4 SAFETY State and Local Requirements Your saw is equipped with a temperature limiting muffler and spark arresting screen which meets the requirements of SAE Recommended Practice J335 and Cali- fornia Codes 4442 and 4443.
5 SAFETY Precautions Against Kickback Kickback is a dangerous reaction that can lead to serious injury. Do not rely only on the safety devices provided with your saw. As a chain saw user, you must take special safety precautions to help keep your cutting jobs free from accident or injury.
6 SAFETY • With a basic understanding of kick- back, you can reduce or eliminate the element of surprise. Sudden surprise contributes to accidents. • Keep a good firm grip on the saw with both hands when the engine is run- ning.
7 • Always hold the chain saw with both hands when the engine is running. Use a firm grip with thumbs and fingers encircling the chain saw handles. • Never operate a chain saw when you are fatigued. • Keep all parts of your body away from the saw chain when the engine is running.
8 SAFETY • Never let anyone use your chain saw who has not received adequate in- structions in its proper use. This applies to rentals as well as privately owned saws. Keep the handles dry, clean, and free of oil or fuel mixture. • Before you start the engine, make sure the saw chain is not contacting any object.
9 A B SAFETY Kickback ROTATIONAL KICKBACK ( A ) occurs when the moving chain contacts an object at the Kickback Danger Zone ( B ) of the guide bar zone. The result is a lightning fast, reverse reaction which kicks the guide bar up and back towards the operator.

11 A SAFETY • Never start cutting until you have a clear work area, secure footing, and a planned retreat path from the falling tree. • Use extreme caution when cutting small size brush and saplings, be- cause slender material may catch the saw chain and be whipped toward you or pull you off balance.
12 SAFETY Low Kickback Saw Chain The rakers (depth gauges) ahead of each cutter can minimize the force of a kick- back reaction by preventing the cutters from digging in too deeply at the kick- back zone. Only use replacement chain that is equivalent to original chain or has been certified as low kickback chain per ANSI B175.
13 SAFETY Chain Brake Chain brakes are designed to rapidly stop the chain from rotating. When the chain brake lever / hand guard is pushed toward the bar, the chain should stop immedi- ately. A chain brake does not prevent kickback. A ) RUN POSITION B ) BRAKE POSITION Chain brake should be cleaned and tested daily.

16 OPERATION Chain Oil System 1. Use HOMELITE Bar and Chain Oil. It is designed for chains and chain oilers and is formulated to perform over a wide temperature range with no dilution required. NOTE: Do not use dirty, used or otherwise contaminated oils.
17 Place the chain saw on level ground and ensure that no objects or ob- structions are in immediate vicin- ity which could come in contact with the bar and chain. Hold the front handle firmly with the left hand and put your right foot onto the base of the rear handle, see Illustration ( A ).
18 4. Pull CHOKE lever all the way OUT. This sets throttle. Pull the choke lever ( E ) out to the fully extended posi- tion ( / Full Choke). The partial throttle position is au- tomatically set when the choke lever is set at full choke. 5. COLD ONLY - Pull STARTER until engine attempts to start.
19 OPERATION 6. Push CHOKE lever all the way IN. Push the choke lever ( E ) com- pletely in to the engine run position, as shown in Illustra- tion ( F ). 7. Pull STARTER until engine runs. Pull the starter until the engine runs, as shown in Illustration ( G ).
20 OPERATION Now you are ready to pick up the saw. Use the proper grip for both handles as illustrated in Operation-Preparation for Cutting Section. NOTE - STARTING WARM ENGINE: Follow starting instructions (steps 1-9), but do not attempt to start in the full choke position (skip step 5).

