3 Paper basics You can load many differe nt types and sizes of p aper in the HP Phot osmart, including letter or A4 pa per, photo pap er, transparencies, and envelopes.

HP Printing Paper HP Printing Paper is a high-qua lity multifunction pape r. It produces docu ments that look and feel more substant ial than documen ts printed on sta ndard multipurpose or copy paper. It features ColorLok Te chnology for less smearing, bold er blacks, and vivid colors.

5. Select the appropriate options for your pri nt job by usi ng the features av ailable in th e Advanced , Printing Shortcuts , Features , and Color tabs. TIP: You can easily sel ect the appropri ate options for your print job by choosing one of the predefi ned print tasks on the Printing Shortcuts tab.

I connected the USB c able, but I am h aving problems u sing the produ ct with my computer Solution: You must first instal l the software th at came with the product before connecting the U SB cable. During installation, d o not plug in th e USB cable until prompted by th e onscreen instructions.

When I insert the CD-ROM into my computer’s CD-ROM drive, nothing ha ppens Solution: If the i nstallation does not run automatically, you can start it manu ally. To start the install ation from a Window s computer 1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start .

If this did not solve the issue, try the n ext solution. Solution 2: Make sure p aper is loaded co rrectly in the i nput tray Solution: Make sure the paper is load ed correctly and th at it is not w rinkled or too thick. • Load paper with the sid e you want to print on facing down.
If you are satisfi ed with the prin t quality, continue pri nting in ink-back up mode. Or, replace the mi ssing print cartridg e. Some software applications of fer custom fonts t hat have jagged edges when enlarg ed or printed . Also, i f you want to print b itmapped text, it might have jagged edges wh en enlarged or printed. If this did not so lve the issue, try th e next solution .
Print troubleshooting Use this section to so lve these printing problems: • Envelopes prin t incorrectly • The product prints meaning less characters • The pages in my documen t came out in the .
Solution 3: Tuck the flaps to a void paper jams Solution: To avoid paper j ams, tuck the flaps insid e the envelopes. Cause: The flaps might get ca ught in the ro llers. The product prints meaningless characters Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue.
Solution 1: C heck the pr inter marg ins Solution: Check the prin ter margins. Make sure the margin set tings for the docume nt do not exceed the print able area of the product. To check your marg in settings 1. Preview your print job b efore sendin g it to the prod uct.
Make sure that you rem ove all paper fr om the input t ray before l oading the envelopes. Cause: A stack of enve lopes was loaded incorrectly. A blank page came out wh ile printing Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue. Solutions are l isted in order, with the most likely solution f irst.

