4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required The following tools are ne eded to comple te the removal and replacement procedures: ● Flat-bladed screwdrive.
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that cables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly process. Impr oper cable placement ca n damage the comp uter. Cables must b e handled with ex treme care to avoid damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensiti ve to electrostati c discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and structure determine the degree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transp orting guidelines Follow these grounding guidelines when packagin g and transporting equipment: ● To avoid hand co ntact, transport pr oducts in static-safe tube s, ba gs, or boxes . ● Protect ESD-sensitive part s and assemblies with co nductive or approved co ntainers or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equipment must include either a wrist st rap or a foot strap at a grounded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a gr ounded system. Wrist straps are flexible straps with a minimum of one megohm ±10% resistance in the ground cords.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides remova l and replacement procedures. There are as many as 78 screws, in 8 di fferent sizes, that must be re moved, replace d, or loose ned when servicing the co mputer. Make special note o f each screw size and location during removal and replacement.

Remove the hard drive: 1. Disconnect the hard drive adapter ca ble from the system board (1) and then pull up on the tab (2) to remove th e drive from the hard drive b ay. NOTE: If the rubber hard drive bracket is wedged into the hard drive bay snugly, you may need to gently pry up the hard drive using a thin nonconductive tool.

6. Remove the optical drive bracket (2) . 7. To repla ce the optical drive bezel, di sconnect it from the optical drive. Reverse this procedure to r eassemb le and install the optical drive.

3. Remove the WLAN module (4) by pulling it aw ay from the slot at an angle . CAUTION: To prevent an unresponsive system, replace the wireless module only with a wireless module authorized for use in the computer by the governmental agency that regulates wireless devices in your country or regi on.

2. Open the di splay and stand the computer on it s side. Insert a small screwdriver through the keyboard acces s hole in the bottom of the computer. (The keyb oard access hole is the same hole from which the keyboard screw was removed.) Push firmly on the bo ttom of the keyboard until it is disengaged.
4. Release the zero insertio n force (ZIF) connector (1) to which the keyboard cable is attached, a nd then disconnect th e keyboa rd cable (2) . Remove t he keyboard (3) .

2. Release the three ZIF connectors (1) to which the ZIF cables are attached. Then disconnect the power button cable (2) , the TouchPad cable (3) , the TouchPad button cable (4) , and USB bo ard cable (5) from the system board. 3. Remo ve the two Phillip s 5.

Remove the three Phillips 5.0×2.5 screws in the battery bay, the two Philli ps 5.0× 2.5 scre ws near the hard drive connector , and the nine Phillips 6.0×2.5 screws along the edges of the base enclosure. NOTE: The four sc rews along the fron t edge also serve to sec ure the speakers inside the base enclosure.

6. Lift the display panel (4) straight up t o remove it. NOTE: The security bracket is part of the righ t hinge. Reverse this procedure to in stall the display assembly.
7. To replace any of the display as sembly internal components, remove the following screw covers and screws: (1) Two screw covers on the display bezel bottom edge (2) Two Phillips 5.
9. Remove the display bezel (4) . Reverse this proc edure to install t he display bezel. 10. To replace the webcam module, lift the webcam mo dule as far from the display enclosure as the webcam mo dule cable allo ws. 11. Disconnect the webcam module cable (1) from the webcam module, and then remove the webcam mo dule (2) .
12. To replace the display hinge covers, re move the tw o Phillips 3.0×2.5 screws (1) that secure the covers to the display enclosure. 13. Remove the display hinge covers (2) . The display hinge covers are availab le using spare part number 641142-0 01.
15. Tilt the display (1) up, release the tape (2) holding the display cable to the display panel, and then disco nnect th e cable (3) . 16. Remove the display panel (4) from the display enclosure. The display panel is ava ilable using spare part number 647623-001 .
20. Lift up to remove the transceiver cable (2) . The wireless antenna transceivers and cable are available using spare part number 637185-0 01. Reverse this procedure to install t he display wireless antenna transceivers.
System board NOTE: The syste m board spare part kit includes U MA or discrete graphics subsystem memory and replacement ther mal material. Description Spare part number For use in Intel HM55 UMA compu.

3. Lift the system board (3) from the right edge and pul l it away from the base enclosure at an angle. For AMD computer models, see the following image.
When replacing the system board, be sure that the foll owing compone nts are remove d from the defective system board and installe d on the replac ement system board: ● Heat sink assembly (see Heat sink assembly on page 84 ) ● Processor (see Processor on page 88 ) Reverse this procedure to ins tall the system board.

3. Remove the RTC battery (2) . Reverse this procedure to install the RTC battery. Component re placement procedures 83.
Heat sink assembly NOTE: The heat sink assembly includes replacement th ermal material. The heat sink fan is available separately , using spare pa rt number 6394 60-001.
NOTE: Steps 1 through 5 apply only to computer models equipp ed with Intel processors. 1. Position the system board right-si de up, with the front t oward you. 2. Disconnect the fan cable from the system board (1) . 3. Follow the sequence em bossed on h eat sink to loo sen the seven Phillips 10.
9. Remove the heat sink assembly (4) by lifting straight up. Each time the heat sink assembly is removed, the thermal material must be thoroughly cleaned from the system board at locations (1) and (2) , from the heat sink assembly at locations (4) and (5) , and from the processor (3) .
The following illustration shows the locations fo r thermal material on syste ms with AMD processors. After applying fresh thermal paste to the components, reverse the abo ve procedure to instal l the heat sink assembly.
