7 Ne v er carr y children, e v en if mow er is disengaged. Remov e objects that could be thro wn by the b lade . Go up and down slopes , not across. Do not operate on slopes that e xceed 10 ° . • If machine stops going uphill, stop blade and back do wn slowly .
8 Only allow responsib le adults who are trained and f amiliar with the instructions to operate the machine. T raining includes actual operation. Clear the area of objects such as tree branches , rocks , to ys, wire , etc., which could be pic ked up and thro wn b y the blades .
9 K eep children out of the mo wing area and under the watchful care of another responsib le adult. Be aler t and tur n off machine if children enter the area. Bef ore and when backing up , look behind and down f or small children. Ne v er carr y children, e v en if mow er is disengaged.
10 T o ensure safe and proper operation, all parts and hardware m ust be tightened securely . Use the correct tools to ensure proper tightness. T O REMO VE TRA CT OR FR OM SKID 1. Remov e all accessib le loose par ts from shipping car ton. 2. Remov e top and sides of crate .
11 CONTROLS AND FEA TURES Operator Presence System Y our tractor is equipped with an operator presence s witch. When engine is running, any attempt b y the operator to lea v e the seat, without fi rst disengaging attachment and placing the Steering Control Lev ers in neutral, will shut off the engine .
12 Neutral Lock T o star t, loc k unit in neutral b y pushing both T ra v el-Steering Control Le v ers outward – to each side – from centered (neutral) position. Straight Forward Push the T ra v el-Steering Control Le v ers SLO WL Y f orward the same distance from the centered (neutral) position.
13 Attachment Lift Le ver Lock AL W A YS engage the attachment Lift Le v er Lock when removing or ser vicing the mower dec k. Lift le v er can spring up quickly if released while mow er deck is remo v ed. Bef ore removing the mow er deck, ❶ low er the attachment lift le v er to position 1, then ❷ latch and lock the loc k pin.
14 STARTING THE ENGINE NO TE: Bef ore star ting, read w arm and cold star ting procedures below . 1. The operator must be seated. 2. T rav el-Steering Control lev ers must be in the "NEUTRAL-LOCK" position. 3. The PT O Switch must be in the "OFF" position.
15 T O OPERATE ON HILLS • Use a slow speed bef ore star ting up or do wn hills. • A v oid stopping or changing speed on hills . • If slowing is necessary , mov e T ra vel-Steering Control Le v ers to slow er position.
16 MULCHING OPERA TION (OPTIONAL) The special mulching b lades and baf fl es will allow the grass clippings to be cut man y times to reduce their size . As the grass f alls onto the lawn,it disperses into the grass and will not be noticed. Also, the m ulched grass biodeg rades quic kly and provides n utrients for the lawn.
17 1 - Change more often when operating under a hea vy load or in high ambient temperatures . 2 - Ser vice more often when operating in dir ty or dusty conditions.
18 CHECK OPERA T OR PRESENCE SYSTEM The engine should not star t unless the PT O Switch is disengaged, and the Steering-Control Lev ers are in neutral loc k position.
19 4. Slide blade onto an unthreaded portion of the steel bolt or pin and hold the bolt or pin parallel with the ground. If blade is balanced, it should remain in a horizontal position. If either end of the blade mo v es downw ard, sharpen the heavy end until the blade is balanced.
20 5. Remov e wing nut from the Battery Rod and remov e the rod. 6. Disconnect the negativ e ( – ) cable fi rst. 7. Disconnect the positiv e cable (+) second. 8. Lift the batter y out of the unit and place batter y on a bench or other well v entilated area where an acid spill will not create damage.
21 ENGINE T o access engine: 1. Unhook Engine Cov er latch. 2. Lift rear of cov er and slide out. Set cover aside . 3. T o replace cover: Slide front of co v er into slot. 4. Inser t the back edge of cov er into its suppor t brac ket. 5. Hook Engine Cov er latch securely .
22 T O REMO VE 48" MOWER DECK 1. T ur n off engine, engage parking brake and allo w hot par ts to cool. 2. Place center deck lift handle in lo west (1) position. 3. Engage Attachment Lift Lock. Pull handle out and rotate down 90 ° . Handle will spr ing into lock ed position.
23 3. Engage Attachment Lift Lock. Pull handle out and rotate down 90 ° . Handle will spr ing into lock ed position. 4. Loosen nut on rod link at front of tractor . It is not necessar y to remov e it entirely . 5. Release rod link locking br ack ets from rod link at front of deck.
24 6. Tighten height adjuster nuts . 7. Secure height adjusters with washers and hair pins. T o Adjust 42" Deck: 1. Place mow er in the number three (3) postition. 2. Place anti-scalp rollers in highest position so they do not touch the ground during adjustment.
25 BEL TS Clutch to Dec k Belt Replacement (48" Dec k) 1. Disconnect main idler spring from bolt under frame . 2. Remov e belt from electric clutch and drive pulle y . 3. Install new belt onto driv e pulley and electric clutch, checking f or belt alignment and clearance.
26 4. Remov e the loc k nut, w asher , spring, and spacer from the ey e-bolt. Discard the lock nut and inner spacer . 5. Loosen the nut on the belt adjustment brac ket. 6. Rotate belt adjustment arm out of the way , and remov e mo wer dec k belt. 7. Match marks on mower shea v es to marks on deck to properly align b lades.
27 Clutch Shaft Belt Replacement 1. Remov e transaxle belt (see procedure abo v e). 2. Remov e clutch shaft idler spring from frame. 3. Remov e clutch shaft belt from engine shea v e. 4. Remov e clutch shaft belt from clutch shea v e. 5. Install new belt onto clutch shea v e , then engine sheav e.
28 4. Adjust the rotation of the eccentrics on one or both sides of the unit so that the steering control le v ers align in the full f orward position. 5. Tighten the eccentric ’ s bolts. 6. Reinstall the side shrouds. SEAT ADJUSTMENT Lift up and tilt seat f orward to locate seat adjustment bolts on the seat plate.
29 Prepare your tr actor f or storage at the end of the season or if the tractor will not be used f or 30 da ys or more. T RACTOR / DECK IMPORT ANT : Ne v er spra y unit with water or store unit outdoors. W ater can seep into sealed bearings, which are sealed against dir t and debr is only , causing reduced component lif e.
30 PROBLEM CA USE CORRECTION Engine will not start or loses power 1. Steering-Control Lev ers not loc k ed in neutral. 2. Attachment clutch is engaged. 3. Out of fuel. 4. Engine not "CHOKED" properly . 5. Engine fl ooded. 6. Bad spark plug.
31 Engine continues to run when operator leaves seat 1. F aulty operator-presence safety s witch. 1. Contact your Grav ely Dealer . Engine “ back fi res ” when turning engine “ OFF ” 1. Engine throttle control not set at “ SLO W ” position for 30 seconds bef ore stopping engine.
