Preparing the HP Server tc2120 for NOS Installation Section 1. Hardware Setup Prepare your HP server following the instructions in the HP Server tc2120 Installation Sheet . It is recommended that you do not install any third party adapter unt il you verify that the HP equipment is functioning properly and you complete the NOS installation.
Section 2. Updating the Server BIOS HP recommends that you update your server BIOS with the latest system BIOS version to enjoy the most recent compatibility fixes. Insert the HP Startup CD in a Windows PC and follow the on-screen instructions. NOTE: If the Windows PC does not auto-star t the Startup menu, start it by opening startup.
Installing Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Small Business Server 2000 Prepare the Installation Please refer to the Chapter 1 "Preparing the HP Server tc2120 for the NOS Installation" for our recommendations on se rver preparation.
2. Insert your HP Startup CD in a Windows PC and follow the on-screen instructions to create the Windows 2000 SCSI driver diskette (HP disk W2K SCSI). NOTE: If the Windows PC does not auto-star t the Startup menu, start it by opening startup.htm, found at the root level of the Startup CD.
c. Press Enter to continue. d. Select the WIN2000 Promise FastTrac k100 TX2™ Controller adapter, then press Enter . 4. Press Enter to continue at the "Windows 2000 Server Setup - Welcome to Setup" Screen. 5. Press C to continue Setup at the "Setup ha s determined that your computer's startup hard disk is new…" screen.
NOTE: The network settings may need to be cust omized to your environment. Refer to Microsoft 2000 manuals should you ne ed further details on network setting s. 15. The "Installing Components Display" screen starts with a progress bar. It may take up to 20 minutes to complete this section.
— If you have access to a PC connected to the internet and equipped with a CD- RW drive, you may download the latest Service Pack from Microsoft at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/ downl oads/servicepacks/default.asp then copy the Service Pack on a CD-ROM.
8. Click Finish once the LAN driver has been loaded. 9. Exit all open windows and restart your com puter in order to properly initialize the LAN adapter. 10. After restarting Windows, configure the network settings for the L AN cards in order to connect to your network.
c. Locate the "Digital Signer:" If the driver of that device is digitally signed then it will display " MS Windows 2000 Publisher " or " Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher .” If the driver of the device is not digitally signed we recommend that you check the HP Website www.
5. Format all partitions that are not already formatted. 6. Exit the "Computer Management" tool. NOTE: There are two types of hard-drive conf iguration: Dy namic and Basic. You can select the appropriate type by right clicking on the disk drive icon.
2. Select the appropriate client type for your environment. 3. Click Format disk if needed. Check the number of disks required and label them as "Terminal Services for [..] Disk [x/y].” Click OK to proceed. 4. Follow on-screen instructions to perform the diskettes copies.
1. Right click My Network Places | Properties | Loc al Area Connection on your HP server. NOTE: If your HP server hosts several network adapters, the window will show o ne "Local Area Connection" ic on for each Network adapter present in t he system.
From one of the clients, ope n a command prompt and type: ping computername where computername is the server name you entered during Windows 2000 installation. You should get four replie s from your ne w server. If there is a link problem it must be fixed before going any further.
NOTE: The following instructions correspon d to the standard steps for ne w domain creation. You may customiz e the options proposed by W indows 2000 to match your environment. 5. Click Next at the "Domain Controller Type" to accept the default: " Domain Controller for a new Domain .
20. Configuring ac tive directory display shows again. Click Finish to close the Wizard utility. This completes the active directory installation. 21. Click " Restart Now " to reboot the system. Remove the CD-ROM if present. 22. At the login prompt, type i n the password .
Tip #1. Windows 2000 Installation Halts about Three Minutes after Starting to Boot from CD-ROM When installing Windows 2000 on any X86 syst em with more than one hard dri ve it is possible to experience the following error: Setup has encountered an error and cannot continue.
