4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required You will need the fo llowing tools to comple te the removal and replacement procedures: ● Flat-bladed screwdr.
Drive handling CAUTION: Drives are fragile components that mu st be handled with care. T o prevent damage to the computer, damage to a drive, or loss of informat ion, observe thes e precautions: Before removing or i nserting a hard drive, shut down the co mputer.
The following table shows how hu midity affects the electrostatic voltage levels generated by different activities. CAUTION: A product can be d egraded by as little as 700 V.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these grounding guidelin es when packaging and transporting equipment : ● To avoid hand contact, transport produc ts in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts and as semblies with conductive or ap proved containers or packa ging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equipment must include ei ther a wrist st rap or a foot strap at a grounded workstat ion. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a gr ounded system. Wrist stra ps ar e flexible stra ps with a minimum of one megohm ± 10% resistance in the ground cords.
Service label When ordering pa rts or reques ting information, prov ide the computer s erial number an d model numbe r provided on the service label. 3. Pull the optical drive (3) out from the front until the optical drive is completely re moved from t he computer. 4. Remove the 2 PM 2.0 x 3.0 sc rews (1) that secure the optical driv e bracket to the optical drive and then remove the bracket (2) from the optical drive.
5. Insert a straightened paper clip (1) into the release access opening in the bezel. 6. Press the release tab (2) and remove the bezel from the tab side (3) . 7. Remove the beze l (4) from the optical drive. Reverse this procedure to reassemb le and install the opti cal drive.
Before removing the har d drive, follow thes e steps: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are uns ure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. 2. Disconnect all external device s connected to the computer.
4. Remove the 4 PM 3.0 x 3.5 sc rews (4) , and then remove the bracket (5) from the hard drive. Replacing the hard drive Reverse this procedure to reasse mble and i nstall the hard drive.
3. Disconnect the power from the co mputer by firs t unplugging the power co rd from the AC outlet and then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer. 4. Remove the battery (see Battery on page 40 ). 5. Remove the service door (see Service door on page 41 ).
5. Gently press the memory module (3) down, applying pressure to b o th the left and right e dges of the module, until the retent ion clips snap into place.

4. Remove the battery (see Battery on page 40 ). 5. Remove the service door (see Service door on page 41 ). 6. Remove the hard dri ve (see Hard drive on page 44 ). Remove the keyboard: 1. Remove the PM 2.5 × 6.5 screw that secures the ke yboard to the computer.
4. Using a thin, non-conductive to ol, press on the back of the keyboard through the release access hole until the keyb oard disengages from the comput er. NOTE: The keyboar d icon indicates the location of the keyboard release access hole. 5. Turn the computer right-side up with the front toward you.
7. Release the zero i nsertio n force (ZIF) connector (1) to which the ke yboard cable is attached, and then disc onnect th e keyboard cable (2) from the system boa rd.

Remove the top cover: 1. Disconnect these cables from the system board: (1) Power button board ZIF cable (2) Speaker cable (3) TouchPad button board ZIF cable 2. Remove the following screws under the keyboard: (1) Five PM 2.5 x 4.0 (2) One PM 2.5 x 6.
4. Turn the computer upsi de down , with the front toward you. 5. Remove the following ten PM 2.5 x 6.5 scre ws that secure the top cover to the computer.
Reverse this procedure to install the top cover. ENWW Component replacement proced ures 59.

NOTE: The power button board is secured by a screw that was previously removed when releasing the speaker. 2. Release the tape secu ri ng the power button board cable a nd remove the power button boar d and cable.
TouchPad button board Description Spare part n umber TouchP ad butt on bo ard (includes cable) 683548-001 Before removing the TouchPad bu tton board, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are uns ure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
5. Lift the TouchPad button board (4) slightly to perform the next step. 6. Carefully invert the TouchPad button board (1) . 7. Release the ZIF connecto r to which the TouchPad LED board cable is connected, and then disconnect the TouchPad LED board c able (2) from the TouchPad b utton board.
Before removing the TouchPad LED board, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are uns ure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. 2. Disconnect all external device s connected to the computer.

