2 Getting to know your computer Finding your hardware an d software information ▲ Select Start > Computer . A list displays all the devices inst alled in your computer, including optical drives, solid-state drives (SSD), or a secondary hard drive.
Right side Component Description (1) Optical drive Reads an optical disc. NOTE: On select models, the optical drive also writes to an optical disc. (2) Optical drive light ● Green: The optical driv e is being accessed. ● Off: The optical drive is idle.
Left side Component Description (1) External monitor port Connects an ex ternal VGA monitor or projector. (2) Vent Enables airflow to cool internal components. NOTE: The computer fan starts up automa tically to cool internal components and prevent overheating.
Component Description (9) Hard drive light ● Blinking white: The hard drive is being accessed. (10) Power light ● White: The computer is on. ● Blinking white: The computer is in the Sleep state, which is an energy-saving mode. The computer shuts off power to the display and other unneeded components.
Display Component Description (1) Internal display switch Turns off the display and initiates Sleep if the display is closed while the power is on. NOTE: The internal display switch is not visible from the outside of the computer. (2) WLAN antennas (2)* Send and receive wirele ss signals to communicate with wireless local area networks (WLANs).
Top TouchPad Component Description (1) TouchPad on/off button Turns the TouchPad on or off. (2) TouchPad light ● On: The TouchPad is off. ● Off: The TouchPad is on. (3) TouchPad zone Moves the on-screen pointer and selects or activates items on the s creen.
Lights Component Description (1) Caps lock light On: Caps lock is on, which switches the keys to all capital letters. (2) Power light ● White: The computer is o n. ● Blinking white: The computer is in the Sleep state, which is an energy-saving mode.
Buttons Component Description Power button ● When the computer is off, p ress the button to turn on the computer. ● When the computer is on, press the b utton briefly to initiate Sleep. ● When the computer is in the Sleep state, pr ess the button briefly to exit Sleep.
Keys Component Description (1) esc key Displays system informatio n when pressed in combination with the fn key. (2) fn key Displays system information when pressed in combination with the esc key. (3) Windows logo key Displays the Windows Start menu.
Bottom Component Description (1) Battery bay Holds the battery. (2) Vents (3) Enable airflow to cool internal components. NOTE: The computer fan starts up automatically to cool internal components and prevent overheating. It is normal for the internal fan to cycle on and off during routine oper ation.
Labels The labels affixed to the computer provid e inform ation you may need wh en you troubles hoot system problems or travel internationa lly with the comput er.
3 Connecting to a network Your computer can tr avel with you wh erever you go. But even at home, you can explor e the globe and access inform ation from millions of we bsites using you r computer and a wi red or wireless network connection. This chapter will hel p you get connected to that world.
To use operating system controls, select Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center . For more information, select Start > Help and Supp ort .
Setting up a WLAN To set up a WLAN an d connect to the In ternet, you need the following equipment: ● A broadband modem (either DSL or cable) (1) and high-speed Internet service purchased from an In.
Connecting to a WLAN To connect to the WLAN, follow these steps: 1. Be sure that the WLAN device is on. If the device is o n, the wireless light is white. If the wirel ess light is amber, press th e wireless button . 2. Click the network status icon i n the notifi cation area, at the far right o f the taskbar.
Connecting to a LAN requires an 8-pin, RJ-45 network cabl e. To connect the ne twork cable, follow these step s: 1. Plug the network cable into the network jack (1) on the compute r. 2. Plug the other end of the network cable into a network wall jack (2) or router.
4 Enjoying entertainment features Use your HP comput er as an enterta inment hub to socialize via the webcam, e n joy and manage your music, and download and watch movies.
Component Description (7) Audio-out (headphone) jack Produces sound when connected to optional powered stereo speakers, headphones, earbuds, a headset, or television audio. WARNING! To redu ce the risk of personal inju ry, adjust the volume before putting on headphones, e arbuds, or a headset.