Solution 1: Install the product so ftware Solution: Install the product s oftware tha t came with the prod uct. If it is installed , restar t your co mpute r. To install the product software 1. Insert the product CD- ROM into your computer’s CD -ROM drive and then start the Setup program.
For more information o n setting up the product and connecting it to you r computer, see the Setup Guide t hat came with the product. Cause: The product was not properly conne cted to the computer.
Solution 2: Place the o riginal correctl y on the glass Solution: Load the orig inal print side dow n on the right fron t corner of the gl ass as shown below. Cause: The ori ginal was plac ed incorrectly on the glass. If this did not so lve the issue, try th e next solution .
Parts of the original do not a ppear or are cut off Solution: Load the origina l print side down on the ri ght front corner o f the glass as shown below. Cause: The original was placed incorrectly on the glass. Resize to Fit is no t working as expe cted Try the following sol utions to resolve th e issue.
Solution 2: Place the o riginal correctl y on the glass Solution: Load the orig inal print side dow n on the right fron t corner of the gl ass as shown below. To copy a photo, positio n the photo on the glass so that the long edge of the photo is alo ng the front edge of t he glass.
Cause: The original was placed incorrectly on the glass. Scan troubleshooting Use this section to so lve these scan prob lems: • Scanned imag e is blank • Scanned image i s incorrectl y cropped .
Cause: If you used the Text image type to scan text t hat you planned to edi t, the scanner mig ht not have re cognized colo r text. The Text image type scans at 300 x 300 dpi, in b lack and white. If you scanned an original that has graphics or a rtwork surrounding th e text, the scanner mig ht not have recognized the text.
NOTE: If you are us ing HP Photosma rt Essential, the Op tical Characte r Recognition (OCR ) software might n ot be installed on your com puter. To insta ll the OCR software, you must re-ins ert the soft ware disk and select OCR under the Custom installation option s.
Firmware revisio n mismatch Solution: Contac t HP support for service. Go to: www.hp.com/support . If prompted, choose yo ur country/region, and the n click Contact HP for information on callin g for te chnical support. Cause: The rev ision number of the product firmware did not matc h the revision number of the softw are.
Cause: The HP Ph otosmart Software w as not installed. If this did not solve the issue, try the n ext solution. Solution 2: Turn on the pro duct Solution: Turn on the product. Cause: The product was turned off. If this did not solve the issue, try the n ext solution.
File messages The following i s a list of file-rela ted error messages: • Error reading or writing the file • Unreadable file s. NN files could not be read • Photos not found • File not found .
File not found Solution: Close some appli cations and try th e task again. Cause: There w as not enough avail able memory on your com puter to creat e a print preview file . Invalid file name Solution: Make sure that you are not u sing any invalid symbols in the f ile name.
General u ser messages The following i s a list of messages related t o common user errors: • Cannot crop • Borderless printing error • Memo ry card error • Out of disk space • Card access e.
Cause: The product was in ink-backup mode with only the bla ck print cartridge installed, and a borderless prin t job was ini tiated. Memory card error Try the following sol utions to resolve th e issue. Solutions are listed in order, wi th the most likely solution first.
If this did not so lve the issue, try th e next solution . Solution 2: Push the memory c ard all the way forwa rd Solution: Remove the memory card and reinsert it in the memory card slo t until it stops. Cause: You had not fully inserted the memory card.
Card is not fully inserted Solution: Make sure you fully insert the me mory card into the appropriate sl ot on the product. If the memory ca rd is not inserted properly, the pro duct will not respo nd and the green Photo light (near the m emory card slots) w ill blink rapi dly.
Cause: The last time the product w as used, it was not turned of f properly. The product can be da maged if it is t urned off by turnin g off the swit ch on a power st rip or by using a wall switch.
Solution 1: Inc orrect t ype of pa per is loaded in the input tray Solution: If you have colored pa per loaded in the input tray when you align t he print cartridges, the ali gnment fails. Load unused plain w hite letter or A4 p aper into the input tray, and th en try the alignm ent again.
Solution 3: Check if p rint cartridges are ful ly inserted Solution: Remove and then reinse rt the print cartri dges. Verify tha t they are fully inserted and l ocked in place. Cause: The co ntacts on the pri nt cartridge were not touchi ng the contacts i n the print carriage.
Also, make sure the print cartridges are installed into the correct slots. To make sure the p rint cartridges ar e installed correctly 1. Make sure th e product is turned on . CAUTION: If the product is t urned off whe n you open the pri nt cartridge d oor to access the print ca rtridges, it will no t release the cartri dges for changing .
5. Reinsert the print cartridge by sliding it forward into t he slot on the right. Then push the print ca rtridge forward until it clic ks into the socket. 6. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the tri-color print ca rtridge on the le ft side. Cause: The indicated print cartridges were in stalled incorrectl y.
• Solution 3: Remove and reinsert the prin t cartridges • Solution 4: Conta ct HP support Solution 1: Insert the p rint cartridges Solution: One or both of the prin t cartridges is missing. Rem ove and reinsert the print cartridges and verify that they are fully inserted and lo cked in place.
7. Clean only the copp er-colored contacts. Allow the print cartridges to dry for approximatel y ten minutes. 1 Copper -color ed co ntacts 2 Ink nozzles (do not clean) 8. Hold the pr int cartridge wit h the HP logo on top, and insert the print cartridge back into the sl ot.
If this did not solve the issue, try the n ext solution. Solution 2: R emove the ta pe from the print cartridges Solution: Check each print cartridge. The ta pe might have been re moved from the copper-colored contacts, but still might cov er the ink nozzles.
3. Lightly press down on the print cartridge to release it, and the n pull it towards you out of the slot. NOTE: Do not remove both print cartridg es at th e same ti me. Remove and clean each prin t cartridge one at a time. D o not leave a print cartri dge outside the HP Photosmart for more than 30 minutes.
9. Repeat if nece ssary for the other print cart ridge. 10. Gently close the print cartridge door and pl ug the power cord into the back of the product. Cause: One or both of the print cartridg es were not installed o r were installed incorrectly. If this did not solve the issue, try the n ext solution.
Print cartridges m issing or not de tected Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue. Solutions are l isted in order, with the most likely solution f irst. If the first so lution does not solve th e problem, conti nue trying the remaining soluti ons until the issue is resolved.
4. Remove the black print cartrid ge from the slot on th e right. Do not touch t he ink nozzles or the co pper-colored co ntacts. Check for possibl e damage to the copper- colored contacts or ink nozzles. Make sure the clear pla stic tape has been re moved.
Make sure you have the following ma terials availabl e: • Dry foam rubber swa bs, lint-free cloth, or any so ft material th at will not come apart or leave fibe rs.
7. Clean only the copp er-colored contacts. Allo w the print cartri dges to dry fo r approximately t en minutes. 1 Copper-colored contacts 2 Ink nozzles (do not clean) 8. Hold the print cartridg e with the HP logo on top, and insert the print cartridge back into the slot.
If this did not so lve the issue, try th e next solution . Solution 3: Replace the pr int cartridge Solution: Replac e the indicated print cartridge. You can also remo ve the indicated print cartrid ge and print u sing ink-backup mode . NOTE: During ink-ba ckup mode, the pro duct can only pri nt jobs from the computer.
Solution 2: Contact HP s upport for service Solution: If you have comp leted all of the step s provided in the previous solutions and are still having a p roblem, contact HP support for service. Go to: www.hp. com/support . If prompted, choose your count ry/region, and then click Contact HP for technical support.
