2 - 1 2 Getting Star ted Overview The Thor VM2 V ehicle Moun t Computer (VMC) is a r u gged, vehicle mounted computer running a Microsoft ® Windows ® CE 6 operating system and capable of wireless data communications from a f ork-lift tr uck or an y proper ly configured vehicle.
2 - 2 If you ordered additional accessories for the Thor VM2, verify they are also included with the order . K eep the or iginal packag ing mater ial in the e vent the Thor VM2 should need to be returned for servi ce. For details, see Product Service and Repair (page 11-1).

2 - 6 Bac klights and Indicators Displa y Backlight There are sev eral configuration opti ons f or the Thor VM2 displa y backlight: P ower Management The display backlight is controlled by pow er management. When th e user activity timer e xpires, the displa y backlight is turne d off .
2 - 7 Po w e r U p The Quick Mount Smar t Doc k has a power s witch on the back. The “On” side of thi s roc ker s witch has a raised bump to allow the state of the s witch to be deter mined when the s witch may not be easily view ed, for example , after the dock is mounted in a v ehicle.
2 - 8 Rebooting the Thor VM2 W armboot A warmboot reboots the Thor VM 2 with out erasing an y registr y data. Conf iguration settings and data in RAM are pre- ser v ed during a warmb oot. Network sessions are lost and any data in running applications that has not been previ- ously sav ed may be lost.
2 - 9 Setup T erminal Em ulation Parameter s Note: The instructions b elow are for Honeywell RFTerm. If a differ ent terminal emulation softwa re is installed on your Thor VM2 refer to the documentati on for that software.

3 - 1 3 Har d ware Overview System Har dware 802.11a/b/gWireless Client The Thor VM2 has an 802 .11a/b/g network ca rd that suppor ts dive rsity with two inte r nal or external antennas. P ower man- agement for the network card i s configured with the Summit Client Utility (page 8-1).
3 - 2 A udio Interface Speakers are located on the bottom front of the Thor VM2. A headset adapter cab le provides a connection for headset operation. When a headset is plugged into the adapter cable , the main speakers are disabled. A microphone is located at the upper righ t of the Thor VM 2 display , near the Thor VM2 emblem.
3 - 3 (page 4-52 ). Uninterruptible P ower Supply The Thor VM2 contains an inter nal UPS batter y . The UPS batter y is automatically charged when the Thor VM2 is placed in a po wered dock, pro vided the safe charging tem- perature conditio ns below are met.
3 - 4 Fuse P ower Management Modes The Thor VM2 suppor ts the standard Microsoft Windows CE power management modes: On (D0), Backlight Off (D1), Dis- play Off (D2) and Suspend (D3).
3 - 5 Primary Ev ents The Primar y Events described bel o w are the default behavior . Primar y ev e nts can be modified using the LXEP ower- MgrPrimar yEv ents API. Please refer to the CE API Programming Guide for API details . User Primar y Events A User Primar y Ev ent transitions the Thor VM2 to D0 (On) mode.
3 - 6 P ower Contr ols Po w e r S w i t c h P ower Button P ower Configuration Mode The P ower Configuration Mode control panel is used to select desired po wer configuration behavior . Please refer to the Power Configuration Mode (page 5-80) control panel for complete details.
3 - 7 UPS The Thor VM2 uses th e UPS mode whenev e r e xternal pow er is not av ailable . Due to the absence of external power , much shorter default power management timeouts are used. External Connectors P ower the Thor VM2 off before attaching a cab le to any por t (seria l, USB , Audio/CAN, etc.
3 - 8 CANbus / A udio Connector P ower Suppl y Connector The CANbus/A udio connector is a D-15 male connector located on the back of the Quick Mount Smar t Dock. The connector suppor ts a headset adapter cable or a CANbus cab le. The Thor VM2 does not suppor t connecting audi o and CANbus simultaneously .
3 - 9 Antenna Connections External Antenna Connector Internal 802.11 Antenna If the intern al 802.11 antenna option is ordered, antennas are mounted inside t he Th or VM2.
3 - 10 Keyb o ard O pt io n s Integrated Ke ypad The integrated ke ypad contains five programmab le keys , a blue modifier ke y and an orange modifier k ey . The P1 though P5 k eys are user programmab le. • When used with no modifier key, P1 thro ugh P5 can be configured for a user programmable function.
3 - 11 The ke yboard ke ys are backlit. The keyboard bac klight is man ually controlled usin g the bac klight ke y in the upper right hand corne r of the k eyboard. Pressing the bac kl ight k ey cycl es the ke yboard backlight thro ugh the levels of bac klight intensity: Off, Lo w intensity , Medium in tensity , Ma ximum intensity , Off, etc.
3 - 12 UPS Status LED The color of the UPS LED identifies the charge lev el, while the behavior of the LED identifies the charging state. 3 - 13 Connection LEDs WW AN LED Wi-Fi LED Bluetooth LED The Bluetooth LED blinks once e ver y 6 seconds when the Blueto oth client is paired b ut not connected. It blinks once f or a very shor t time e ver y 2 seconds when paired and connected. It blinks e v er y second when in discovery .
3 - 14 Ke yboard LEDs The ke yboard LEDs are located near the speci fied ke y . Blue LED Orange LED Pr ogrammable LED The Programmable LED is a vailable f or user applications. The LED def aults to Off unless activated by user applica- tion. The LED behavior is controlled by the NLedDr iverSetDe vice API.