To connect a monitor o r projector: 1. Connect the VGA ca ble from the monito r or projector to the VGA port o n the computer as shown. 2. Press f4 to alternate the screen image between 4 display states: ● Computer only: Vie w the screen image on the computer only.
To connect a high-d efinition TV or monitor to your co mputer: 1. Connect one end of th e HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the compu ter. 2. Connect the other en d of the cable to the high-definition T V or monitor.
Managing your audio and video files CyberLink PowerDVD (select mo dels only) helps you manage and edit you r photo and vid eo collections. ▲ To start CyberLink PowerDVD, select Start > All Programs > Music, Photo s and Videos , and then click CyberLink PowerDVD .
5 Using the keyboard and pointing devices Your computer allows easy on-scr een navigation with a keyboard and p ointing device. Select models also have action keys or hot key shortcut s that enabl e you to do common tasks . The TouchPad enables you to perform on-scre en functions si milar to those done by an external mouse.
Using ALT GR key combinations Some countries have keyboards wi th an ALT GR key that is used for special key combinations. To type the rupee symbol on a keyboard tha t includes this key, use the alt gr + 4 key combination. Region-specific keyb oards in India can us e the ctr l + shift + 4 keys for the rupee symbol.
Icon Key Descriptio n f8 Plays the next track of an audio CD or the next section of a DVD or a BD. f9 Decreases speaker volume incrementally as long as you hold down the key. f10 Increases speaker volume incrementally as lon g as you hold down the key.
Component Description (4) Left TouchPad button Functions like the left button on an external mouse. (5) Right TouchPad button Functions like the right button on a n external mouse. To move the pointer, slid e one finger across the Touc hPad in the direction you want the pointer to go.
Navigating To move the on-scree n pointer, slide one finger across the Touch Pad in the dire ction you want the pointer to go. Selecting Use the left and right Touch Pad buttons as you w oul d use the corresponding buttons on an external mouse.
Using TouchPad gestures The TouchPad sup ports a variety of gestures that let your finge rs swipe, pinch, an d rotate to manipulate item s on the desktop . To use TouchPad gestures, place two fin gers on the TouchPad at the same time. NOTE: TouchPad gestures are n ot supported in all prog rams.
Scrolling Scrolling is useful for movi ng up, down, or sideways on a page or image. To scroll, place two fingers slightly apart on the TouchPa d , an d then dr ag them acro ss the Touch Pad in an up, down, le ft, or right motion. NOTE: Scrolling speed is co ntrolled by finger speed.
Rotating Rotating allows you to rotate it ems such as photos. T o rotate, anchor your left forefinger in the TouchPad zone. Move the right forefinger around th e an chored finger in a sweeping motion, mo ving from 12 o’clock to 3 o’clock. To reverse the rotation, move your right forefinger from 3 o’clock to 12 o’clock.
6 Managing power Your computer can operate on either battery power or external power. When the computer is only running on batte ry power and an AC power source is not a vailable to charge the battery, it is important to monitor and co nserve the battery charge .
Initiating and e xiting Hibernation The system is set at the factory to initiate Hibernation after a specific period of inactivity, depend ing on whether th e computer is running on battery po wer or on extern al power, or when the battery reaches a critical battery le vel.
You can also create your own power plan and cu stomize it to suit your needs. Use HP Power Manager (select mode ls only) or Wi nd ows Control Panel to select a p ower plan or to create your own plan. To start HP Power Manager, select Start > Control Panel > Hardware and So und > HP Power Manager .

Disposing of a user-r eplaceable battery WARNING! To reduce the risk of fire or bu rns, do not disassemble, crush, or puncture; do not short external co ntacts; do not disp ose of in fire or w ater. See the Regulatory, Safety a nd Environmental No tices for p roper battery disposal.
The Shut down command closes all open programs , including the operatin g system, and then turns off the display an d computer. Shut down the co mputer under any o f the following cond itions: ● Whe.
