. The number 1 on the phone k eypad is gener ally reserv ed for your v oicemail.
Phone calls 43 Making an emer gency call Y ou can make emer gency calls fr om your phone e ven if y ou don’t hav e a SIM car d installed or y our SIM car d has been block ed. From the Home scr een, tap Phone . Dial the international emer gency number for y our locale (for e xample, 000), and then tap Call .
44 Phone calls Rec eiving calls When y ou receiv e a phone call from a c ontact, the Incoming call screen appears and displa ys the caller ID icon, name , and phone number of the calling party .
Phone calls 45 Rejecting an inc oming call Depending if the display is on or off , you need to: If the display is on, tap Decline t o reject and send the call to y our voic e mail. If the display is off , the display will turn on showing the L ock scr een.
46 Phone calls Using in-call options When a call is in pr ogress, use the butt ons onscr een to mut e or unmute the micr ophone or to turn on or off the speak erphone. Y ou can also pres s MENU to open the call options t o let y ou add a call, place the call on hold, mut e the micr ophone, and mor e.
Phone calls 4 7 Setting up a conf er ence call Mak e a call to the first c onferenc e call participant. When connect ed, press MENU , tap A dd call , and then dial the number of the second participant. The firs t participant is put on hold when y ou dial the second participant.
48 Phone calls Using call hist ory When y ou miss a call, the missed call icon ( ) appears in the title bar . Use the Call hist ory tab in the People application to check who the caller w as or view all y our dialed numbers and rec eived calls. From the Home scr een, tap Phone .
Phone calls 49 Checking a missed call Y ou will see the missed call icon in the status bar when y ou miss a call. From the Home scr een, tap Phone . T ap at the bottom-right c orner of the screen. In the call hist ory list, missed calls ar e indicated b y the missed call ic on ( ).
50 Phone calls Call servic es Y our phone can directly link to the mobile phone netw ork, and enable you t o access and change the settings of various phone servic es for your phone . Call services ma y include call forw ar ding, call waiting, v oicemail, and mor e.
Phone calls 51 T urning Airplane mode on or off In many c ountries, y ou are r equir ed b y law t o turn off the phone while on board an air cr aft. A wa y to turn off the phone function is to s witch y our phone to Airplane mode .
People About People In People , y ou can easily manage your communica tions with contacts via phone , messaging, and email. Y ou can also view updat es on their F acebook and Flickr ac counts.
People 53 People scr een The People scr een gives y ou easy acc ess to all y our contacts, as well as e ven f ast er acc ess to the people and groups of people y ou contact most oft en.
54 People 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 Create a ne w contact. 2 T ap to edit y our My contact car d. 3 SIM card contact 4 This ic on appears when the contact: Has sent y ou a new t ext or email message , or tried to call y ou but you missed the call. People 55 Importing contacts fr om your SIM car d Y ou can copy all y our SIM contacts to y our phone. Y ou can import them as Phone contacts, Google contacts, or Ex change Activ eSync contacts, if y ou hav e set up the rele vant acc ounts. From the Home scr een, tap > People .
56 People Breaking the c ontact information link betw een contacts From the Home scr een, tap > People . On the All tab, tap the name of the contact (not the ic on or photo ) whose contact information link y ou want to br eak. On the upper right corner of the scr een, tap .
People 5 7 Deleting contacts From the Home scr een, tap > People . On the All tab, pr ess MENU, and then tap Delete . Select the contacts y ou want to delet e, and then tap Delete . When pr ompted, tap OK . Sending contact inf ormation as a vCar d via MMS From the Home scr een, tap > People .
58 People Contact gr oups On the Groups tab , y ou can assign contacts to gr oups so you can easily send an SMS, MMS, or email message to a whole gr oup. Y ou can also sync groups on y our phone with the groups in y our Google acc ount, accessible via y our computer’s w eb bro wser .
People 59 Sending an SMS/MMS message or email t o a gr oup From the Home scr een, tap > People . On the Groups tab , tap the gr oup y ou want to send an SMS/MMS message or email t o. Go to the Gr oup action tab, and then do one of the following: T ap Send gr oup message to send an SMS/MMS message t o the group.
60 People Contact inf ormation and con v ersations When y ou tap a contact on the People scr een, the contact details scr een opens, showing y ou the information s tor ed for that contact, e xchanged mes sages and phone calls with that contact, F acebook notifications, and mor e.
People 61 People widget Put the group of people y ou contact most right on the Home scr een of your phone b y adding them as the People widget. Using the People widget, y ou can instantly place a call, send a message, or vie w details of a fav orite contact with a single tap .