4 - 17 4 V ehicle Mounting and Accessory Installation Intr oduction The Thor VM2 is design ed to be mounted to a Quick Mount Smar t Dock in a v ehicle with ei ther a RAM mount or U Bracket sys- tem. A pow er cable is provided with the Thor VM2 dock . An optional USB ke yboard and ke yboard mount is availab le.
4 - 18 Maintenance - V ehic le Mounted De vices Check the v ehicle mounting hardware frequently and re-tighten if ne cessary . If the vehicle mounting hardware and connections become brok en, lo os e or crac ked, the assemb ly must be taken out of service and replaced.
4 - 19 Dock I/O Pin Cover . P adlock Laptop Security Cable The dock contains a tethered I/O Pin Cov er to protect the I/O pins on the dock when a Thor VM2 is not mounted in the dock. • When the Thor VM2 is not installed in the dock, use the I/O Pin Cover to protect the pins on the dock as shown.
4 - 20 Install RAM Mount Before installation begins, verify you ha ve the applicable v e hicle mounting brack et assembly components necessar y , as shown in the follo wing figures. Components - RAM Mounting Kits A Thor VM1 mounting kit can be used when an external ke yboard is not installed and include s the par ts on this page.
4 - 21 Additionally , the kits f or the Thor VM2 with an integrated k eyboard include: • RAM Plate mount with RAM Ball (Size D) with Hardware (cone w ashers and nuts) to attach Ball to Plate Thor VM.
4 - 22 Procedure - RAM Mount Assemb ly Equipment Needed: Sockets, scre wdriver and a T orque wrench capa b le of measuring to 50 inch pounds (5.64±.56 N/m). Note: Torquing tool is n ot supplied by Honeyw ell. Tools ne ede d to attach the RAM Clamp Mount to the vehicle are not supplied by Honeywell.

4 - 25 Step 2 – Attach RAM Mount Ball to the Thor VM2 Quic k Mount Smart Dock 1. Turn the Thor VM2 off befor e attaching the RAM mount ball. 2. Place the Th or VM2 face down on a stable surface.
4 - 26 Step 3 – Attach Thor VM2 Ass embl y to RAM Mount 1. Slip the Size D RAM arm over th e ball on the vehicle RAM mount (RAM Ball mount shown). 2. Insert the ball on the dock into the RAM arm and tighten the knob on the RAM arm using the supplied RAM wrench.
4 - 27 Step 5 – Attach K eyboa rd to Mounting Plate Note: This step is only for a Thor VM 2 with the optional external keyboard. If using the optional inte g rated ke yboard mount, attach the keyboard to ke yboard mounting plate, using four #8 screws , flat washers and lock w ashers.
4 - 28 Step 6 – Attach K eyboa rd Assemb ly to Thor VM2 Assemb ly Note: This step is only for a Thor VM 2 with the optional external keyboard. 1. Slip the Size C RAM arm over th e bal l on the Thor VM2 Keyboard Bracket. 2. Slip the ball on the Keyboard Mounting Plat e into the other end of the Size C RAM arm.
4 - 29 Install U Bracket Mount Note: This mounting system is designed for use with a Thor VM2 without an external keyboard. Before installation begins, verify you ha ve the applicable v e hicle mounting brack et assembly components necessar y , as shown in the follo wing figures.
4 - 30 Mounting P ositions The adapter brack et can be mounted in a high or low pos ition, depending on vie wing position, a s shown below . Additionally , the slotted U brac ket allo ws the Thor VM2 to be mounted verticall y or tilted f orward or backw ard for best viewing angle.

