1 Fir s t - time s etup Id entify required hardw are T o set up the computer for the f irst time, you will need the computer , A C adapter , power cord, and the battery .

F irst- time setup Set up t he com puter T o set up the computer , you will 1. Insert the battery into the computer . 2. Connect the computer to external power . ✎ The battery begins to charge. 3. T urn on the computer . 4. Set up the software. 5. Create recovery discs (recommended).
F irst- time setup Step 1 : Inser t th e bat ter y T o insert a battery: 1. T urn the computer upside do wn on a flat surface, with the battery bay to ward you. 2. Slide the battery 1 into the battery bay until it is seated. The battery release latches 2 automatically lock the battery into place.
F irst- time setup Step 2 : Connec t t he comp uter to e xternal po w er ✎ Po wer cords and A C outlets vary in appearance b y region and country . T o connect the computer to external A C power: 1. Plug the AC adapter into the po wer connector 1 on the computer .
1–6 Getting Started F irst- time setup When the computer recei ves A C po wer , the battery begins to charge and the battery light (on the front of the computer) is turned on.

1–8 Getting Started F irst- time setup 3. Press the power b utton 1 . The po wer light next to the po wer button 2 and the po wer light on the front of the computer 3 are turned on, and you are prompted to begin softw are setup.
F irst- time setup Step 4: Set up the softwa re After the computer is turned on, it will go through a brief software setup. F ollow the on-screen instructions to set up the software. Note the follo wing: ■ After you respond to the setup prompt, you must complete the entire setup process without interruption.

2–8 Getting Started Ne xt steps Updat e y our softw ar e Most software, including the operating system, is updated frequently by the manuf acturer or provider . Important updates to the software included with the computer may ha ve been released since the computer left the factory .
Ne xt steps T urn of f th e comp uter correctly Whene ver possible, turn of f the computer by using the standard shutdo wn procedure: 1. Save your w ork and close all open programs. 2. Shut down the computer through the operating system b y clicking Start , clicking the arro w next to the Lock b utton, and then clicking Shut Down .
3 T roubleshooting T roubleshooting resources If you experience computer problems, follo w the troubleshooting steps belo w: 1. Refer to “ Quick troubleshooting , ” next in this chapter . 2. Access additional information about the computer and W eb site links through Help and Support.
T roubleshooting Qui c k troubleshooting The compu ter is unab le to star t up T o turn on the computer , press the power b utton. When the computer is turned on, the po wer light is turned on. If the computer and the po wer light are not turned on when you press the po wer button, adequate po wer may not be av ailable to the computer .
Tro u b l e s h o o t i n g The compu ter sc reen is blank If the computer is on but the screen is blank, the computer may be in the Sleep state or in Hibernation or may not be set to display the image on the computer screen. T ry the suggestions below to resolve the issue: ■ T o exit Sleep or Hibernation, briefly press the po wer button.
T roubleshooting Soft war e is func tioning abn ormally If the software becomes unresponsi ve or responds abnormally , restart the computer by clicking Start , clicking the arro w next to the Lock button, and then clicking Restart .
Tro u b l e s h o o t i n g The computer is turn ed on but not res po nd in g If the computer is turned on, but not responding to softw are or ke yboard commands, turn of f the computer by using the standard shutdo wn procedure: 1. Save your w ork and close all open programs.
T roubleshooting The compu ter is unusually warm It is normal for the computer to feel warm to the touch while it is in use. But if the computer feels unusually warm, it may be ov erheating because a vent is blocked. If you suspect that the computer is ov erheating, allow the computer to cool to room temper ature.
Tro u b l e s h o o t i n g An e xte rna l d e vi ce is n ot workin g If an external de vice does not function as expected: ■ T urn on the device as instructed in the de vice user guide. Some de vices may not be powered b y the computer , and must be turned on before the computer is turned on.
T roubleshooting The h om e wire les s n et w o rk co nn ec ti on is not w orkin g If a home wireless network connection is not working as expected: ■ Be sure that the wireless light on the computer is on. If the light is of f, press the wire less button to turn it on.

B Conn ec t to t he In ternet from y our hom e The computer includes hardware and software that allo ws you to connect to the Internet. Before you can access the Internet, you must ■ Choose an Internet service provider (ISP). ■ Choose the type of Internet connection you want, such as broadband, wireless, or dial-up, and connect the hardware.

Back up and reco very Create reco v er y disc s (highly recommended) After setting up the computer for the first time, you can create a set of recov ery discs of the full factory image, using Recovery Media Creator in the HP Backup and Recov ery Manager .