7 Managing and sharing information Drives are digita l storage devices or solid-state drives that help yo u st ore, manage, sh are, and access information . Your computer has an in ternal hard drive th at stores your comp uter's softwar e, operating system, as well as prov iding storage for all of your per sonal files.
▲ Connect the USB cab le for the device to the USB po rt. NOTE: The USB port on your compu ter may look slig htly different from the illustration in this section.
2. Insert the card into the digi tal storage slot, and then press in on the card until it is firmly seated . A sound indicates that th e device has been detected, a nd a menu of options disp lays.
● Make sure you have installed the la test softw are updates for the drive. ● If the disc you a re using is not clean, wipe it with a dry, lint-fre e, soft cloth.
4. Hold the disc by the edges to avoid tou c hing the flat surfaces and position the disc label-side up over the tray spindle. NOTE: If the tra y is not fully acces sible, tilt t he disc carefully to position it over t he spindle. 5. Gently press the disc (3) down onto the tray spind le until the disc snaps into place.
2. Remove the disc (3) from the tray by ge ntly pressing dow n on the spindle while lifting the outer edges of the di sc. Hold the disc by the edg es and avoid touching the flat surfaces. NOTE: If the tra y is not fully acces sible, tilt the disc carefully as you remove it.
8 Maintaining your computer It is important to perform regular maintenance to keep your computer in optimal con dition. This chapter provides information abou t improving the perfo rmance of your comp uter by running too ls such as Disk Defragmenter and Disk Clea nup and by replacing a hard drive or adding memory.
CAUTION: To prevent information loss or an unresponsive system: Before removing or installing a drive, shut down the computer. If yo u are unsure whether the computer is off, in the Sleep state, or in Hiberna tion, tu rn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
Remove the hard drive: 1. Loosen the hard drive cover screw (1) (or screws depending o n your model), and th en lift up (2 ) and remove the cover (3) . 2. Disconnec t the hard drive cable (1) from the system board. 3. Lift the hard drive (2) out of the hard drive bay.
6. Remove the ha rd drive (3) from the bracket. To install a ha rd drive, reverse this procedure. Using Disk Defragmenter As you use your comput er over time, the files on the hard drive beco me fragmented.
To run Disk Cleanu p: 1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup . 2. Follow the on-screen instructions. Adding or replacing memory modules Adding memory can help i m prove your computer's performance. Your computer is like your physical work area.
b. Grasp th e edge of th e memory module (2) , an d then gently pull the module out of the memory module slot. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the memory module, hold the memory module by the edges only. Do not touch th e components on the memory modul e.
9. Replace the wireless an d memory module compartmen t cover. 10. Replace the battery. 11. Turn the computer ri ght-side up, and then re connect external power and extern al devices. 12. Turn on the computer. Updating programs and drivers HP recommends that you up date your prog rams and drivers on a regular basis to the latest versions.
Cleaning the display, sides, and cover Gently wipe the display us ing a soft, lint-free cl oth moistened with an alcohol-free glass cleaner. Allow the display to dry before clo sing the computer co ver. Use a pre-moistened di sposable wipe to clean the si des and cove r.
● If the computer will be unused and disconnected from external power for m ore than 2 weeks, remove the battery an d store it separa tely. ● If you are shipp ing the comput er or a drive, use suitable prot ective pack aging and label the package “FRAGILE.
9 Securing your computer and information Computer security is essential for protectin g the confiden tiality, integrity, and avail ability of your information.
Additional passwords can be set in Windows or in the HP Setup Utility (BIOS) that is preinstalled on your computer. You may find it helpful to use the same passwo rd fo r a Setup Utility (BIO S) feature and for a Windows security feature.
Setting Setup Utility (BIOS) passwords Password Function Administrator password ● Must be entered each time you access Setup U tility (BIOS). ● If you forget your administrator password, you cannot access Setup Utility (BIOS). NOTE: The administrator password can be used in place of the power-on password.