Step 2 - Remo ve RAM Ball If the Thor VM2 Quick Mount Smart Dock has a RAM ball at tached, the RAM ball must be remov ed fro m the doc k to use the U Brack et mount. Remov e the RAM ball. The hardware used to attach the RA M ball to the dock is not reused f or the U brack et mount.
4 - 32 Connect Cables There are many cables a v ailable f or the Thor VM2 including power cab les, and data/ communication cablesThor VM2. Strain Relief Cable Clamps Equipment Required: Phi llips scre wdriver (not supplied by Honeywell) There are five strain relief cable clamps se cured to the Thor VM2 Quick Mount Smart Dock.
4 - 33 Connect P ower P ower options include: • 12-48 VDC Vehicles (10-60 VDC Direct Connection) (see page 4-34) - Direct conne ction to vehicle power. • 60-144 VDC Vehicles (50-150 VDC Power Supply, Screws on Side of Lid) (see page 4-39) - Requires the use of a DC/ DC power supply.
4 - 34 12-48 VDC V ehicles (10-60 VDC Direct Connection) P ower Cable Identification The DC power cab le (included with the doc k) is one of the two styles below: Note: Correct electrical polarity is req uired for safe and pr oper i nstallation. See the figure s below for additional w ire color-coding specifics.

4 - 38 Manual Contr ol Wiring Diagram Ignition wire must be left unconnected an d AC / D C pow er mode must be selected on the Power Configuration Mode (page 5-80) control panel. CAUTION For battery powered vehicles: • Red wire is connected to battery positive.
4 - 39 60-144 VDC V ehicle s (50-150 VDC P ower Supply , Screws on Side o f Lid) This option requires DC/DC external power supply Honeywell P ar t no. 9000313PWRSPL Y . If the DC/DC power supply does not hav e screws in the side of the lid , see 60-144 VDC Vehicle s (50-150 VDC Power Supply, Screws on Top of Lid) (page 4-4 3).
4 - 40 P ower Cable Identification The DC power cab le (included with the dock) is one of the two styles below: Note: Correct electrical polarity is required for safe and proper installati on. See Wiring Di agram (page 4-42) for additional wire color-coding spe cifics.
4 - 41 6. Connect the ground (green) wire from the Thor VM2 to the GND terminal on the input side of th e DC/DC power supply . 7. Route the wirin g from the DC/DC power supply to the vehicle’s electrical system. Do not connect to vehicle power at this time .
4 - 42 Wiring Diagram CAUTION For battery powered vehicles: GND must be connected to the vehicle chassis ground. For internal combustion engine powered vehicles: GND is connected to th e vehicle chassis ground, whi ch can also be battery negative.
4 - 43 60-144 VDC V ehicle s (50-150 VDC P ower Supply , Screws on T op of Lid) This option requires DC/DC power supply Honeyw ell P ar t no . VX89303PWRSPL Y, sho wn below . If the DC/DC power supply does no t ha ve screws in the top of the lid, see 60-144 VDC Vehicles (50-150 VDC Power Supply, Screws on Side of Lid) (page 4-39).
4 - 44 P ower Cable Identification The DC power cab le (included with the dock) is one of the two styles below: Note: Correct electrical polarity is required for safe and proper installati on. See Wiring Di agram (page 4-46) for additional wire color-coding spe cifics.
4 - 45 6. Route the wirin g from the DC/DC power supply to the vehicle’s electrical system. Do not connect to vehicle power at this time . 7. Strip the wire ends and con nect to the input side of the DC/DC power supply. 8. Use looms and wire ties to secure all wiring as shown.
4 - 46 Wiring Diagram CAUTION For battery powered vehicles: must be connected to th e v ehicle chassis ground. For internal comb ustion engine powered vehic les: is connected to the vehicle chassis ground, which can also be battery negative.
4 - 47 VX6 / VX7 Adapter Cable An adapter cable is av ai lab le to attach the Thor VM2 to a v ehicle previously equipped with a VX6/VX7 DC power cable . The adapter cable has a 5-pin connector to match with the VX6/VX7 power supply cable on one end and a 6-pin con- nector to match to the Thor VM2 on the other end.
