Control pa nel display icons Icon Purpose Shows that a wired network connection exists. Shows that a wireless network connection exists. The signal st rength is indicated by the number of curved lines. This is for infrastructure mode. For more in formation, see Set up the printer for wire less communication.
TIP: If the print er is connected to a computer, you can al so change the printer settings using HP sof tware tools available on your computer, su ch as the HP printer software, HP Util ity (Mac OS X), or the EWS. Fo r more information about t hese tools, see Printer managem ent tools.
HP Digital Solutions The printer inclu des a collection of digital solut ions that can help you simpl ify and stream line your work. Scan to Computer You can simply walk up to the printer, touch a button on the control panel, and either scan documents directly to a comput er or quickly share them with business partners as e-mail attachments.
Depending on your cou ntry/region, some of these papers might not be availab le. HP Brochure Paper HP Professional Paper These papers are glossy-coated or matte-coated on both sides for two- sided use.
Recommended papers for photo printing For the best print quali ty, HP recommends usin g HP papers tha t are specifically designed for the type of project you are printing. Depen ding on your count ry/region, some of these papers migh t not be availa ble.

Load an original in the automatic docu ment feeder (ADF) You can copy, scan, or fax a docume nt by placing it in the automa tic document feeder (ADF). CAUTION: Do not load pho tos in the ADF; this might caus e damage to your pho tos. Use only media that is sup ported by the printer.
Load media This section provides inst ructions for loading media int o the printer. 5. Lower the output tray. 6. Pull out the tray extender. Load envelop es To load envelop es Use these instructi ons to load an envelope. 1. Lift the outpu t tray. 2. Slide out the pa per width guides in the input tray as far as possible. NOTE: If you are loading large r sized envelopes, pull up the front e dge of the input tray to extend it.

Load custom-s ize media To load c ustom-siz e media Use these instructi ons to load custom-size media. CAUTION: Use only custom-siz e media that is su pported by th e printer. For more information, see M edia specifications . 1. Lift the outpu t tray.
▲ Insert the USB storage device. NOTE: If your USB device do es not fit into this port due to si ze limitat ions, or i f the connector on the device is shorter th an 11 mm (0.43 in), you will need to purchase a USB extension cab le in order to use your device wi th this port.
3. Clean the glass by u sing a soft, lint-free cloth that has been spr ayed with a mild glass cleaner. Dry the glass w ith a dry, soft, lint-free cloth . CAUTION: Use only glass cleane r to clean the scanner glass. Avo id cleaners that contai n abrasives, acetone, b enzene, and carbon tetr achloride, all of which can damage the scanner glass.

TIP: To enable the printer to automatically check for updat es, touch Settings , touch Product Updat es , touch Auto Upda te , and then touch Automatically . Turn off the printer Turn the printer of f by pressing (Po wer) button lo cated on the printer.
2P r i n t Most print settings a re automatically handled by th e software application. Change the settings manuall y only when you want to change p rint quality, print on spe cific types of paper, or use special featu res. For more information about selecting th e best print media for your document s, see Select print media.

Print on enve lopes (Windows) 1. Load envelopes print -side down in the tray. Fo r more information, see Loa d media. 2. On the File menu in your software ap plication, click Print . 3. Print photos on photo paper (Window s) 1. Load paper in the tra y. For more information, see Load media. 2. On the File menu in your software application , click Print . 3. Make sure the printer you want t o use is selected. 4. To change settings, cli ck the option that opens the printer Properties dialog box.
7. If necessary, change the ph oto and color options: a . Click the disclosure triangle beside Color Options and select the appropriate Photo Fix options: • Off: Applies no automatic adj ustments to the image. • Basic: Automatically focuses the im age; moderately adjusts image sharpness.

