Top TouchPad Component Description (1) TouchPad light Turns the TouchPad on and off. Quickly double-tap the TouchPad light to turn the TouchPad on and off. (2) Left TouchPad button Functions like the left button on an external mouse. (3) Right TouchPad button Functions like the right button on an exter nal mouse.
Lights Component Description (1) TouchPad light ● Amber: The TouchPad is off. ● Off: The TouchPad is on. (2) Caps lock light ● On: Caps lock is on. ● Off: Caps lock is off. (3) Mute light ● Amber: Computer sound is off. ● Off: Computer sound is on.
Keys Component Description (1) esc key Displays system information when pressed in combination with the fn key. (2) fn key Displays system information when pressed in combination with the esc key. (3) Windows® logo key Displays the Windows Start menu.

3 HP QuickWeb ● Enabling HP QuickWeb ● Starting HP QuickWeb ● Identifying the QuickWe b LaunchBar ● Configuring the ne twork ● Starting Microsoft Windows ● Turning HP QuickWeb on and off After completing the Windows setup the first time you turn on the comput er, the QuickWeb setup screen appears.
Enabling HP QuickWeb Follow the on-screen instructions to enable QuickWeb. After you have enabled QuickWeb, the QuickWeb Home screen appe ars whenever you turn on th e computer. NOTE: To turn on or tur n off HP Quick Web, refe r to the section Turning HP Qui ckWeb on and off on page 22 .
Starting HP QuickWeb 1. Turn on th e compute r. The HP QuickWeb Ho me screen appear s. 2. Click an icon on the Q uickWeb Home screen to laun ch an application. NOTE: When the HP Q uickWeb Home screen f irst a ppears, it displays an automatic time r above the Start Windows icon.
Identifying the QuickWeb LaunchBar The QuickWeb L aunchBar contains the Q uickWeb control icons (1) , Lau nchBar icons (2) , and the notification icons (3) . Identifying the QuickWeb control icons Icon Function Launches the Windows ope rating system. Shuts the computer down.
Icon Function Launches Music Player. Select and play music stored on your hard drive, external drives, or external media. Supports .mp3, .aac (MPEG-4), and aud io CD formats. Launches Photo Viewer. Browse ph otos stored on your hard drive or external drive.
Icon Function Launches the Power Control dialog box to see information abo ut battery capacity: ● When the computer is connected to AC power, the icon appears wi th an AC power co rd. ● When the computer is running on battery power, the icon appears as only a battery.
Configuring the network You can set up a wir eless connection in QuickWeb using th e HP QuickWeb Co nfiguration T ool. NOTE: Bluetooth te chnology is not su pported in H P QuickWeb. To acce ss this tool: 1. Click the Settings icon in the system tray. 2.
Starting Microsoft Windows NOTE: If QuickWeb has been activated, it will start ev ery time you turn on your computer. To start Microsoft® Wind ows, you must either wa it until the automatic timer cou nts to zero after 15 seconds, or click th e Start Windows icon in the Q uickW eb Home scree n.
Turning HP QuickWeb on and off 1. Select Start > All Programs > HP QuickWeb > HP QuickWeb Configuration Tool . The QuickWeb dialog box is displayed. 2. Select the Status tab. 3. Select the Enable or Disable check box to turn on or turn off QuickWeb.

Using an Internet service provider (ISP) Before yo u can connect to the Internet, you must estab lish an ISP account. Con tact a local ISP to purchase Internet service and a modem. The ISP will help set up the modem, install a network ca ble to connect your wireless computer to th e modem, and test the Intern et service.
Connecting to an existing WLAN 1. Turn on th e compute r. 2. Be sure that the WL AN device is on. 3. Click the network icon in the notificati on area, at the far right of the taskb ar. 4. Select a network to conn ect to. 5. Click Connect . 6. If requir ed, ente r the se curity k ey.
Setting up a new WLAN network Required equipmen t: ● A broadband modem (either DSL or cable) (1) and high-spee d Internet service purchased from an Internet service provider (ISP) ● A wireless router (purchased separately) (2) ● Your new wireless computer (3) NOTE: Some modems have a built-in wireless route r.
Configuring a wireless router For help in setting up a WLAN, refer to the informat ion provided by your ro uter manufacture r or your ISP. The Windows operating system also provides tools to help you set up a new wireless network.