Tip #2. Configure the Parallel (LPT) Port for ECP Mode The device manager may not show this port on the list when not configured in ECP mode. HP recommends that you systematically configure the LPT port for ECP mode. Use the following procedure to change the setting: 1.
Tip #4. Windows 2000 Recovery Options In the event that the current installation of Windows 2000 fails to boot (this might happen after installing a new driver, co mponent, software, etc), Windows 200.
Recovery option #3: Recovery Console (RC) Boot The Recovery Console (RC) can be used when safe boot fails. You can enter RC: • Either by booting from Windows 2000 CD-ROM • Or by installing the RC boot on your system. It is recommended to install the RC im mediately after installing Windows 2000.
2. Open a command prompt, and type D:I386WINNT32 /CMDCONS (Where D: is the CD-ROM drive letter) 3. Follow the screen instructions to complete the RC installation. Booting RC 1. Shutdown and Restart system. 2. Select " Windows 2000, Recovery Console " from the boot menu.

10. On boot, press Crtl-F to enter the IDE RAID Configuration Utility and configure the IDE array as usual. Please refer to the Fast Track 100 Reference guide off of http://www.
4. If you are installing to the Promise FastTrak100 TX2 IDE RAID card do the following, if not skip to step 5: a. Press S to specify additional IDE adapters. b. When prompted, insert the Promise IDE RAID driver diskette you created from the tc2120 startup CD.
a. Press C to create a partition. b. At the "Create partition size" prompt, type 4096 and press Enter . c. HP recommends that you create all the partitions needed for each hard drive present on your system. Select unpartitioned space and press C again to create additional partitions.
NOTE: You may open the Manage Your Server wizard at any point in time by clicki ng Start | Programs | Administrati ve Tools | Manage Your Server . Section 3. Completi ng t he Installation Phase 1 – Install HP Supported Driver(s) During the Windows Server 2003 installation, the OS may not install the most current HP supported drivers.
Example: Installing the Embedded Compaq NC7760 Gigabit Server Adapter Driver 1. Insert one blank, formatted 3.5" diske tte into a workstation's floppy drive. 2. Insert the HP tc2120 Startup CD in your new server to create the Windows Server 2003 drivers diskette for the embedded Compaq NC7760 Gigabit Server adapter.
Section 4. Confi gure the Syst em Phase 1 – Perform Hardware Status Check In this section, you will run the Windows De vice Manager tool to identify any issues with the installed devices or resource conflicts. 1. Open Start | Control Panel | System | Hardware | Device Manager .
Phase 2 – Initialize Hard Disk Drive NOTE: There are two types of hard drive configur ations: Dynamic and Basic. You can se lect the appropriate type by right clicking on the di sk drive icon. Dynamic drives are used to create volumes, which can contain more than o ne physica l hard dr ive.
4. Click OK to continue, and then OK again to exit the "Local Area Connection Properties" window. Phase 2 – Attach Clients to Network and Test Network Link 1. Create shares: create a folder on your HP server hard drive then share it (right click Sharing ).
Phase 3 – Domain Controller Setup In order to promote your server to a domain controller, proceed with the following: 1. Click Start | Administrative Tools | Manage Your Server to open the "Manage Your Server" window. 2. Select " Add or remove a role.
14. Click Next to accept the " Database and Log Locations " default directories. 15. Click Next to accept the default " Shared System Volume .” 16. Click Next to accept the default permissions: "Permissions compatible only with Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 operating sys tems.

Recovery option #3: Recovery Console (RC) Boot The Recovery Console (RC) can be used when safe boot fails. You can enter RC: • Either by booting from Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM • Or by installing the RC boot on your system. It is recommended to install the RC immediately after installing Windows Server 2003.
Installing RC 1. Insert the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM. If CD-ROM auto-start is enabled, click exit to close the applet. 2. Open a command prompt, and type D:I386WINNT32 /CMDCONS (Where D: is the CD-ROM drive letter) 3. Follow the screen instructions to complete the RC installation.
