4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required The following too ls are needed to complete the removal a nd replacement procedures: ● Flat-bla ded screw dri.
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that c ables are placed in their proper locations during the reassembly p rocess. Improp er cable placem ent can damage the co mputer. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avoid damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensit ive to electrostatic d ischarge (ESD). Circu itry design and struc ture determine the deg ree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines when packaging and transp orting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conduct ive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include either a wrist stra p or a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded syste m. Wrist straps are flexibl e straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±10% resi stance in the ground co rds.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement procedures. There are as many as 7 8 screws, in 8 different sizes, that mu st be removed, replac ed, or loosened when servicing the computer. Make specia l note of each screw size and location during remova l and replacement.

2. Disconnect the hard drive a dapter (1) . Then remove the hard drive bumpers (2) , and the Mylar cover (3) . Reverse this procedure to install the hard drive.

6. Remove the optical drive bracket (2) . 7. To replace the optical drive bezel, di sconnect it from the optical drive. Reverse this procedure to rea ssemble an d install the optical drive.

3. Remove the WLAN module (4) by pulling it away from the slot at an angle. CAUTION: To prevent an unresponsive system, repl ace the wireless module only with a wireless module authorized for u s e in the computer by the governmental agency that regulates wireless devices in your country or region.

2. Op en the display and stand the comp uter on its side. Insert a sma ll screwdriver through the keyboard access hol e in the bottom of the computer. (T he keyboard access hole is the same hole from which the keyboa rd screw was removed. ) Push firmly on the bott om of the keyboard until it is disengaged.
4. Re lease the zero insertion force (ZIF) conne ctor (1) to which the keyboard cabl e is attached, an d then disconnect the keyb oard cable (2) . Remove the keyboard (3) .

2. Re lease the three zero insertio n force (ZIF) connectors (1) to which the ZIF ca bles are attach ed. Then disconnect the po wer button cable (2) , the TouchPad cable (3) , the Tou chPad button cable (4) , and USB board cable (5) from the system board.
5. Remove the three Phi llips 5.0×2.5 screws in th e battery bay, the two Phillips 5.0×2.5 screws near the hard drive connector, and the nine Phillips 6.0×2.5 screws along the edges of the base enclosure. NOTE: The four screws along the fron t edge also serve to secure the speakers insi de the base enclosure.

6. Lift th e display panel (4) straight up to remo ve it. NOTE: Th e security bracket is part of the right hin ge. Reverse this proce dure to in stall the display assembly.
7. To replace any of the display a ssembly internal components, re move the following screw covers and screws: (1) Two Mylar screw covers on the display bezel bottom edge (2) Two Phillips 5.
10. To replace the webcam mod ule, lift the webcam mo dule as far from the display enclosure as the webcam module ca ble allows. 11. Di sconnect the web cam module cable (1) from the webcam module, and then remove the webcam module (2) . The webcam module is available usin g spare part number 637 197-001.
13. Remove the display hinge co vers (2) . The display hinge covers ar e available using spare part number 641142-0 01. Reverse this proc edure to install the display hinge covers. 14. To replace the display panel, re move four Phillips 4. 0×2.5 screws th at secure the display panel to the display enclosu r e.
16. Remove the display panel (4) from the display enclosure. The display pane l is available using spare part number 647623-001 . Reverse this pro cedure to install th e display panel. 17. To replace the display pane l brackets, remove the two Phillips PM 3.
20. Lift up to remove t h e tran sceiver cable (2) . The wireless antenn a transceivers and cable are available using spare part number 6371 85-001. Reverse this proc edure to install the d isplay wireless antenna transceivers.
System board NOTE: The system board spare part kit includes UM A or discrete graphics subsystem memory and replacement thermal material . Description Spare part number For use in Intel HM55 UMA comput.
Remove the system bo ard: 1. Disconnect the optical drive co nnector from the system board (1) . 2. Remove the Phillip s 5.0×2.0 screw (2) that secures the system board to the base enclosure. 3. Lift the system board (3) from the righ t edge and pull it aw ay from the base encl osure at an angle.
When replacing the system board, be sure that the following components are removed from the defective system board and installe d on the replacement system board: ● Heat sink assembly (see Heat sink assembly on page 75 ) ● Processor (see Processor on page 79 ) Reverse this procedure to insta ll the system board.
RTC battery Description Spare part number RTC battery (includes mo unting adhesive) 637 193-001 Before removing the RTC battery, remove the following co mponents: 1. Battery (see Battery on page 43 ) 2. Service access cover (see Service access cover on page 44 ) 3.
Heat sink assembly NOTE: The heat sink as sembly includes replacemen t th ermal material. The he at sink fan is available separately, using spare part number 639460-001.
4. Remove the heat sink assembly (3) by lifting it straight up. NOTE: Steps 6 through 10 apply only to com puter models equipped with AMD processors. 5. Position the system board right-si de up, with the front toward you. 6. Disconnect the fan cable from the system board (1) .
9. Remove the heat sink assembly (4) by lifting straight up. Each time the heat sink ass embly is removed, th e thermal material must be thoroughly cleane d from the system board at locations (1) and (2 ) , from the heat sink assembly at lo cations (4) and (5) , and from the processo r (3) .
The following illustration shows the locations for thermal material on system s with AMD processors. After applying fresh thermal paste to the components, re verse the above proc edure to install the heat sink assembly.