Using the keyboard Identifying the hotkey A hotkey is a combination of the fn key (1) and the esc key (2) . Hotkey Desc riptio n fn+esc Displays information about system hardware components and the system BIOS version number.
Identifying the action keys Action keys, located at th e top of the keyboar d, execute specifical ly assigned functions. Press a key to activate its as signed functi on. Using keypads The computer sup ports an optional extern al numeri c keypad or an optio nal external keyboard th at includes a numeric keypad. Using the keyboard 31.
Using pointing devices NOTE: In addition to the pointing devices included with your computer, you can use an external USB mouse (purchased sep arately) by connecting it to one of the USB ports on the computer .
Navigating To move the pointer, slid e one finger across the Touc hPad in the direction you want the pointer to go. Selecting Use the left and right Touch Pad buttons like the corresp onding buttons on an external mouse. Using TouchPad gestures The TouchPad sup ports a variety of gestures.
3. Select the ge sture that you want to turn on or off. 4. Click Apply , and then click OK . NOTE: The computer also supports ad ditional Touc hPad features. To view and turn on these features, click the Synaptics icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar.
Scrolling Scrolling is useful for movi ng up, down, or sideways on a page or image. To scroll, place two fingers slightly apart on the TouchPa d, an d then dr ag them acro ss the Touch Pad in an up, d own, left, or right motion. NOTE: Scrolling speed is co ntrolled by finger speed.
Rotating Rotating allows you to rotate it ems such as photos. T o rotate, anchor your left forefinger in the TouchPad zone. Move the right forefinger a round th e an chored finger in a sweeping motion, mo ving from 12 o’clock to 3 o’clock. To reverse the rotation, move your right forefinger from 3 o’clock to 12 o’clock.

Replacing the battery Inserting the battery To insert the battery: 1. Save your work and shut down the computer. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer. 3. Unplug the p ower cord from the AC outlet. 4. With the display close d, position the co mputer upsi de down on a flat surface w ith the battery b ay toward y ou.
Removing the battery To remove the battery: CAUTION: Removing a battery that is the sole po wer source for the comp uter can cause loss of information. To prevent loss of info rmation, save your work and init iate Hibernation or shu t down the computer through Wind ows before removi ng the battery.
Removing or replacing the vanity cover CAUTION: To prevent information loss or an unresponsive system: Save your work and sh ut down the co mputer before ad ding or replacing a memory mo dule, hard drive, or SIM. If you are not sure wh ether the compu ter is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on by pressing the power button.

Replacing the hard drive Removing the hard drive 1. Save your work and shut down the computer. 2. Disconnect all ext ernal devices connected to the computer. 3. Unplug the p ower cord from the AC outlet. 4. Remove the batt ery (see Removing the battery on page 39 ).
4. Grasp the tab on the hard drive cable co nnector (3) , a nd then carefully press the hard d rive cable connector onto the system b oard until it snaps into place. 5. Replace the vanity cover (see Replacing the vanity cover on pa ge 40 ). 6. Replace the battery (see Inserting the battery on pa ge 38 ).
Replacing the memory module The computer has one memo ry module slot. The cap acity of the comput er can be upgr aded by replacing the existing memo ry modu le in the memory module slot. WARNING! To reduce the risk of electric shock and damage to the e quipment, unplug the power cord and remove all batteries be fore installing a memory module.
CAUTION: T o prevent damage to the memory module, ho ld the memory module by the edges only. Do no t touch the co mponents on the memory module. a. Align the notched edge (1) of the memo ry module with the tab in the memory module slot.
Updating programs and drivers HP recommends that you up date your prog rams and driver s on a regular basis with the la test versions. Go to http://www.hp.com/ support to download the l atest versions. You can also register to receive automatic update n otifications when they become a vailable.
7 Backup and recovery ● Recovery discs ● Performing a system recovery ● Backing up your information Recovery after a system failure is as good as your most recent backup. HP recommends that you create recovery discs immediately after software se tup.
Recovery discs HP recommends that you create recove ry discs to be sure that you c an restore your compute r to its original factory state if the hard driv e fails, or if for any reason you cann ot recover using the recovery partition tools. Create the se discs after setting up th e computer for th e first time.
Note the following when performing a system recovery: ● You can recover on ly files that you have prev i ously backed up. HP recommen ds that you use HP Recovery Manager to create a set of recovery discs (entire drive backup) as soon as you set up the computer.
Backing up your information You should back up your co mputer files on a regular schedule to maintain a current backup . You can back up your information to an optional external hard d rive, a network drive, or discs.
Using system restore points A system restore point allows you to save and name a snapshot of your hard drive at a specific point in time. You can then recove r back to that po int if you want to reverse subsequent changes.