ASR Restore mode: 1. Boot from the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM. 2. When prompted during the text mode portion of setup , press F2 to initiate Automated System Recovery. 3. Insert the diskette "Windows Automated System Recovery Disk" created from the ASR Backup.
Installing Novel NetWare 5.1 Prepare the Installation Please refer to the Chapter 1 "Preparing th e HP Server tc2120 for NOS Installation" for our recommendations on the server preparation. Then gather the following material: • HP Server tc2120 Startup CD • Novell NetWare 5.
4. Create the third diskette for Novell 5.1 patch (HP disk NW patch). Choose the correct link for your OS language version: — For an English-only version, click hp server tc2120 NetWare 5.1 (English only version) processor patch . — For multi-languages or other languages than the English version, click hp server tc2120 NetWare 5.
3. From the drive A: prompt, format and transfer DOS system files to the hard disk DOS boot partition by entering one of the following commands: — When using the NetWare DOS utility, enter: A:>FORMAT C: /X /S — When using the MSDOS utility, enter: A:>FORMAT C: /S 4.
Phase 2 – Install HP Drivers 1. The installation program then detects your hardware and attempts to match the drivers to the hardware. It displays a Driver names summary scree n. 2. Do one of the following: — If you have an IDE system, press Enter to continue and then proceed with to step 4.
4. The next Driver names summary screen displays storage and network devices. You need to manually install the HP LAN driver: a. Scroll down to chose Modify and press Enter . b. Scroll down to highlight Network boards and press Enter . c. Insert the HP disk NW LAN (created with the Startup CD) in the floppy drive.
NOTE: It is possible that during the initial reboot of the NetWare 5.1 OS, the GUI mode may not load properly. This can be resolve d by intalling NW5.1 Support Pack 3 or above. (See “Section 4. Install the Support Pack.” Section 3. Install the Support Pack 1.
12. Press F10 to accept the default installation options. NOTE: If you want to be able to uninstall the Suport Pack later, you must select the option to back up files. 13. Read NetWare warnings (recommends a voiding installation duri ng peak hours) and follow on screen instructions.

Section 2. Create th e Driver s Diskettes 1. Locate one blank, formatted 3.5" diskette. 2. Insert your HP Startup CD in a Windows PC and follow the on-screen instructions to create the HP Server tc2120 NetWare SCSI drivers (HP disk NW SCSI). NOTE: If the Windows PC does not auto-star t the Startup menu, start it by opening Startup.
5. If you accept erasing all data on your disk, select Continue . Then press any key for your system to create the partition, reboot, and format that partition. 6. Press F10 to " Accept License Agreement .” NOTE: You can boot from the NetWare SBS 6 License diskette.
NOTE: Do not remove the IDEATA driver, bec ause it is used by the CD-ROM drive. d. Insert HP driver diskette (created with the Startup CD) in the floppy drive for the appropriate controller you choose to use. IMPORTANT: If you have a 29160 and a Promise Fast Trak in the system, you must load the Promise driver first.
4. Wait while the system loads the new drivers. 5. Review the Volume SYS and Partition Properties Screen. Select Modify if any changes are necessary, and press the F10 key to save any changes. 6. Select Continue after all changes have been applied. 7.
10. Click Next to validate the NDS summary. 11. Click Next at the Licenses window to install the l icense previously detected. 12. If you wish to install other i tems or products, do so here and click Next . 13. Click Next at the Novell Certificate Server 2.
3. At the system console prompt enter the command: load cdrom 4. Wait for about 15 seconds for the CD to be automatically mounted a s a volume. After it is completely mounted the system should say "Volume name" mounted successfully . 5. Enter the command: nwconfig The NetWare Configuration Tool will open.
17. Select Edit STARTUP.NCF file and press Enter . 18. Add the full path to each driver displaye d that was copied in the c:drivers directory. (for example, DRIVER.HAM -> c:driversDRIVER.HAM) 19. Press F10 to save, then select Exit , then press Enter .