3 Scan You can use the printe r’s control panel to scan documen ts, photos, and other orig inals and send them to a varie ty of destinations, such as a folder on a computer. You can also scan these originals from your computer using either the HP softw are provided with the printer or TWAIN -compliant or WIA-compliant prog rams.
1. Load your original print -side down in the right -front corner of the glass or in t he ADF. For more information, see Load an original on the scanner glass or Load an original in the automatic docu ment feeder (ADF). 2. Touch Scan , and then select Computer .
NOTE: If you are unable to open Web scan in the EWS, your network administrator might have turned it off. For more information , contact your network a dministrator or the person who set up your network. For more information, see Embedded we b server.
Or Select the Save as PDF shortcut from the list, and then select Searchabl e PDF (.p df) from the File Type drop-down menu. 4. To start the scan, click Scan , and then follow the onscreen instructions. Mac OS X 1. Load your original print -side down in the right -front corner of the glass or in t he ADF.
• Make sure the text on the d ocument is clear. To successfully convert the d ocument to editable text, the ori ginal must be clear and of high quality. Th e following conditions can ca use the software to not convert t he document successfully: ◦ The text on the origi nal is faint or wrinkled.
4C o p y You can produce high-quality co lor and grayscale copies on a variety of paper types and sizes. NOTE: If you are copying a documen t when a fax arrives, the fax is stored in the printer's memory until the cop ying finishes. This can reduce the number of fax pages stored in memory.
You can use these setti ngs for single copy j obs, or you can save setting s to be used as defaults for future jobs. To change copy setti ngs for a single job 1. Touch Copy . 2. Select the copy funct ion settings you want to change. 3. Touch Start Bl ack or Start Color .
5F a x You can use the printer t o send and receiv e faxes, including color faxes. You can schedule faxes to be sent a t a later time and set up speed-dials to send faxes quickly and easily to frequent ly used numbers.
TIP: You can also send a fax manual ly from a phone or by using monito r dialing. These features all ow you to control the pace of yo ur dialing. They are also usefu l when you want to use a calling card to charge t he call and you have to respond t o tone prompt s while dialing.
Mac OS X 1. Open the document on your computer that you want to fax. 2. From the File menu in y our software ap plication , click Print . 3. Select the printer t hat has “(Fax)” in the name. 4. Select Fax Recipi ents from the pop-up men u below the Orien tation setting.
4. If the recipient answers the telephone, you can engage in a conversati on before sending your fa x. NOTE: If a fax machine answers the ca ll, you will hear fax tones from t he receiving fax machine . Proceed to the next step to transmit t he fax. 5.

To cancel a sche duled fax 1. Touch the Send Fax Later message on the display. – OR – Touch Fax , and then select Fax Options or Fax Settings . 2. Touch Cance l Scheduled Fax . Send a fax to multiple re cipients You can send a fax to mult iple recipients at once by group ing individual speed dial entries into group spe ed dial entries.
Receive a fax You can receive faxes automatically or manuall y. If you turn off the Auto Answer op tion, you must receive faxes manu ally. If you turn on the Auto Answ er option (the defa ult setting).
4. If you are currently o n the phone with the sender, inst ruct the sender to press Start on their fax machine. 5. When you hear fa x tones from a sending fax machine, do th e following: a .T o u c h Fax , and then select Start Black or Start Color .
NOTE: After the memory becomes ful l, the oldest, printed faxes are overwr itten as new faxes are received . If all the stored faxes are unprinted , the printer does not receive any fax calls until you print or del ete the faxes from memory. You might also want to delete the fa xes in memory for security or privacy purposes.
4. Touch On (Print an d Forward) to print and forward the fa x, or select On (Forward) to forward the fa x. NOTE: If the printer is not able to forward the fax to the designated fa x machine (for example, if it is not turned on), the printer prints the f ax.