6 Setup Utility (BIOS) Setup Utility, or Basic In put/Output System (BIOS), controls co mmunication between all the input and output devices on the system (such as disk drives , display, keyboard, mous e, and printer).
Navigating and selectin g in Setup Utility Because Setup Utility is not Wind ows based, it does not support the TouchP ad. Navigation and selection are by keystroke.
Updating the BIOS Updated versions of the BIOS may be available on the HP Web site . Most BIOS update s on the HP Web site are package d in compressed files cal led SoftPaqs . Some download packa ges contain a file n a med Read me.txt, which contai ns information regarding installing and troubleshooting the file.
Downloading a BIOS update CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the computer or an unsuccessful installati on, download and install a BIOS update only when the computer is connected to reli able external power using the AC adapter.
7 Backup and recovery ● Restore ● Creating restore media ● Performing a system restore ● Backing up and re covering your inform ation Your computer includes t ools provided by the operating system and HP to help you safeguard your information and restore it if ever needed.
Restore In the event of hard drive failure, to restore your system to its factory image you will need a set of recovery discs or a recovery flash drive that you can create using HP Recovery Manager. HP recommends that you use this softwa re to create either a set of re covery discs or a recovery flash drive immediately afte r software setu p.
Performing a system restore HP Recovery Manager software a llows you to repair or re store the computer to its original factory state. HP Recovery Manager works from recovery di scs, a reco very flash drive, or fr om a dedicated recovery partition (se lect models only) on the hard drive.
3. Press f9 at system bootup. 4. Selec t the optical driv e or the flash drive. 5. Follow the on-screen instructions. Performing a system restore 93.
Changing the computer boot order To change the boot or der for recovery discs: 1. Restart the computer. 2. Press esc while the computer is re starting, and then press f9 for boot options. 3. Select Internal CD/DVD ROM Drive from the bo ot options wind ow.
To create a scree n shot: 1. Display the scr een you want to save. 2. Copy the screen image: To copy only the ac tive window, p ress alt + fn + prt sc . To copy the entire screen, press fn + prt sc . 3. Open a word-processing document, and then select Edit > Paste .
Using Windows system restore points A system restore point allows you to save and name a snapshot of your hard drive at a specific point in time. You can then recove r back to that po int if you want to reverse subsequent changes.
8 Power cord set requirements The wide range input fe ature of the co mputer permits it to ope rate from any line voltag e from 100 to 120 volts AC or from 220 to 240 volts AC. The 3-conductor powe r cord set included with t he computer meets the requirements for use in the country or region where the e quipment is purchased.
