Settin g power option s Using power-saving states The c omputer has two power -saving s tates that are enabled a t the f actory: Sleep and Hiberna tion. When S leep is initiated , the p ower lig hts blin k and the screen clears . Your wor k is s aved to m emory, letting you exi t Sleep f aster tha n exitin g Hiberna tion.

Inserting a smart card 1. Hold the card label-s ide up, an d gently slide th e card int o the sma rt card reader until the card i s seated . 2. F ollow the on- screen in structi ons for logging o n to th e compute r using the smart card PIN .

Connecting a 1394 d evice CAUTION: To red uce the ri sk of dam age to a 1394 p ort conn ector, us e minim al force to connect the device . ▲ To conne ct a 1394 device to the computer , connect th e 1394 cable for the de vice to the 1394 port. You will hear a sound whe n the d evice has been dete cted.
Connecting an eSATA device CAUTION: To red uce the ri sk of dam age to an eSATA port co nnector, use min imal for ce to co nnect the devic e. ▲ To conn ect an eS ATA devi ce to the compu ter, con nect the e SATA cable for the d evice to the eSATA po rt .
Using a seri al devi ce (se lect models only) Select comp uter mode ls incl ude a se rial port that connects optional devi ces su ch as a seri al modem , mouse, or pri nter. Some s erial dev ices ma y require additi onal sup port softwar e, which is usua lly includ ed with th e devic e.

6 Drives Handling driv es Drive s are fragi le comp uter compon ents that must be handled with car e. Refer to the fol lowing caution s before handling drives.
Using hard drives Improving h ard drive pe rformance Using Disk Defragmenter As yo u use the computer, files on the ha rd drive become fr agmented. Disk De fragme nter consol id ates th e frag me nted fi les a nd fold ers on the har d dr iv e so that the sys tem can run m ore effici ently.
Using HP 3D DriveGuard (selec t models only) HP 3D Drive Gu ard prot ect s the hard driv e by parki ng the dr iv e and hal tin g data re que sts u nde r eith er of th e followi ng condit ions: ● You drop the com puter. ● You move the com puter wit h the d isplay closed w hile the computer is run ning on b attery p ower.
Using HP 3D DriveGuard soft ware The HP 3D DriveG uard s oftware en ables you t o perfor m the following tas ks: ● Enable and d isable H P 3D Dri veGuard. NOTE: De pen din g on you r user pr ivil eges , you m ay be una ble to enabl e or disab le HP 3D DriveGuar d.
5. Gently press th e disc (3) do wn onto th e tray spi ndle unti l the disc snaps i nto place . 6. Close the disc tray. NOT E: After yo u insert a disc, a short p ause is nor mal. If y ou have not sele cted a media pl ayer, an AutoPl ay dialog box open s.
When the disc tray opens nor mally 1. Press the re lease bu tton (1) on th e drive bezel to r elease th e disc tray, and then gent ly pull out the tray (2) until it stops. 2. Remove the disc (3) from the tray by ge ntly pre ssin g down on the sp indle while li fti ng the oute r edges of the disc .
3. Remove the disc (3) from the tra y by gently p re ssin g down on the sp ind le whi le li fti ng the oute r edges of the disc . Hold the di sc b y the edg es and avoi d t ouc hin g the flat s urf aces. NOTE: If the tray is n ot fully ac cessible, tilt the d isc carefull y as you remove it.
Sharing optical drives Althoug h your computer may not have an integrated optical drive, yo u can ac cess s oftware a nd data, and ins tall app lications , by sh aring an optical drive con nected to another c omputer in your network.

Using pass words A pass word is a group of char acters that you cho ose to s ecure your comput er infor mation. S evera l types of passwo rds ca n be set, depending on ho w you wan t to contr ol access to your inform ation. Passw ords ca n be set in Wind ows or i n non-Wind ows Compu ter Setup that is preinst alled on the comput er.
Setting passwords in Computer Setup Password Function BIOS administrator passwor d* Protects access to Computer Se tup. DriveLock master pass word* Protects access to the internal hard drive that is protected by DriveLock. It is also used to remove DriveLock protecti on.

Using firewall software Firew alls ar e designed to preve nt unauthor ized ac cess to a system or networ k. A fi rewall can be a softwar e program you i nstall o n your com puter and /or networ k, or it can be a solut ion made up of both har dware and soft ware.

9 Computer Setup (B IOS) and Syste m Diagnostics Using Comp uter Setup Comp uter Setu p, or Ba si c Inpu t/Output Syst em (BI OS ), contr ol s commu nication bet ween all the inp ut and outp ut devic es on the system (such as di sk dri ves, displ ay, keyboa rd, mo use, and printer ).