Print a Junk Fax Rep ort Use the fol lowing procedure to print a list of blocked junk fax num bers. To print a Junk Fax Report 1. Touch (right arrow), and then touch Setup . 2. Touch Fax Setup , and then touch Basic Fax Setup . 3. Touch Junk Fa x Blocker .
To set up Fax to Mac (Mac OS X) 1. Open HP Utility. For more inf ormation, see HP Utility (Mac OS X) . 2. Click the Applications icon on the HP Utility toolbar.
TIP: In addition to cre ating and managing speed-dial en tries from the printer’s contro l panel, you can also use tools available on your compute r, such as the HP software included with the pri nter and the printer’s embedded web se rver (EWS). For more information, see Pri nter management tools.
1. On the printer’s cont rol panel, touch (ri ght arrow), and then touch Setup . 2. Touch Fax Setup , and th en select Speed Dial Setup . 3. Touch Group Sp eed Dial , and then touch an unused entry number. 4. Touch the speed-di al entries you want to include in t he group speed-dial entry, an d then touch OK .
• Set the fax speed • Set the fax sound volume Configure th e fax header The fax header prints your name and fax number on the top of eve ry fax you send. HP recommends that you set up the fax header by using the HP software provi ded with the printer.
monitors the line. If the print er detects fax tones, it receives the fax. If the call is a voice call, the answering machine re cords the inco ming message. To set the number of ri ngs before answering 1. Touch (right arrow), and then touch Setup . 2.
5. A message appears statin g that this setting shou ld not be changed unless you h ave multiple numb ers on the same telephone li ne. Touch Yes to continue. 6. Do one of t he following: • Touch the ring pa ttern assigned by your telephone compa ny to fax calls.
If you use one of the follow ing, setting the fax speed to a slower spee d might be required: • An Internet phone service • A PBX system • Fax over Internet Prot ocol (FoIP) • An integrated services digital network (ISDN) service If you experience prob lems sending and receiving faxe s, try using a lower Fax Speed .
NOTE: HP does not guaran tee that the printer will b e compatible with all d igital service lines or p roviders, in all digit al environments, or with all digital-to-analog converters. It is alw ays recommended that you discuss with the telephone company directly for the correct setup options based on their line services provi ded.
NOTE: Ensure that the prin theads and ink cartridges a re in good conditions and installed properl y. For more information, see Work with in k cartridges.
Print fax error repor ts You can configure the pri nter so that it automatically pr ints a report when there is an error during tra nsmission or re ception. To set the printer to print fax error reports autom atically 1. Touch (right arrow), and then touch Setup .
Print the details of the last fax transaction The Last Fax Transactio n report prints the details of the last fa x transaction to occur. Details include th e fax number, number of pages, and the fax status. To print the Last Fax T ransaction report 1.
6 Web Services The printer offers innova tive, web-enabled solutions tha t can help you quickly access the Internet, obtain documents, a nd print them fa ster and with less hassle—and all without using a compute r.
Set up Web Services To set up Web Services, complete the following step s. NOTE: Before you set up Web Services, ma ke sure you are connected to the Internet usin g either a wired (Ethernet) o r wireless connection.
Set up Web Services using the embedd ed web server You can use the printe r’s embedded web server (EWS) to set up and manage Web Services. To set up W eb Services, compl ete the foll owing steps: 1. Open the EWS. For more in formation, see Embed ded web server.
From the Home screen, touch (HP ePrint). The email address fo r the printer appears on the displ ay. TIP: To print the ema il address, touch Print . Turn off HP ePrint To turn off HP ePrint, complete the following ste ps: 1. From the Home screen, touch (HP ePrint), a nd then touch Settings .
Remove Web Services To remove Web Services, comp lete the following steps: 1. On the printer’s control panel display, touch (HP e Print), and then touch Settings .
7 Work with ink cartridges To ensure the best print q uality from the printer, you need to perform some simple maintenance pr ocedures. This section provid es guidelines for handling the ink cartridg es, instructions for re placing the ink cartridges, and aligning and cleanin g the printhead.
Check the estimated ink levels You can check the estima ted ink levels from the pri nter software or from the printer control panel. For info rmation about using these too ls, see Printer managemen t tools and Use the printer co ntrol panel.
Replace the ink cartridges NOTE: For information on recycling used ink supplies, see HP inkjet supplies recycling program. If you do not al ready have replacement ink cartridg es for the printer, see HP supplies and accessories. NOTE: At this time, some portions of the HP web site are avai lable in Engl ish only.
Make sure that yo u in sert the ink cartridge into the slot that has the same colored letter as the color you are installing. 6. Repeat steps 3 throug h 5 for each ink cartridge you a re replacing.

8 Solve a problem The informatio n in this section suggests solutions to comm on problems. If your printer i s not operating co rrectly and these suggestion s did not solve your problem, try using one of the followin g support services to obtain assistan ce.