4 - 48 Thor VX8 / Thor VX9 Adapter Cable An adapter cable is av ai lab le to attach the Thor VM2 to a v ehicle previously equipped with a VX8/VX9 DC power cable . The adapter cable has a 6-pin connector to match the VX8 /XVX9 power supply cab le on one end and a 6-pin connec- tor to m atch the Tho r VM2 on t he other end.
4 - 49 Screen Blanking Prerequisite: The steps outline d in either 12-48 VDC Vehicles (10-60 VDC Direct Connection) (page 4-34), 60-144 VDC Vehicles (50-150 VDC Power Suppl y, Screws on Side of Lid) (page 4-39) or 60-144 VDC Vehicles (50-150 VDC Power Supply, Screws on Top of Lid) (p age 4-43) hav e been complete d.
4 - 50 User-Supplie d Cable A user-supplied cable can be used as well. Pins 7 and 8 must be connected as detaile d below . No other pins are to be connected . The user-supplied cable is installed as follo ws: 1. Connect the wire from Pi n 8 of the cable to the switched side of the Screen Blanking Box or to a user-sup- plied switch.
4 - 51 Note: The black and gray wire col ors in the illustration only a pply to the optional Honeywell Screen Blanking Box Cable, VM1080CABLE. The wire colors ma y be different in a user-suppli ed cable.
4 - 52 External A C/DC P ower Supply The optional external AC/DC power supply is f or use in environments, such as an office, where DC pow er is not av a il- able . Note: The Honeywell-approved AC/DC Power Supply and Adap ter Cable are only intended for use in a 25ºC (77ºF) maximum ambient temperature en vironment.
4 - 53 Connect USB Ke yboard The e xter nal ke yboard (par t number 164288-00 01 ) is a USB k eyboard. The ke yboard has a D9 connector which attaches to the USB por t on the Thor VM2 Quick Mount Smar t Dock. 1. Seat the keyboard cabl e connector over the USB connector on the Thor VM 2 Quick Mount Smart Dock.
4 - 54 Connect USB Client See USB Connector (page 10-5) for connector pinouts. 1. Seat the D9 connector fi rmly over the USB Connector on the Quick Mount Smart Dock. 2. Tighten the thumbscrews in a clockwise direction. Do not over tighten. 3. The USB client connector provides a cli ent connection, such as for ActiveSync to a PC.
4 - 55 Connect Headset Cable The CANbus/A udio con nector suppor ts a headset adapter cable or a CANbus cab le. The Thor VM2 does not suppor t con- necting audio and CANb us simultaneously . See CANbus / Audio Connector (page 10-6) for connector pinouts.
4 - 56 1. Do not twist the microphone boo m when adjusting the mi crophone. The microphone should be adjusted to be about two finger width s from your mouth. 2. Ma ke sure the microphone is pointed at yo ur mouth. Note the small “Talk” labe l near the mouthpiece.
4 - 57 Install Remote Antenna Remote antennas are av ailable f or th e 802.11 WLAN radio , the WW AN radio and the GPS. 802.11 Remote Mount Antenna Components and Mounting Diagram The Remote Antenna Installatio n Kit consists of two brac kets (base plate and r ight angle), cable , and antenna.
4 - 58 T ypical Installation Mounting Instructions 1. Attach an d secure the desired mounting bracket to th e highest point on the safety cage, fo llowing these pre- cautions: • The plate must be mou nted so the antenna is not damag ed while the vehicle or any of its parts are moving.
4 - 59 W AN Remote Mount Antenna The W AN remote mount antenna can be ei ther a magnetic mount or an adhesive mount antenna. The Remote Antenna Installati on Kit consists of the W AN antenna and an extension cable . The remote antenna is mounted on the top of a forklift, truck or other v ehicle and cab led to the Thor VM2 inside the vehicle.
4 - 60 Apply T ouc h Screen Protective Film The optional Thor VM2 touch screen protective film is shipped in packs of 10. The prot ectiv e film is fle xible and treated with an anti-glare coating on the outer surface . Installation 1. Make sure the touch screen is cl ean and dry before installa tion.
4 - 61 Disconnect UPS Battery Equipment Required The f ollowing equipment is user-supplied: • Torquing tool capable of measuring inch pounds • #2 Phillips screwdriver bit Disconnect Procedure CAUTION - The UPS battery must be discon nected before you ship the Thor VM2 or Replace Front Pane l (pag e 4-64) .