Troubleshooting Tip #1. Restarting NetWare Installation If you want to restart NetWare installation from the very beginning, use a utility such as fdisk to erase all data and partitions from your hard drive. You may then resume the installation process.
3. Install additional HP accessories. Section 1. Create th e Driver s Diskettes 1. Locate one blank, formatted 3.5" diskette. 2. Insert your HP Startup CD in a Windows PC and follow the on-screen instructions to create the HP Server tc2120 NetWare SCSI drivers and the Embedded LAN drivers.
• Phase 3 – Install HP Drivers • Phase 4 – Configure the Network PHASE 1 – Pre-Installation • If you are using a Non-bootable Installati on CD or yo u have a Promise FastTrak IDE RAID cont.
Phase 1b – (Bootable Non-Multilingual Installation CD) NOTE: If your hard drive contains data or is not new, HP recommends using a utility such as Fdisk to erase all data and partitions from your hard drive. 1. Insert Novell Netware 6.0 SBS CD-ROM and boot the system.
10. When the system comes up, press F10 to accept the license agreement. 11. Proceed to Phase 2 to co ntinue. Phase 2 – Start the Installation 1. Change the prompt from Express to Cust om, and keep the default New server option; scroll down and choose Continue.
c. The installation program displays the drivers detected: a SCSI driver and a generic ATA/IDE/ATAPI Adapter driver ( IDEATA.HAM ). Press Delet e to remove the default SCSI driver. The only remaining driver should be the IDEATA.HAM driver. NOTE: Do NOT remove the IDEATA driver because it is used by the CD-ROM Drive.
5. Wait while system loads the new drivers. 6. Review the Volume SYS and Partition Properties Screen. Select Modify if any changes are necessary, and press the F10 key to save any changes. 7. Select Continue after all changes have been applied. 8. Wait a few minutes while system fi les are copied and Netware GUI is started.

Section 3. Install Addi tional HP Accessories The HP server tc2120 Startup CD includes the drivers for the following HP accessories: • HP-Intel 10/100 LAN • HP-Intel 10/100/1000 LAN • HP IDE RAI.
Installing Red Hat Linux 9.0 Prepare the Installation Please refer to the Chapter 1 “Preparing th e HP Server tc2120 for NOS Installation” for our recommendations on server preparation. Then gather the following materials: • HP Server tc2120 Startup CD • Red Hat Linux Installation Media High Level Process Flow 1.
Phase 2 — Configure the Server Welcome to Red Hat Linux Click on Next to continue. NOTE: Using the GUI installation, you will have an on-screen descr iption of each possible selection displayed on the lef t of the screen. Language Selection Select the appropriate language.
NOTE: If you get a message that says, “The par tition table on device xyz was unreadable… click Yes as many times as this message pops up. Boot Loader Installation • GRUB is selected as the default linux bo otloader. If this is acceptable, press Next to continue.
Language Support Selection • Review the Language Support se tting and modify if necessary. Time Zone Selection • Review and modify as necessary. Account Configuration • Input a root password.
Video Configuration • Red Hat will detect your chip as an ATI Mach64 chip. However, the HP Server tc2120 ships with an ATI Rage XL AGP chipset. Modify the settings in order to correctly configure the video settings.
• Red Hat World Wide Web access: http://www.redhat.com Installing Red Hat Linux 8.0 Prepare the Installation Please refer to the Chapter 1 “Preparing th e HP Server tc2120 for NOS Installation” for our recommendations on server prepara tion. Then gather your Red Hat Linux 8.
