30 Phone Basics The f ollowing are some instances when y ou would use dragging: Moving or deleting a Home screen it em T ouch and hold an application icon, widget, or folder on the Home scr een. When the item magnifies dr ag your finger to any part of the screen to move the it em, or drag the item to the T rash butt on to delete it.
Phone Basics 31 Enter y our PIN If your SIM card is pr eset with a PIN (personal identification number), you will be prompted t o enter the PIN to proc eed. Enter the SIM PIN, and then touch OK . T o k now how to enable or disable the SIM PIN, see “Protecting Y our Phone” in Chapter 10.
32 Phone Basics 1.7 Home Screen The Home screen is y our star ting point for using the applications on y our phone. Y ou can customize the Home screen to displa y application icons, shortcuts, f olders, and widgets accor ding to your pref erence . Notifications (See “P hone Status and Notifications” in this chapter for details.
Phone Basics 33 Extended Home screen The Home screen e x tends beyond the scr een width to provide mor e space for adding ic ons, widgets, and more . Pr ess HOME, and then slide your finger horizontally across the scr een to go to the left or right side of the extended Home screen.
34 Phone Basics C ustomize the Home scr een T o add a Home screen item Pr ess HOME, and then touch and hold the screen. When the A dd to Home menu opens, select the item you want t o add to the Home screen: Shortcuts Add shor tcuts such as applications, a bookmarked web page , a favorit e contact, a Gmail label, or a music playlist.

36 Phone Basics T o change the screen orientation Slide open the keyboard or hold the phone sidewa ys to change the screen orientation into landscape mode . T o create a f older and add items to it Y ou can create f olders on the Home screen to hold application icons or shortcuts.
Phone Basics 37 1.8 Setting Up a G oogle Ac coun t The first time you ac cess a Google ser vice such as Google T alk™, Gmail™, or Android Market™, you will be prompted t o create a Google accoun t or sign in to your existing Google account (c ould be a G oogle Mail or Gmail account).

Phone Basics 41 Notifications panel Notification icons r epor t the ar rival of new messages, calendar ev ents, alarm set and ongoing settings such as when call forwarding is on or the current call status . Y ou can open the Notifications panel to open the message, r eminder , or event notification and know your wireless service provider name .
42 Phone Basics 1.10 Applications The Applications tab holds all installed applica tions on your phone. All icons of applications that you do wnloaded and installed from Android Market or from the web ar e also added to the Applications tab .

44 Phone Basics 1.12 A djusting the V olume Adjusting the Ringer volume changes the v olume level of the phone ring tone, wher eas adjusting the Media volume changes the volume lev el of sound notifications and music or video playback. The ringer volume and media volume can be separately adjust ed.
Phone Basics 45 When the Media volume window appears , move the slider to the left (to lower the v olume) or to the right (to increase the v olume). T ouch OK to close the window .

2.1 Mak ing Calls When you pr ess the CALL ( ) button on your phone , the Dailer application opens. Y ou can place a call from the Dialer , or from the C ontac ts , Call log , or F avorit es tab of the Contacts application. Notes • When the screen is locked , press the MENU button, and then touch Emergency call to open the emergency dialer .

The Speaker button indicator ligh ts up green and the speakerphone icon ( ) appears in the status bar when the speakerphone is on.

Pr ess MENU , and then touch End call . If you are using the pr ovided wired headset, press and hold the butt on to end the call.

62 Using Phone F eatures and Managing Contacts T o change the contact’ s default phone number The default phone number of a contact appears below the con tac t ’ s name in the contacts list. The default phone number is used when you initiate a call or send an SMS/MMS message from the con tac ts list (by touching and holding a contact).

Depending on the option you hav e selec ted, y ou may need to manually star t synchronization or it will automa tically star t synchronization when you connect the phone to the PC.

3.1 U sing the Ke yb oard When you start an application or select a field that requires text or numbers, y ou can open and use the QWERT Y keyboard to enter inf ormation. The keyboard is similar to a standard keyboar d on your computer . Open the keyboar d Hold your device sidew ays, with the contr ol buttons on the right.

Depending on your synchroniza tion settings, the Calendar on your phone sta ys in sync with your Calendar on the w eb. 5.1 Sending T ex t and Multimedia Messages Messaging lets you compose and send text (SMS) and multimedia messages (MMS) to other mobile phones. Open Messaging T o open the M essaging application, pr ess HOME, touch the Applications tab , then touch Messaging .
84 Ex changing Messages Crea te and send SMS and MMS messages Y ou can compose text (SMS) messages of up to 160 characters. If you continue t o type af ter the limit is reached , your message will be deliver ed as one, but count as more than one message .
Exchang ing M essages 85 3. Roll the TR ACKBALL do wn to selec t the text box, then start composing your message. Note As you near the 160-character limit, a counter will appear in the top right c orner of the text box to t ell you how much characters are left.
86 Ex changing Messages V ideos . Opens the Galler y application. T ouch a video on the screen to attach it to y our message. Capture video . Opens the C amcorder application. T ake a video , and then touch Select this video to attach it to your message .

94 Ex changing Messages T o add a signature to emails Y ou can add a signature to email messages tha t you send. In the I nbox, pr ess MENU and then touch Settings > Signature . Enter y our signature in the text box, and then t ouch OK . T ip Y ou can cr eate a signature c onsisting of multiple lines of text.
Exchang ing M essages 95 T o view emails Do one of the following: Pr ess HOME, then touch and hold the status bar , and then slide down your finger on the screen to open the Notifications panel. T ouch the new email to view it. While in the Inbox, touch the unread email or the con versation with the unread email to view it.
96 Ex changing Messages Reply to or f or ward emails In the message thread, scr oll down to the end of the con versation. 2. T ouch Reply , Reply to all , or F or ward . 3. Do one of the following: If you selected Reply or Reply all , enter y our reply message.

Exchang ing M essages 107 T o switch between active chats Y ou can switch between chats if you hav e more than one chat going . 1. While on a chat scr een or in the fr iends list, press MENU and then touch S witch chats . 2. On the panel that opens, t ouch the friend you want t o chat with.
108 Ex changing Messages T o block a friend Y ou can block a friend from sending you messages. When blocked, y our friend is also remov ed from your F riends list. 1. In the Friends list, loca te the friend you want to block. Note If you cannot see the friend, P ress MENU and then touch All friends .
