● Never restrict the inco ming or o utgoi ng airflow of the wor kstat ion b y blocking any vents or air intakes, as shown in the following fig ure. Setup procedures WARNING! Adding monitors Planning for additional monitors All graphics cards provided with HP Z series Workstations suppo rt two simultaneous-displ ay monitors (see Connecting and confi guring monitors on pag e 17 ). Cards that support more than two monitors are available.
NOTE: Mon itors with resoluti ons above 1920 x 1200 pixe ls at 60 Hz req uire a gr aphics card with either Dual Link DVI ( DL-DVI) or Displa yPort outpu t. To get native resolution with DVI, you must use a DL-DVI cable, not s tandard DVI-I or DVI-D c ables.

● Graphics ca rd with VG A and DL-D VI outpu t — If the workstation does n ot have a PCIe g raphics card, but has one o r more SVGA and/or DL-DVI outputs, you can connect a monitor to each output.
Using a third-party graphics configuration utility Third-party gr aphics cards may include a monitor configuration utility. Upon installa tion, this utility is integrated into Windows. You can select the utility and use it to configure multiple monitors with your workstation.

Transferring files and settings The Windows operating system off ers data migration tools that h elp you select and transfer files and data from one Window s-bas ed workstation to another. For informat ion about these tools, go to http://www.microsof t.
Backing up your information NOTE: Windows includes the User Accoun t Control feature to improve th e security of your workstation. You may be prompted by User Account Control for yo ur permission or password w hen you perform certain tasks. To co ntinue a task, select the appro priate option.
System Recovery CAUTION: This procedure will delete all us er information. To prevent los s of information, be sure to back up all user information so you can restore it after recove ry. Always use th e System R estore proced ure before you use the Syst em Recovery program.
Using HP Recovery Disc operating system discs CAUTION: Using a Windows 7 operating system DVD completely erases h ard d rive c ontents and reformats the hard drive. All f iles that you have created a nd a ny software th at you have installe d on the workstation are permanently remo ved.

Downloading Windows 8 updates Microsoft may release updates to the operating system. To help keep the workstation running optimally, HP recommends checking for the latest updates during the ini tial insta llation and periodically throughou t the life of the workstation.
● Store pers onal files in the D ocuments librar y, and ba ck it up r egularly. ● Back up templates that are stored in their associated p rograms. ● Save customized settings that ap pear in a window, toolbar, or m en u bar by taking a screen sh ot of your settings.
Creating recovery media and backups Recovery after a syst em failure i s only as good as your most re cent backup. CAUTION: Use a flash drive with a capacit y of at least 8 GB. Any informa tion on the USB flash drive will be erased before the r ecovery media is created.

1. If possible , back up a ll personal file s. 2. If possibl e, check fo r the pres en ce of the HP Recovery partitio n: from the Start screen, type This PC , and then select This PC . NOTE: If the HP Recovery partition is not listed, or you cannot che ck for its prese nce, you must recover using the recovery media that you c reated.
4. Press F11 t o select the System Reco very option. 5. Choose your keyboard layout. 6. Select Troubleshoot . 7. Select Reset . 8. Follow the on-screen instru ctions to continue. Recovery using the Windows 8 recovery USB flash drive CAUTION: Using F11 completely erases har d drive contents and refo rmats the hard d rive.
Recovery using Windows 8 restore media This recovery process requires Wi ndows 8 restore discs, which c an be ordered from the suppo rt website. The Window s 8 restore media cons ists of a Win dows 8 op erating system dis c and a Windows 8 driver disc.
6 Setting up and restoring Linux HP offers a variety of Linux solu tions for HP workstation custo mers: ● HP certifies and supports Red Hat ® Enterprise Linux (RHE L) on HP wor kstations. ● HP certifies and suppor ts SUSE Linux Enterprise Deskt op (SLED) on HP workstations.
HP Installer Kit for Linux (HPIKL) The HP Installer Kit f or Linu x helps users install certified ve rsions of RHEL or SLED on HP workstations. It is available as an operating system option on all HP workstations.
HPIKL driver disc Recent versions of Red Hat Linux typically require onl y driver updates with minor f ixes to support HP workstations. These releases can usually be supporte d with the HPIKL dr iver disc, which can be used as a post-installati on utility for the st andard Red Hat Linux i nstal l.
Setting up SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) HP offers a 64-bit SLED 11 preloa d on some Z seri es Workstation s and supports 64-bit SLED 11 on other w orkstations. Various ver sions of S LED are cer tified and s upported by SUSE on HP workstations.
Restoring SLED (preloaded systems only) To resto re SLED, y ou must us e the SLE D restore media. To c reate r estore media : 1. Click the SUSE ISO icon on the desk top to go to the /iso folder. This folder contains all ISO images used to preload your workstation.

Upgrading BIOS To find and download the latest a va ilable BIOS version, which in cludes the latest enhancements: 1. Go to http://www.hp.com/ go/workstationsupport . 2. In the left navigatio n pane under Tasks , selec t Download Drivers and Softwa re .

Be fore you call su pport, do the followi ng: ● Have the workstation readily accessible.
Locating ID labels To assist in troubleshooting, id entification labels are availab le on each workstation. ● All workstations have a serial nu mber (unique for each workstation) a nd product number. Have these numbers available wh en you contact support.

Helpful hints If you encounter a p roblem with t he workstation, monitor, or so ftware, the followin g general suggestions might help you isol ate and focus on the problem bef ore taking fu rther action. At startup ● Verify that the w orkstation is p lugged into a functional AC out let.

Cleaning the chassis ● Follow the safety precautions in the Maintenance and Se rvice Guide for your workstation before cleaning the workstation . ● To remove lig ht stains or d irt, u se plain water w ith a clean, l int- free clo th or swab .
Cleaning the mouse 1. Follow the safety precautions in the Maintenance and Se rvice Guide for your workstation before cleaning the mouse. 2. If the mouse has an on/off switch, turn it off. 3. Wipe the b ody of the mouse with a soft micro fiber cloth or cham oi s moistened with alcohol-free glass cleanin g fluid or water with mild soap solution.