2. At the "Keyboard Configuration" screen, select U.S. English and click Next . 3. At the "Mouse Configuration" screen, select the appropriate mouse for your system, and click Next . 4. At the Installation Type screen, choose th e type of installation to be performed.
f. Select Force to be a primary partition . g. Click OK . 6. Click New . a. Change the "File System Type" to swap . b. Make sure that only your boot device is selected under "Allowable Drives.” c. Set "Size (MB)" to the following formula: size = ( RAM in system ) x 2.
7. Click Next 1.5 Network Configuration NOTE: The installer should have detected all of your NICs at this point. If it does not, then you may need to obtain a special NIC driver that may be installe d after you have completed the Red Hat Linux installation.
3. On the "Account Configuration" scr een, type in the root password and confirmation. Click Next . It is also recommended that you create at least one additional user account. Click Add to create the additional accounts. Fill in the required information to create the account, and click OK .
Graphical Interface Configuration: In most cases, the installer will have automatically detected your video card configuration by this step. Simply click Next to continue. Monitor Configuration: If the system is connected to a switch box, th e installer most likely will not be able to auto probe your monitor type.
Section 2. Special Cases 2.1 Booting from a Promise FastTrak TX2 2.1.1 Boot initialization string: NOTE: If installing to a Promise FastTrak TX2, you may want to print out a copy of this reference page to keep alongs ide your Red hat 8.0 installation.
Installing Red Hat Linux 7.3 Prepare the Installation Please refer to the Chapter 1 "Preparing th e HP Server tc2120 for NOS Installation" for our recommendations on server preparation. Then gather the following materials: • HP Server tc2120 Startup CD • Red Hat Linux 7.
The installation program now displays a graphical interface. You can proceed through the customization of your installation. If you selected to install to a Promise FastTrak100 TX2 card, the installer will ask you for your driver diskette. The Promise FastTrak100 TX2 driver can be found on the tc2120 Startu p CD.
Choose Your Partitioning Strategy HP recommends using the default partiti oning mode: Automatically partition and REMOVE DATA (" Disk Partitioning " section). Boot Loader Installation NOTE: For users installing to a Promise FastTrak100 TX2, HP recommends selecting LI LO as the default Linux bootloader.
Language Support Selection Review the Language Support se tting and modify if necessary Time Zone Selection Review and modify as necessary Account Configuration Input a root password as well as additional user accounts.
Boot Diskette Creation NOTE: HP recommends that you create a boot diskette that will allow you to boot and manage your server should you exp erience problems in loading y our Red Hat environment.
Bios=0x80 Change: Boot=/dev/xxx To: Boot =/dev/sdX (Where /dev/sdX is the location of your Promise boot drive) 3. Change: Linear To: lba32 (Lowercase L) 4. To save, enter :wq 5. Run /sbin/lilo –v NOTE: This only works with LILO. 6. Return to the GUI interface, press Ctrl-Alt-F7.

Section 1. Perform SuSE Linux 7.3 Installation Phase 1 – Launch the Installation Installing to Promise FastTrak100 TX2 1. Turn on the server and insert the Promise Boot Diskette to start the installation. 2. At the installation screen, type " promise " and press the left Alt key.
Suggested Partitioning CAUTION: If you are installing to Promise FastTrak100 TX2 , the boot part ition and root partition must be formatted using the ext2 file system. Disk partitioning will vary depending on the type of services the server will provide.
b. Select Primary partition . c. Set the parameters for the boot partition as follows: Format (file system): ext2 Size: Start: Default End: Default Mount point: / 6. Click Next to proceed. Software Selection Default with Office is the default selection.
Confirm Installation 1. The installation program will summarize the HDD partitioning information, boot manager installation location as well as the size of software that will be installed. Review, and if this is acceptable, click Next to proceed. 2. Click Yes, install to proceed with the installation.
4. Click Finish Installation to proceed to the initial login screen. Remove the CD from the drive. You are now ready to enter into your new SuSE 7.3 Linux environment. NOTE: If installing to the Promise FastTrak100 TX2 card, the system will not boot at this point, unless you perform the kernel upd ate proc edure below.
