Left side Component Description (1) Power connector Connects an AC adapter. (2) Battery light ● White: The computer is connected to external power. If a battery installed, the battery is fully charged. ● Amber: The computer is connected to external power and the battery is charging.
Display Component Description (1) Internal display switch Turns off the display or initiates Sleep if the display is closed while the power is on. NOTE: The display switch is not visible from the outside of the computer. (2) WLAN antennas (2)* Send and receive wirele ss signals to comm unicate with wireless local area networks (WLAN).
Bottom Component Description (1) Battery bay Holds the battery. (2) SIM slot (select models only) Supports a wireless subscri ber identity mo dule (SIM). The SIM slot is located inside the battery bay. For more information, refer to the HP Notebook Refere nce Guide .
3 HP QuickWeb (select models only) Getting started The HP QuickWeb en vironment provides a fun and enga ging way to perform many o f your favorite activities. Your computer is ready to go within second s of starting HP QuickWeb, allowing you to rapidly access the Inte rnet, widgets, and communication programs.

Using an Internet service provider (ISP) Before you can connect to the In ternet, you must establish an account with an Intern et service provider (ISP).
Connecting to an existing WLAN 1. Turn on th e compute r. 2. Be sure that the WL AN device is on. 3. Click the network icon in the notificat ion area, at the far right of the taskb ar. 4. Select a network to conn ect to. 5. Click Connect . 6. If requir ed, ente r the se curity k ey.
Configuring a wireless router For help in setting up a WLAN, refer to the informat ion provided by your ro uter manufacture r or your ISP. The Windows operating system also provides tools to help you set up a new wireless network.

Using the keyboard Identifying the hotkeys A hotkey is a combination of the fn key (1) and either the esc key (2) or the b key (3) To use a hot key: ▲ Briefly press the fn key (1) , and then briefly press the second key of the hotkey combination. Hotkey combination Description fn + esc Displays system information.
CAUTION: Use extreme care when maki ng changes in Setup Utility. Errors can prevent the computer from operating prop erly. Using pointing devices NOTE: In addition to the pointing devices included with your computer, you can use an external USB mouse (purchased sep arately) by connecting it to one of the USB ports on the computer .
Turning the Touc hPad off and on To turn the Tou chPad off and on, quickly do uble-tap the T ouchPad on/off b utton. NOTE: The TouchPad light is o ff when the TouchPad is on. The TouchPad lig ht and on-screen di splay icons indi cate the Tou chPad status when the TouchPa d is turned off or o n.
Selecting Use the left and right Touch Pad buttons as you w oul d use the correspon ding buttons on an external mouse. Using TouchPad gestures The TouchPad sup ports a variety of gestures. To use TouchPad gestures, place two fin gers on the TouchPad at the same time.
Scrolling Scrolling is useful for movi ng up, down, or sideways on a page or image. To scroll, place two fingers slightly apart on the TouchPa d, an d then dr ag them acro ss the Touch Pad in an up, d own, left, or right motion. NOTE: Scrolling speed is co ntrolled by finger speed.

Inserting or removing the battery NOTE: For additional information on using the battery, refer to the HP Notebook Refe rence Guide . Inserting the battery To insert the battery: ▲ Align the battery (1) with the outer edge of the ba ttery bay, and then rotate the ba ttery (2) into the battery bay until it is firmly seated.
2. Pivot the battery (2) upward, and then remove the battery (3) from the comp uter. 30 Chapter 6 Mainte nance.
Replacing or upgrading the hard drive CAUTION: To prevent information loss or an unresponsive system: Shut down the computer before removing the hard drive from the hard drive bay. Do no t remove the hard drive while the computer is on, in th e Sleep state, or in Hibern ation.
8. Pull up the hard drive tab (3) , and th en remove the hard drive (4) from the hard drive bay at an angle. Installing a hard drive 1. Insert the ru bber spacers on the drive into the op enings (1) on the hard drive bay. 2. Insert the hard d rive into the ha rd drive bay (2) .
4. Connect the hard driv e connector cable (4) . 5. Lower the service door onto th e computer (1) , and then slide the door (2) toward the ba ttery ba y until the battery/service door latch snaps into place. 6. Replace the battery. 7. Reconnect external po wer and external d evices.
Adding or replacing memory modules The computer ha s two memory module slo ts. Th e capa city of the computer can be upgraded by adding a memory mo dule to the vacant expansio n me mory module slot or by upgrading th e existing memory module in the prim ary memory module slot.
b. Grasp th e edge of th e memory module (2) , and then ge ntly pull the memory module out of the memory module slot. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the memory module, hold the memory module by the edges only. Do not touch th e components on the memory modul e.
c. Gently press the memory mo dule (3) down, applying pr essure to both the left an d right edges of the memo ry module, until the retenti on clips snap i nto place. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the memo ry module, be sure that you do not bend th e module.
7 Backup and recovery Your computer includes t ools provided by the operating system and HP to help you safeguard your information and restore it if ever needed.
Restore In the event of hard drive failure, to restore your system to its factory image you will need a set of recovery discs or a recovery flash drive that you can create using HP Recovery Manager. HP recommends that you use this softwa re to create either a set of re covery discs or a recovery flash drive immediately afte r software setu p.
To create a set of recovery discs or a recovery flash drive: 1. Select Start > All Programs > Security and Protection > HP Recovery Manage r > HP Recovery Media Cr eation .
Restoring using the restor e media 1. If possible, bac k up all personal files. 2. Insert the first recovery disc into the optical drive on your computer or an optional external optical drive, and then restart the co mputer. – or – Insert th e recov ery flash d rive into a USB por t on your computer, and th en restart the computer.
Changing the computer boot order To change the boot or der for recovery discs: 1. Restart the computer. 2. Press esc while the computer is re starting, and then press f9 fo r boot options. 3. Select Internal CD/DVD ROM Drive from the boot option s window.
To create a scree n shot: 1. Display the screen you want to save. 2. Copy the screen image: To copy only the ac tive window, p ress alt + prt sc . To copy the entire screen, press prt sc . 3. Open a word-processing document, and th en select Edit > Paste .
Using Windows system restore points A system restore point allows you to save and name a snapshot of your hard drive at a specific point in time. You can then recove r back to that po int if you want to reverse subsequent changes.