Using the landscape onscr een k e yboard When entering t ext, y ou can choose to use the landscape orientation of the onscr een ke yboard.
Ke yboard 63 Enabling multiple k e yboard languages If there ar e multiple ke yboard languages a v ailable on y our phone, you can choose which languages to enable in the onscr een ke yboar d so that y ou can switch t o these languages to enter t e xt.
64 Ke yboard Entering w ords with pr edictive t ext The onscr een ke yboard has pr edictiv e text t o help you type quickly and accur ately . Pr edictiv e te xt input is enabled by def ault, and w or d suggestions ar e display ed as y ou type.
Ke yboard 65 Ent ering t e xt b y speaking No time to type ? T ry speaking the w or ds to ent er it in most te xt fields that let you use the onscr een ke yboard. Simply pr ess and hold the Language k ey . When y our phone cues you t o “Speak no w”, tell y our phone what y ou want to type .
66 Ke yboard A djusting t ouch input settings Open the T ouch Input settings b y pr essing HOME > MENU , and then tapping Settings > Language & ke yboard > T ouch Input. K e yboar d types T ap to select the k eyboar d lay out to use . Y ou can choose from Q WERTY , Phone K e ypad, or Compact Q WERTY .
Mes sages About Messages Messages lets y ou compose and send te xt (SMS) and multimedia messages (MMS) to other mobile phones. T o open y our message inbox, tap > Messages fr om the Home screen.
68 Messages 3. Fill in one or more r ecipients. Y ou can: Enter phone numbers dir ectly in the T o field. If you’r e sending the message to se ver al phone numbers, separ ate the phone numbers with a c omma. As y ou enter inf ormation, any ma tching phone numbers fr om your c ontacts list ar e display ed.
Messages 69 5. T ap and then choose the type of attachment. Picture . Select Camer a to tak e a photo and attach it, or Gallery t o attach a photo fr om y our st or age car d. Video . Select Camc order to captur e a video and attach it, or Videos to a ttach a video from y our stor age card.
70 Messages Ne w message notifications Depending on y our notification settings, the phone will pla y a ring tone , vibr ate , or display the message briefly in the status bar when y ou rec eive a ne w text or multimedia mes sage.
Messages 71 W AP push messages W AP push messages c ontain a web link. Oft en, the link will be to download a file tha t y ou hav e reques ted, f or e xample a ring t one. When y ou receiv e a W AP push message, a notification ic on is display ed in the status bar .
72 Messages Managing message c onv ersations T e xt and multimedia messages that are sent t o and receiv ed from a c ontact ( or a number) are gr ouped into con versations or mes sage thr eads in the All messages scr een.
Messages 73 Pr otecting a mes sage fr om deletion Y ou can lock a message so that it will not be deleted e ven if y ou delete the other messages in the con versation. From the Home scr een, tap > Messages . On the All messages scr een, tap a message thread.
7 4 Messages Setting t e xt and multimedia message options From the Home scr een, tap > Messages . On the All messages scr een, press MENU and then tap Settings to set the t e xt or multimedia message options.
Messages 7 5 SMS settings Deliv ery r eports Select this option to r eceiv e a r eport on the deliv ery status of y our message. Service Cent er Display s the message service cent er number used. T ap to change the number . It is rec ommended that you do not change the number her e for it may cause pr oblems in rec eiving and sending messages.
A c c ounts and s ync S ynchr onizing with online acc ounts Y our phone can sync information and r eceive upda tes fr om your Google™ and Micr osoft® Ex change Activ eSync® ac counts as well as popular online servic es such as Facebook®, T witt er™, and Flickr™.
Ac counts and s ync 77 Synchr onizing with a Microsoft Ex change A ctiv eSync acc ount Y ou can only add one Microsoft Ex change Activ eSync acc ount on y our phone. Y ou can sync with Microsoft Ex change Serv er 2003 Servic e Pack 2 (SP2) or lat er .
78 A ccounts and s ync Remo ving an account Y ou can remo ve an acc ount to delete it and all informa tion associat ed with it fr om y our phone, for e xample messages, c ontacts, or settings. Remo ving an account does not delet e information fr om the online service itself .
Ac counts and s ync 79 S ynchr onizing with y our comput er Y ou hav e y our new v acation photos on y our phone while y our business calendar is on y our comput er .

Social 87 T weeting on y our phone Peep is a T witter™ client that lets y ou enjo y “tw eeting’’ on y our phone. Send out tweets, r ead and rec eive tw eets from people, sear ch for new T witter users to f ollo w , all from y our phone. 1. From the Home scr een, tap > Peep .