5 - 1 5 Software Intr oduction There are se ver al different aspects to the se tup , configuration an d operat ion of the Thor VM2. Many of the setup and configu ra - tion settings are dependent upo n the optional f eatures such as hardware and software installed on the unit.
5 - 2 • To select a connected set of items, press t he Shift key, then touch the first item in the series. Touch the last item in the series. Press the Shift key again to terminate the selectio n mode.
5 - 3 A valanc he The W av elink A v alanche Enabler installation file is lo aded on th e Thor VM2; howe ve r , the de vice is not configured to launch the installation file automatical ly . The installation applic ation must be run ma nually the first time Av alanche is used.
5 - 4 1. The launch utility opens the regi stry database and reads the list of CAB files to a uto-launch. 2. First it looks for FileName to see if the C AB file is present.
5 - 5 The Thor VM2 includes a Save User Def aults option in the R egistry (page 5-89) control panel. This is the p ref erred method f or saving a bac kup of the registr y . Sa ve the registr y file to the System folder on the Thor VM 2 (persistent storage) or co p y the file to a PC.
5 - 6 Ta s k b a r The nu mber and type of icons displa yed are base d on the de vice type, installed options and co nfiguration of the Thor VM2. Displays web pages from the Internet/intranet. Used for accessing the Summit Client Utility (page 8-1). This utility co nfigures the Wi-Fi connection.
5 - 7 My Device Folder s W avelink A valanc he Enabler (Optional) Note: If the user is NOT using Wavelink Avalanch e to manage their mobil e device, the Enabler should not be installed on the mobile device(s). 5 - 20 Setup a New De vice Devices with the AppLock f eature are shipped to boot in Administration mode with no default pass word, thus when the Thor VM2 is first booted, the user has ful l access to the de vice and no password prompt is display ed.
5 - 21 End User Mode End-user mode locks the end-user into the configured application or applicati ons. The end user can still reboot and respond to dialog box es. Each application is automatically launched and r uns in full screen mode when the device boots up .
5 - 22 Using a Stylus T ap When the mobile de vice enters end-user mode, a Sw itchpad icon (it looks like three tiny windows one abov e the other) is display ed in the lower right cor ner of the d ispla y . The Switch pad is alw ays visible on top of the application in f ocus.
5 - 23 Application Use the Application tab options to select the appl ications to launch when the device boots up in End-user Mode. If no application is specified when the Ad ministrator Control P anel is closed, the mobile de vice reb oots into Administra- tor mode.

5 - 25 Retries Def ault is 0 tries. Retries is the number of times AppLock will try to re-launch the application. The retr y count is reset after an application is successfully launched and controlled by AppLock. V alid v alues are between 0 (no tries) and 99 tri es or -1 f or infinite.
5 - 26 If the standard Inter net Explorer that is shipped with t he mobile device is desired, it should be treated like an y other application. This means that IEXPLORER.EXE should be specified in the Applic ation text bo x and the Inter- net application should be entered in the command line.

5 - 32 Bluetooth Device Pr oper ties Data on the Bluetooth Proper ties pane l cannot be changed by the user . The data display ed is the result of the device Query performed d uring the Discovery proce ss. The Status dialog box reflects the curr ent state of the highlighted device .

6 - 2 Cable f or USB Ac tiveSync Connection: VM1052CABLE - Thor VM2 Dongle cable provides USB type A connector . • D9 connector connects to the USB port on the Thor VM2 dock. • The USB type A client connector on cable c onnects to a USB po rt on a PC or laptop.
6 - 3 Reset and Loss of Host Re-connection ActiveSync assigns a par tnership between a Thor VM2 (the client) a nd a host computer. A par tnership is defined by two objects – a unique computer name and a random numb er generated when the par tnership is firs t created.
6 - 4 Installation 1. Connect the Thor VM2 to the PC using the proper connection cable. 2. If using ActiveSync, select Explore . 3. If using Windows Mobile Device Center, se lect File Management > Browse th e content s of your device . 4. An explorer window is di splayed for the Thor VM2.
6 - 5 6. Click th e OK button to dismiss the About CERDisp dialog box (either on the Thor VM2 desktop or n the HSM Connect window on the PC desktop). 7 - 2 Stop the Enabler Service T o stop the Enabler from monitoring for upd ates from the Mobility Center Console: 1. Open the Enabler Settings Panels by tappi n g the Enabler icon on the Thor VM2 desktop. 2. Select File > Settings . 3. Select the Preferences tab.

Preparing a Device f or Remote Manag ement T wo additional utilities are necessar y for remote management. •T h e Remote Management Utility (RMU) must be installed on all mobile devices first – then you can control mobile device reboot, storage RAM adjustment, real-time upd ates and Avalanche Enabler pr operties.