2. Release the wirel ess antenna cables (2) from the clips and the opening in the base enclosure. NOTE: It may be necessary to release the USB boar d ZIF cable to remove the wireless antenna cables. CAUTION: Support the display assembly when remo ving the following screws.
5. If it is necessary to replac e the display bezel or any of the display assembly subcomponents: a. Remove the pl astic scre w covers (1) and the two PM 2.
6. If it is necessary to repl ace the webcam/m icrophone mo dule: a. Detach and release the webc am/microphone module (1) as far as the webcam/microp hone module cable allows. (The webcam/microphone mo dule is attached to the display enclosure with double-sided tape.
b. The hinge covers are held in place by two of the same screws as the display hinges. Using a small tool to pry, re move the hinge covers. c. Lift the top edge of the display enclo sure, (1) and then swing it up and fo rward until i t is perpendicular to the display panel.
8. If it is necessary to re place the displa y hinges: a. Remove the four PM 2.0 × 3. 0 screws (1) that secure the display hi nges to the display panel. b. Remove the display hinges (2) . The display hinges include the display hinges and brackets 9. If it is necessary to re place the di splay panel cable: a.
10. If it is necessary to replace the wire less antenna cables and tra nsceivers: a. Release the wireless antenna cab les from the clips (1) built into the display enclosure. b. Release the wireless antenna transc eivers (2) from the display enclosure.
8. Remove the keyboard (see Keyboard on page 51 ). 9. Remove the top cover (see Top cover on page 56 ). Remove the USB board: 1. If not released already, release the ZI F connector (1) to which the USB boar d cable is connected, and then disconnect the USB b oard cable from the system board .
6. Remove the opti cal drive (see Optical drive on page 42 ). 7. Remove the hard dri ve (see Hard drive on page 44 ). 8. Remove the keyboard (see Keyboard on page 51 ). 9. Remove the top cover (see Top cover on page 56 ). Remove the power connector: 1.

3. Remove the RTC battery (2) from the system board. (The RT C battery is attached to the system board with d ouble-sided ta pe.) Reverse this procedure to install the RTC battery.

4. Remove the fan and heat sink (4) . NOTE: Due to the adhesive quality of the thermal ma terial located between the heat sink and system board components, it may be necessary to move the heat sink from side to side to detach it .
1. If it is necessary to replace the fan, turn the fan and heat sink upside down with the fan toward yo u. 2. Remove the two PM 1.5 × 2. 5 screws (1) that secure the fan to the heat sink and re move the two clips that secure the fan to the heat sink.
PCH heat sink Description Spare part n umber PCH heat sink 683843-001 Before removing the PCH heat sink, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are uns ure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Remove the PCH hea t sink by lifting straight up (2) . NOTE: Due to the adhesive quality of the thermal material locate d between the heat sink and system board components, it may be necessary to move the heat sink from side to side to detach it .
Before removing the pr ocessor, follow th ese steps: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are uns ure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. 2. Disconnect all external device s connected to the computer.
Before removing the optical driv e cable, follow these ste ps: 1. Shut down the computer. If you are uns ure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system. 2. Disconnect all external device s connected to the computer.
5 Using Setup Utility (BIOS) and System Diagnostics (Windows 8) Setup Utility, or Basic Input/Outp ut System (BIOS), controls communi cation between all the input and output devices on the system (su ch as disk dri ves, display, keyboard, mouse, and printe r).
Downloading a BIOS update CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to t he comput er or an unsuccessful in stallation, download and install a BIOS update only when the computer is connected to reliable e xternal power using the AC adapter.
Using System Diagnostics System Diagnostics allows you to run diagnostic tests to determine if the computer hardware is functioning properly. To start System Diagnostics: 1. Turn on or restart the compute r, quickly press es c , and then press f2 . 2.
6 Using Setup Utility (BIOS) and System Diagnostics (Ubuntu Linux) Setup Utility, or Basic Input/Outp ut System (BIOS), controls communi cation between all the input and output devices on the system (su ch as disk dri ves, display, keyboard, mouse, and printe r).
Displaying system info rmation 1. Start Setup Utility. 2. Select the Main menu. System information such as the system time and date, and identification information about the computer is displayed. 3. To exit Setup Utility without changing an y settings, use the arrow keys to select Exit > Exit Discarding Changes , and then press enter .
BIOS version information (also known as ROM date and System BIOS ) can be displayed by using Setup Utility. 1. Start Setup Utility. 2. If the system infor mation is not displa yed, use the arrow keys to select the Main menu. BIOS and other system information is displayed.
Using System Diagnostics System Diagnostics allows you to run diagnostic tests to determine if the computer hardware is functioning properly. To start System Diagnostics: 1. Turn on or restart the computer. While the “P ress the ESC key for St artup Menu” message is displayed in the lower-left corner of the screen, press esc .
