69-0419—2 THE SOLID ST A TE PERFORMANCE INDICA TOR This air cleaner is equipped with a special solid state circuit that operates the optional W8600E Solid State Performance Indicator (see photo). The W8600E Indicator is designed to be mounted next to your thermostat, and to monitor the air cleaner performance.
69-0419—2 OPERA TING Y OUR ELECTRONIC AIR CLEANER Set the ON-OFF switch to ON. The air cleaner will now operate whene ver your furnace/air conditioning system fan oper ates. 69-0419—2 ONE-CELL MODEL SHOWN. If you do not w ant the air cleaner to run, set the ON-OFF switch to OFF to turn off the air cleaner. Y our fur nace and air conditioner will still operate normally , b ut without the added benefit of air cleaning. Normally , this s witch should be ON at all times.
69-0419—2 GETTING THE MOST FROM Y OUR AIR CLEANER For g reatest efficiency , the air cleaner should run all the time. T o do this, set the f an switch on your thermostat to ON, and make sure the air cleaner is switched on. The f an and air cleaner will run ev en when the fur nace or air conditioner is off.
69-0419—2 CLEANING THE CELL(S) AND PREFIL TER T o ensure optim um perf ormance from the air cleaner , the cell(s) and prefilter m ust be cleaned regular ly—e v er y one to six months. W ashing frequency will vary depending on the number of f amily members, pets, activities (such as cooking, woodw or king, etc.
69-0419—2 Removing the electronic cell(s) and prefilter TURN LATCH M7814 F52 ACCESS DOOR STEP 1 Open the door by turning the two door latches. A B SPRING CLIP PREFILTER SCREEN M7812 STEP 2 The prefilter is held in place by a spring clip and a U-shaped channel.
69-0419—2 STEP 3 The electronic cell(s) are held in the air cleaner by a latch at the top , and metal hooks on the bottom. Push the cell inward to release the latch and rotate the latch aw ay from the cell. See photo . STEP 4 Lift the cell and tip it slightly to release it from the cell hooks.
69-0419—2 IMPORT ANT • Check y our dishwasher owner's manual. Some manuf acturers do not recommend washing electronic cell(s) in their dishwashers . • If the dishwasher has upper and low er ar ms, position the cell(s) carefully to allow good water circulation.
69-0419—2 CA UTION Hazardous c hemical. Can cause personal injury . • Do not splash the detergent solution in ey es. W ear r ubber glo ves to a void prolonged de- tergent contact with skin. • K eep detergent and solution out of reach of children.
69-0419—2 STEP 5 Rinse the cell(s) and prefilter with a hard spra y of very hot water; rinse the tub clean, then fill the tub with clean hot water and soak f or 5 to 15 minutes. Rinse until the w ater draining from the cell(s) and prefilter no longer feels slippery .
69-0419—2 STEP 2 It is v er y impor tant that the electronic cell(s) be properly replaced: a. Electrical contact board must face the po wer supply contacts. b . Airflow arro ws on the cell(s) must point into the air duct. c. Hook the cell(s) on the metal hooks and rotate into the air cleaner .
69-0419—2 STEP 3 Slide the prefilter into the U-shaped channel and push the other end past the spring clip. B SPRING CLIP M7813 A PREFILTER SCREEN INSERT TOP OF SCREEN INTO U-SHAPED CHANNEL 13.
69-0419—2 STEP 4 Close the door and f asten it with the two door latches. TURN LATCH M7814 F52 ACCESS DOOR STEP 5 T urn on system fan. If the cell(s) and prefilter are wet, the neon light ma y not come on and you ma y hear arcing. If the arcing is annoying, simply turn off the air cleaner for 2 to 3 hours or until the cell(s) are dry .
69-0419—2 HO W ELECTRONIC AIR CLEANING WORKS The par ticles remov ed by the electronic air cleaner tend to be very small—less than ten microns. But what is a 10 micron particle? The ey e of an aver age sized sewing needle has a diameter of about 750 microns, and the dot in the “i” in the w ord micron is about 400 microns.
69-0419—2 First, large par ticles (lint, hair) are caught b y the prefilter . Then, as the dir ty air passes through the intense high voltage electric field surrounding the ionizer wires , all par ticles, e ven the smallest par ticles do wn to 0.5 microns, are given an electric charge.
69-0419—2 The air cleaner vs. the standard furnace filter The regular fur nace filter collects mainly large , visible particles that reach the filter. Its main pur pose is to protect the furnace and air conditioner blo wer . The electronic air cleaner collects these large par ticles, plus man y of the smaller , mostly invisib le par ticles.
69-0419—2 Air ionizers ha ve been marketed with claims about purifying the air and promising medical benefits. It should be noted that supporting tests, if a vailable , are controversial and incomplete. Air ionizers can generate a bit of oz one, and can generate some ions (bits of material carrying some electr icity).
69-0419—2 If desired, the ozone generated b y the air cleaner can be reduced by asking y our dealer to adjust the air cleaner power supply to reduce ozone production. This adjustment will reduce ozone production about 20 to 25 percent, but will also reduce air cleaning efficiency about 7 to 10 percent.
69-0419—2 If your air cleaner is equipped with the optional W8600E Solid State P erformance Indicator , the W ASH and CHECK LEDs on the W8600E will remind you that cell and prefilter w ashing is past due and tell you when the system is not operating properly .
69-0419—2 1. Make sure the furnace or air conditioner blo wer is r unning. 2. On models without the Solid State P erformance Indicator , if the electronic cells are wet, check again in 2 to 3 hours . 3. Make sure the appropriate fuse or circuit breaker is ok.