Using firewall soft ware Firewalls are designed to preven t unauthorized access to a system or network. A firewall can be software you inst all on your computer and/o r networ k, or it can be a combination of bo th hardware and softwar e.
Backing up your software ap plications and information Regularly back up your software ap plications and informatio n to protect them from being pe rmanently lost or damaged through a virus attack o r a software or hardware fa ilure. For more info rmation, see Backing up, restoring, and recovering on page 62 .
10 Using Setup Utility (BIOS) and System Diagnostics Setup Utility, or Basic In put/Output System (BIOS), controls co mmunication between all the input and output devices on the system (such as disk drives , display, keyboard, mous e, and printer).
Downloading a BIOS update CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the computer or an unsuccessful installation, downlo ad and install a BIOS update only when the computer is connected to reliable external power u sing the AC adapter.
To start System Diagnostics: 1. Turn on or restart the compu ter. While the “Press the ESC ke y for Startup Me nu” message is displayed in the lo wer-left corner of the screen , press esc . When the Startup Menu is displayed, press f2 . 2. Click the diagnostic test you want to run, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
11 Backing up, restoring, and recovering Your computer includes t ools provided by the operating system and HP to help you safeguard your information and re trieve it if ever needed. Creating backups 1. Use HP Recovery Manage r to create re covery media immediately after you set up the working computer.
Creating the r ecovery media 1. Select Start and type recovery in the sear ch field. Select Re covery Ma nager from the list. Allow the action to continue, if prom pted. 2. Click Recovery Media Creation . 3. Follow the on-screen instru ctions to continue.
Tips for a successful backup ● Number backup discs befo re inserting them into the optical drive. ● Store person al files in the Documen ts, Music, Pictures, and Videos libraries, and ba ck up these folders periodically. ● Save customized sett ings in a w indow, toolbar, or menu bar by taking a screen shot of yo ur settings.
To restore, see Restoring specific file s using Window s Backup and Restore on page 65 . Restore and recovery Restoring to a previou s system restore point Sometimes installing a softw are program causes your computer or Windows to behave unpredictably.
● If the recovery media do not work, you can obta in recovery discs for your system from the H P website. ● The Minimized Image Reco very option is recommende d for advanced use rs only. All hardware- related drivers an d software are re- installed, bu t other software applications are not.
To change the boot o rder for a recovery flash drive: 1. Insert the flash drive into a USB port. 2. Restart the computer. 3. Press esc while the computer is re starting, and then press f9 fo r boot options. 4. Select the flash drive from th e boot options window.
12 Specifications Input power The power information in this section may be helpfu l if you plan to travel internationally with the computer. The computer op erates on DC power, whi c h can be sup p lied by an AC or a DC po wer source. The AC power source must be rated at 100–240 V, 50 –60 Hz.

Troubleshooting Disc drive problems If the disc tray fails to open normally, follow these steps: 1. Insert the end of a paper clip into the release access (1) in the front bezel of the drive. 2. Press in ge ntly on the paper clip un til the tray is released, and then pull out the tr ay (2) until it stops.
Cannot connect to a WLAN If you have a problem con necting to a WLAN, confir m that the integrated WLAN device is turned on and properly installed on your computer. 1. If the wireless lig ht is off or ambe r, press the wi reless button, wireles s switch, or wireless key to turn the wireless device on.
Some networks change the SSID or n etwork keys used in their routers or access points on a regular basis to improve se curity. You must chan ge the correspon ding code in your comp uter accordingly.
To get the latest version of the WLAN de vice software for your computer, follow these steps: 1. Open your Internet browser an d go to http://www.hp. com/ support . 2. Select your country or region. 3. Click the option for software an d driver downl oads, and then type yo ur computer model nu mber in the search box.
Resolving a low b attery level when th e co mputer cann ot exit Hib ernation When the computer lacks su fficient power to exit Hibernation, follow these steps: 1. Replace the discharged user-replaceable ba tter y with a charged batte ry, or connec t the AC adapter to the compute r and to external power.