22 OPERATION Proper Cutting Stance • Weight should be balanced with both feet on solid ground. • Keep left arm with elbow locked in a "straight arm" position ( D ) to with- stand any kickback force. See Illus- tration ( E ). • Your body should always be to the left of the chain line ( F ).
23 • Always cut with both feet on solid ground to prevent being pulled off balance. • Do not cut above chest height, as a saw held higher is difficult to control against kickback forces. • Do not fell trees near electrical wires or buildings. Leave this operation for professionals.
24 STOP OPERATION Carburetor Adjustment Before adjusting the carburetor, clean the air filter ( A ), see Maintenance-Air Filter Section. Also clean the starter cover vents as shown in Illustration ( B ). Allow the engine to warm up prior to carburetor adjustment.
25 STOP W ARNING Weather conditions and altitude may affect carburetion. Do not allow bystanders close to the chain saw while adjusting the carbu- retor.
26 OPERATION Chain Brake Operation Refer to Safety-Chain Brake Section before use. The chain brake Run Position ( A ) and Brake Position ( B ) are illustrated below. The chain brake operating condition should be checked prior to each use as follows: 1.
27 W ARNING If chain brake does not stop the chain immediately, take the saw to a Homelite Servicing Dealer for repair prior to use. 28 B B OPERATION 1. Pick your escape route (or routes in case the intended route is blocked). Clear the immediate area around the tree, and make sure there are no obstructions in your planned path of retreat. Clear path of safe retreat ( A ) approximately 135° from planned line of fall ( B ).
29 C E F G OPERATION 5. Never cut through to the notch. Al- ways leave a band of wood between the notch and back cut (approxi- mately 2 inches (5 cm) or 1/10 the diameter of the tree).
30 Bucking Bucking is the term used for cutting a fallen tree to the desired log length. • Cut only one log at a time. • Support small logs on a saw horse or another log while bucking. • Keep a clear cutting area. Make sure that no objects can contact the guide bar nose and chain during cutting, this can cause kickback ( D ).
31 OPERATION • During bucking operations always stand on the uphill side so that the cut-off section of the log can not roll over you. • Sometimes it is impossible to avoid pinching (with just standard cutting techniques) or difficult to predict which way a log will settle when cut.
32 Give special attention to logs under stress to prevent the bar and chain from pinching. Types of Cutting Used Overbucking Begin on the top side of the log with the bottom of the saw against the log; exert light pressure downward. Note that the saw will tend to pull away from you.
33 A W ARNING Never climb into a tree to limb or prune. Do not stand on ladders, platforms, a log or in any position which can cause you to lose your balance or control of the saw. OPERATION Limbing and Pruning • Work slowly, keeping both hands on the saw with a firm grip.
34 OPERATION • When pruning trees it is important not to make the flush cut next to the main limb or trunk until you have cut off the limb further out to reduce the weight. This prevents stripping the bark from the main member. Underbuck the branch 1/3 through for your first cut ( A ), your second cut ( B ) should overbuck to drop the branch off.
35 D OPERATION Springpoles A springpole ( D ) is any log, branch, rooted stump, or sapling which is bent under tension by other wood so that it springs back if the wood holding it is cut or removed.

41 MAINTENANCE 6. Place the chain drive links ( I ) into the bar groove ( J ) as shown in illustration ( K ). Position the chain so there is a loop at the back of the bar as shown in illustration ( K ). Hold chain in posi- tion on the bar and place the loop around the sprocket ( L ) as shown in illustration ( M ).
42 MAINTENANCE 7. Replace the outer guide bar plate ( E ) assuring that the bar pin groove is at the bottom, with the upper and lower edges angled away from the guide bar as shown in illustration. 8. Replace the clutch cover ( D ) and bar mounting nuts.
43 S T MAINTENANCE 1 1 . Hold the tip of the guide bar up and tighten the bar mounting nuts se- curely as shown in illustration ( S ). 1 2 . Chain is correctly tensioned when there is no sag on the underside of the guide bar, the chain is snug, but it can be turned by hand without binding, see illustration ( T ).
44 MAINTENANCE 1. Stop the engine before setting the chain tension. Make sure the guide bar nuts are loosened to finger tight, turn the chain tensioner clockwise to tension the chain.
45 A MAINTENANCE Chain Maintenance CAUTION: Check that the switch is in the stop “ / O ” position before you do any work on the saw. Use only low-kickback chain on this saw. This fast-cutting chain will provide kickback reduction when properly main- tained.
46 MAINTENANCE How to Sharpen the Cutters Be careful to file all cutters to the specified angles and to the same length, as fast cutting can be obtained only when all cutters are uniform.
47 W ARNING Improper chain sharpening increases the potential of kickback. Failure to replace or repair damaged chain can cause serious injury. The saw chain is very sharp, always wear protective gloves when perform- ing maintenance to the chain.

49 Guide Bar Maintenance Every week of use, reverse the guide bar on the saw to distribute the wear for maximum bar life. See Illustration ( S ). The bar should be cleaned every day of use and checked for wear and damage. Feathering or burring of the bar rails is a normal process of bar wear.
50 MAINTENANCE A bar with any of the following faults should be replaced. • Wear inside the bar rails which per- mits the chain to lay over sideways. • Bent guide bar. • Cracked or broken rails. • Spread rails. In addition, guide bars with a sprocket at their tip must be lubricated weekly with a grease syringe to extend the guide bar life.
51 MAINTENANCE 1. In addition to preventing chain con- tact with solid objects at the nose of the bar, the SAFE-T-TIP® also helps keep the chain away from abrasive surfaces such as the ground. Keep it on the right hand side of the bar, where it will be between the chain and the ground during flush with ground cutting.

56 MAINTENANCE Spark Arresting Muffler The muffler ( A ) is equipped with a spark arrester screen ( B ). A faulty spark ar- rester screen can create a fire hazard. Through normal use the screen can be- come dirty and should be inspected weekly and cleaned as required.
57 MAINTENANCE Chain Brake Remove the clutch cover and clean the chain brake components. Check wear on the brake band ( H ) and replace if worn or deformed. The band thickness should not be less than 0.024" (.60mm), or worn halfway through. Always keep the chain brake mecha- nism clean and lightly lubricate the link- age ( I ).