88 Social Sear ching for T witter users to f ollow From the Home scr een, tap > Peep . While on the Peep scr een, press the SEARCH butt on. T ap the te xt field with the wor ds “Search T witter ”, enter the sear ch criteria, and then tap .

90 Social Using Friend Str eam Str eamline y our social network acc ounts thr ough Friend Str eam. Update y our status simultaneously , view s tatus updat es, and look thr ough photo updat es from y our Facebook, T witt er , and other social network ac counts using Friend Str eam.

92 Social Chatting in Google T alk Google T alk is Google’ s instant messaging pr ogram. It lets y ou communicate with other people that also use Google T alk. Signing in to Google T alk If y ou signed in to y our Google Ac count when y ou first set up the phone, y ou are alr eady signed in to Google T alk.
Social 93 Swit ching betw een activ e chats Y ou can switch betw een chats if you ha ve mor e than one chat going. While on a chat scr een, press MENU , and then tap Swit ch chats .
94 Social A cc epting an invitation to bec ome a friend When a contact in vites y ou to bec ome a friend in Google T alk, you r eceiv e a notification in the Status bar and the in vitation appears in y our Friends list. From the Home scr een, tap > T alk .
Social 95 Changing Google T alk settings Setting notifications for ne w Google T alk messages Y ou can set the phone to play a sound, vibr ate, or displa y a notification icon in the status bar each time y ou r eceiv e a new ins tant message. From the Home scr een, tap > T alk .
Email Using Gmail/ Google Mail Gmail/ Google Mail is Google’s w eb-based email service. Gmail/ Google Mail is configur ed when y ou first set up y our phone. Depending on y our synchr onization settings, Gmail/ Google Mail on y our phone is automatically s ynchronized with one or mor e Gmail/ Google Mail acc ounts on the w eb.
Email 97 Swit ching to another Google A ccount If y ou hav e set up more than one Google A ccount on y our phone, y ou can swit ch between acc ounts in Gmail/ Google Mail. For mor e information on setting up Google A ccounts, see “Synchr onizing with a Google Acc ount” in the Acc ounts and sync chapter .
98 Email Replying t o or forw arding an email message 1. From the Home scr een, tap > Gmail/ Google Mail . 2. In the Inbox, tap the email mes sage or con versation. If the email message is long, swipe y our finger up the screen. 3. T ap Reply , Reply t o all , or Forwar d .
Email 99 5. If you w ant to add a pictur e attachment, pr ess MENU and then tap A ttach . Navigat e to the pictur e y ou want t o attach, and then tap the picture. 4 5 1 2 3 1 Recipient. 2 Subject. 3 Attachment. 4 Enter y our message here. 5 T ap to r emov e the attachment.
100 Email A con versation list opens, displa ying all of the conv ersations with messages that c ontain the wor ds you sear ched for . The w ords y ou searched for ar e display ed in the title bar . Y ou work with the con versations in this list jus t as y ou would with the con versations in y our Inbox or any other c onv ersation list.
Email 101 W orking with conv ersations in batches Y ou can archiv e, label, delete, or perform other actions on a ba tch of c onv ersations at onc e, in y our Inbo x or in another labeled list of con v ersations. 1. In the Inbox or other c onv ersation list, select the check bo x es for the conv ersations y ou want t o work with as a batch.
102 Email to pla y when you r eceiv e a new email mes sage, tap Silent . T o confirm your ring t one selection, tap OK . Select Vibr ate if y ou want y our phone to vibr ate when y ou receiv e a new email message. Notify once . When clear ed, you ar e notified ev ery time you r eceiv e a ne w email message.
Email 103 Mail The Mail applica tion lets y ou send and r eceiv e email from y our webmail or other ac counts, using POP3 or IMAP . It also lets y ou acc ess your Ex change Activ eSync email and other featur es on your phone . For informa tion on this, see “Ex change Activ eSync email” in this chapter .
104 Email Inbo x filter tabs Receiv ed Display s email messages as individual items. Con v ersations Display s messages as con v ersations, gr ouped accor ding to the subject line. T ap a subject in the list to sho w the email con v ersation. VIP group Display s messages from c ontacts in y our VIP group.
Email 105 Ex change Activ eSync email If y ou synchr onize y our phone with y our work Ex change Activ eSync account, y ou can read, manage, and send email in the same eas y wa y as with a POP3/IMAP account. Ho we ver , y ou can also acc ess some po werful Ex change features.
106 Email Composing and sending an email message From the Home scr een, tap > Mail . On the email acc ount Inbo x, press MENU and then tap C ompose . 3. Fill in one or more r ecipients.
