4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required You will need the following tools to comple te the removal and re placement procedures: ● Flat-bla ded screw .
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the device, be sure that c ables are placed in th eir proper locations during the reassembly p rocess. Improp er cable placem ent can damage th e device. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avoid damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensit ive to electrost atic discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and st ructure determine the deg ree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines when packaging and transp orting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conduct ive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include either a wrist strap o r a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded system. Wrist straps are flexibl e straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±1 0% resi stance in the ground cords.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement procedures. There are as many as 3 3 screws, in 5 different sizes, that mu st be re moved, replaced, o r loosened when servicing the computer. Make specia l note of each screw size and l ocation during removal and replacement.

6. Use the Mylar tab (5) to remove the hard dr ive from the computer. 7. If it is necessary to replace the ha rd drive bra cket, follow t hese steps: a. Disconnect the ca ble adapter from the hard drive. b. Remove the 4 Phillip s 3.0×3.0 screws (1) that secure the hard drive bracket to the drive.
c. Remove the hard drive bracket (2) . d. Remove the Mylar from the drive (3) . Reverse this procedure to rea sse mble and install the h ard drive. 42 Chapter 4 Remova l and replacement procedures.

3. Remove the WWAN or GPS module (3) by pulling the module away from the slot at an angle. NOTE: WWAN and GPS modules are designed with a notch (4) to prevent incorrect inse rtion of the module into the slot. Reverse this procedure to in stall the WWAN or GPS module.

3. Remove the WLAN module (3) by pulling the module away from the slot at an angle. NOTE: WLAN module s are designed with a no tch (4) to prevent incorrect insertion of the WLAN module in to the WLAN module slot. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the WLAN module.

2. Grasp the edge of the memory module (2) , and then pull it out of the memory module slot. NOTE: Memory modules a re designed with a n otch (3) to prevent incorrect insertion into the memory module sl ot. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the memory module.
2. Remove the RTC b attery (2) from the co mputer. NOTE: The RTC battery is attach ed with double-sided tape. Reverse this procedure to in stall the RTC battery.

Remove the keyboard: 1. Remove the 3 Phillips 2 .0×5.0 screws that secure the keyboard to the computer. 2. Turn the computer right-side up, with the front toward you. 3. Open the compute r as far as possible. 4. Lift the rear edge of th e keyboard until it rests at an angl e.
5. Release the zero inserti on force (ZIF) conne ctor (1) to which the keyboard cab le is attached, an d then disconnect the keyb oard cable (2) 6. Remove the keyboard.
Top cover NOTE: The top cover inclu des the speakers, T ouchPad and TouchPad cable . Description Spare part nu mber Top cover (includes T ouchPad, Touc hPad cable, and sp eaker) 633488-001 Before removing the top cover, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer.
3. Remove the interior hi nge covers (2) . 4. Turn the computer upsid e down, with the front toward you. 5. Remove the rear rubber feet, and then remo ve the 2 Phillips 2.5×5.0 screws (1) unde r the feet. 6. Remove the 4 Phillips 2. 0×5.0 screws (2) that secure th e top cover to the base enclosure.
11. Release the ZIF connecto r (4) to which the TouchPad button cable is con nected, and then disconnect the TouchPad button cable (5) from the system board.
13. Release the top cove r by lifting the front ed ge until it di sengages from the base enclosure. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the top cover. Display assembly Description Spare part nu mber 25.
Remove the display assembly: 1. Close the computer. 2. Turn the computer upsid e down, with the front toward you. 3. Release the WLAN a ntenna cables (1) from the clips (2) built into the base enclosur e. 4. Turn the computer right-side up, with the front toward you.
7. Release the wireless an tenna cables (2) from th e clip built into the base enclosure. CAUTION: Su pport the display assembly when removing the fol lowing screws. Failure to support the display assembly ca n result in damage to the display assembly and other device components.
9. Remove the display assembly (2) . Remove the display ass embly hinges: 1. Remove the hinge cove rs from the hinges. Th e display hinge covers are ava ilable using spare part number 633483-001 .
4. Remove the display hinges (4) . The display hinges are available u sing spare part number 633482-001 5. If you need to remove th e display bezel, loosen the top of th e bezel (1) , loos en the left and rig ht sides of th e bezel (2) , loosen the bottom of the bezel (3) , and then lift the bezel from the display (4) .
6. If you need to remove the webcam module, unp lug the cable from the webca m module (1) , remove the silver Phillips 2.0x3.0 screw (2) , an d then lift the modu le from the display (3) . The webcam module is avai lable usin g spare part number 631703-001.
8. If you need to remove the display/webcam cable assembly, disconne ct the display cable (1) from the connector (2) on the back of the displa y panel. The display/webcam cable is av ailable using spare part number 6 33490-001. 9. Lift the display/webcam ca ble (1) from its routing path (2) in the display enclosure.
10. If you need to remove the antenna cables, lift the cables (1) from the routing path (2 ) in the display enclosure. The an tenna cables are av ailable using spare p art number 631698-0 01.
Fan/heat sink assembly Description Spare part nu mber Fan/heat sink assembly (includes r eplacement thermal mater ial) 622330-001 NOTE: To prop erly ventilate the comput er, allow at le ast a 7.6-cm (3-in) clea rance on the l eft side of the computer.
4. Remove the fan/ heat sink assembly (4) . NOTE: Due to the adhe sive quality of the thermal material locate d between the fan/heat sink assembly and system board comp onents, it may be necessary to move the fan/heat s ink assembly from side to side to detach it from the system board.