correctly. To resolve this, unin stall the HP software compl etely, and then reinstall the HP software. For more information, see Unin stall and reinstall the HP software. Check the cable conn ections • Make sure both ends of the USB cable or Ethernet cable are secure.
NOTE: The printer can op erate with one or more deplete d cartridges. However, printing with dep leted cartridges slows the printer and affects the quality of printed documents. If the black ca rtridge is depleted, blacks are not as dark. If a color cartridge is deple ted, output is in grayscale .
Check the me dia settings • Make sure you select the correct print quality settings in the printer driver for the med ia loaded in the trays. • Make sure the page set tings in the printer driver match the pa ge size of media loaded in the tr ay.
Check the media size • Content on a pag e might be cut off if the docum ent size is larger than the m edia that you are usin g. • Make sure the media size selected in the printer driver match the size of media loaded in the tray.
NOTE: HP cannot guaran tee the quality or rel iability of non-HP sup plies. Printer service or repairs re quired as a result of using a non-HP sup ply are not covered under warranty. If you believe you purchased genuine HP ink cartridges, go to: www.hp.
Solution 3: Ch eck the pape r loaded in the inp ut tray Solution: Make sure the paper is load ed correctly and that it i s not wrinkled or too thick. • Load paper wit h the print side facing dow n. For example, if you a re loading glossy photo paper, load t he paper with the glossy side down.
Solution 5: Check the print settings Solution: Check the pri nt settings. • Check the print settings to see if the color settings are inco rrect. For example, check to see if the do cument is set to print in grayscale.
6700 6700 If defects are see n on the Print Quality Diagnost ic report, follow the steps belo w: 1. If the lines in Test Pattern 1 are not straight and connected, align the print er. For more information, see Align th e printhead. 2. If you see white line s in any of the color blocks in Test Patt ern 2, clean the printhead.

3. From the Device Servic es tab, cli ck the icon to the left of Align Printheads . 4. Follow the onscree n instructions. To align the printhead from HP Utility (Mac OS X) 1. Load Letter, A4, or Legal unused plain white paper into the m ain input tray.
Media is not coming out correctl y • Make sure the out put tray extender is fully extended; otherwise, printed p ages may fall off the printe r. • Remove excess media from the ou tput tray. There is a limit to the nu mber of sheets the tray ca n hold.

Documents are missing or faded • Check the media The media might not meet Hewlett-Packard me dia specifications (for exa mple, the media is too moist or too rough).
Copy defects are app arent • Vertical white or faded stripes The media migh t not meet Hewlett-Packard media spe cifications (for example, t he media is too moist or to o rough). For more information, see Media specifications. • Too light or dark Try adjusting th e contrast and copy-quality setti ngs.
Paper mismatch Check the setting s Verify that the loaded media size and type matches the cont rol panel settings. Solve scan problems TIP: You can visit t he HP online support websi te at www.hp.com/go/custo mercare for information and utilities that can h elp you correct many common p rinter problems.
Part of the docume nt did not scan or text is missing • Check the original ◦ Make sure that you load ed the original correctly. For more information, see Load an original on t he scanner glass or Load an orig inal in the automatic docum ent feeder (ADF ).
◦ If you are using a separate OCR (optical charact er recognition) program, the OCR program might be linked to a word-processi ng program that does not perform OCR tasks.
◦ Make sure that the re solution and color settings are correct f or the type of scan job. ◦ For best results, use the scanner glass for sca nning rather than the ADF.
• Unwanted lines Ink, glue, correction fluid, or an unwanted substanc e might be on the scanner gl ass. Try cleaning the scanner glass. Fo r more information, see Maintain th e printer.

The "Fax Connecte d to Active Telephone Wall Jack" test failed Solution: • Check the conne ction between the telephon e wall jack and the printer t o make sure the phone cord is secure. • Make sure you use the phone cord that came with the printer.

The "Dia l Tone Dete ction" te st failed Solution: • Other equipment , which uses the same phone line as the printe r, might be causing the test to fail . To find out if other equipment is cau sing a problem, disconnect everything from th e phone line, and then run the te st again.
The "Fax Line Condi tion" test failed Solution: • Make sure you connect the printer to an analog phone line or you can not send or receive faxes. To check if yo ur phone line is digital, connect a regular analog phone to the li ne and listen for a dial tone.

The printer cann ot receive faxes, but can send fax es Solution: • If you are not using a disti nctive ring service, check to make sure that the Distinctive Ring feature on the print er is set to All Rings . For more information, see Change the answer rin g pattern for distinctive ring.
◦ Disconnect the answ ering machine and then try receiving a f ax. If faxing is successful without the answering machine, t he answering machine might be causing the problem . ◦ Reconnect the a nswering machine and record yo ur outgoing message agai n.