When replacing the system board, be sure that the following components are removed from the defective system board and installe d on the replacement system board: ● SIM (see SIM on page 37 ) ● WWA.
4. Remove the system board (3) by sliding it up an d away from the base en closure. Reverse the procedure to install the system board. 68 Chapter 4 Remova l and replacement procedures.

Remove the power connector cable by grasping the connector and removing it from the b a se enclosure. Reverse this procedure to in stall the power connector cable.
5 Setup Utility Starting Setup Utility Setup Utility is a ROM-based information and custom ization utility that can be used even when your Windows operating system is not working. The utility reports information abou t the computer and prov ides settings for st artup, security, and other preferences.
Navigating and selectin g in Setup Utility Because Setup Utility is not Wind ows based, it does not support the TouchP ad. Navigation and selection are by keystroke.
Exiting Setup Utility You can exit Setup Utility with or without saving changes. ● To exit Setup Utility and save your changes from the current session: If the Setup Utility menu s are not visible, press esc to return to the menu di splay. Then use the arrow keys to select Exit > Exit Saving Changes , and then press enter .

7 Backup and recovery ● Recovery discs ● Performing a system recovery ● Backing up your information Recovery after a system failure is as good as your most recent backup. HP recommends that you create recovery discs immediately after software se tup.
NOTE: If your computer does not include an integrat ed optical drive, yo u can use an opti onal external optical drive (pur chased separately) to create recovery discs, or you can purchase recovery discs for your computer from th e HP Web site.
Recovering using the dedicated recover y partition (select models only) On some models, you can perform a recovery fro m the partition on the hard drive, accessed by clicking Start or pressing the f11 key. This type of recovery rest ores the computer to its factory condition without using recovery discs.
Recovering using the recovery discs 1. If possible, bac k up all personal files. 2. Insert the first recovery disc into the optical drive on your computer or an optional external optical drive, and then restart the computer. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Using system restore points A system restore point allows you to save and name a snapshot of your hard drive at a specific point in time. You can then recove r back to that po int if you want to reverse subsequent changes. NOTE: Recovering to an earl ier restore point does not affect data files saved or e-mails created since the last restore point.

9 Recycling Battery When a battery has reached the end of its use f ul life, do n ot dispose of the ba ttery in general household waste. Follo w the local laws and regulati ons in your ar ea for computer b attery disposal. Display WARNING! The backlight contains mercury.
Perform the following ste ps: 1. Remove all screw covers (1) and screws (2 ) that secure the display bezel to the display assembly. 2. Lift up and out o n the left and ri ght inside edges (1) and the top and b o ttom inside edges (2) of the display beze l until the bezel disengag es from the display assemb ly.
4. Disconnect all disp lay panel cables (1) from the display i n verter and remove the in verter 2. 5. Remove all screws (1) that secure the display panel a ssembly to the display enclosure. 6. Remove the display panel assembly (2) from the display enclosure.
10. Remove the display pan el frame (2) from the display panel. 11. Remove the screws (1) that secure the backlight cover to the display panel. 12. Lift the top edge of the backlig ht cover (2) and swing it outward. 13. Remove the backlight cover. 14.
17. Remove the backlight frame from th e display panel. WARNING ! The backlight contains mercury. Exercise caution when removing and handling t he backlight to avoid damag ing this compon ent and causin g exposure to the mercu r y. 18. Remove the backlight from the backlight frame.
