3. Important Safety Information No safety seat can guarantee protection from injury . However , proper use of this safety seat reduces the risk of serious injury or death to your child. 3.1 About Y our Child ! THIS SAFETY SEA T IS DESIGNED for use only by children who weigh 20 lbs.
3.2 About Using this Safety Seat in Y our V ehicle ! YOUR CHILD CAN BE INJURED in a vehicle even if you are not in a crash. Common events such as sudden braking and sharp turns can injure your child if the safety seat is not properly installed or if your child is not properly secured in the safety seat.
3.3 A W arning About Air Bags ! NEVER PLACE THIS SAFETY SEA T IN A VEHICLE SEA TING LOCA TION THA T HAS AN AIR BAG. If an air bag inflates, it can hit the safety seat with great force and cause serious injury or death to your child. Refer to your vehicle owners manual for information about air bags and child safety seat installation.
3.5 About the Life and Condition of this Safety Seat ! REPLACE THE SAFETY SEAT AND BASE after an accident of any kind. An accident can cause damage to the safety seat and base that you cannot see. ! EVEN IF THE SAFETY SEA T AND BASE are not involved in an accident, stop using both and throw them away six years after the date of manufacture.
3.6 W arnings About Using the Safety Seat as a Carrier Infants can tip or slide the carrier by their movements or by pushing off other objects with their feet. If the carrier tips over , your child can suffocate. If the carrier is too upright, your infants head may drop forward and cause breathing problems.
! NEVER PLACE carrier in the top of a shopping cart. Strings and cords can cause strangulation. Keep strings and cords away from child: ! DO NOT place carrier near a window where cords from blinds or drapes can strangle a child. ! DO NOT hang strings on or over the carrier .
4. Selecting a Suitable Location for the Safety Seat 4.1 Consider These Basic Recommendations According to accident statistics, children are safer when properly restrained in rear vehicle seating positions, rather than front seating positions. Some seating positions in your vehicle may not be safe locations for this safety seat.
W e recommend that, whenever possible, you secure the safety seat in the center position of the seat directly behind the front seats Ê . W e also recommend that an adult ride in the rear seat to watch the child.
! THE VEHICLE SEA T MUST F ACE FOR W ARD. DO NOT place safety seat in a rear-facing vehicle seat Ì or a side-facing vehicle seat Í . ! ONL Y use this safety seat on vehicle seats with seat backs that lock in an upright position. Do not use seats that can fold down without having to release a lock or latch of some kind.
4.3 Be Sure Y our V ehicle Seat Belt is Safe to Use The vehicle seat belt must be designed to hold the safety seat tightly at ALL times. There are a variety of seat belt systems that are NOT safe for use with the safety seat because they will not hold the safety seat tightly at all times.
A. Seat Belt Systems that are NOT Safe for Use with the Safety Seat DO NOT use the following types of vehicle belt systems with your safety seat. They will not hold the safety seat securely in place. The metal locking clip provided with this product will NOT make any of these seat belts safe.
! DO NOT use a seat belt that is attached to the door in any way Ê . This type of belt is designed to open with the door and automatically surround the passen- ger when the door is closed. This seat belt will NOT safely restrain the safety seat. ! DO NOT use a seat belt that is anchored forward of the seat crease Ë .
B. Seat Belt Systems that are Suitable for Use with the Safety Seat The following vehicle belt systems can be used with your safety seat, IF the seat location meets all other requirements of these instructions AND THOSE IN YOUR VEHICLE OWNERS MANUAL.
! Lap/shoulder combination belt with a locking latchplate Ê . Once it is buckled, this type of belt has a latchplate that will not allow the lap portion of the belt to loosen. This seat belt does not require a locking clip. ! Lap/shoulder combination belt with a latchplate that can slide freely along the belt Ë .
5. Adjusting the Features and Components of the Safety Seat Each model of the safety seat comes with different harness and base options. Please follow the instructions that are appropriate for the model which you have purchased. Y our seat will have either a 3-point or a 5-point harness.

26 V ehicle belt path Non-adjustable Base The level indicator is attached to the side of the safety seat, and indicates whether or not the safety seat is properly reclined. The locking clip is stored on the back of the safety seat. Y ou will need to use it with certain types of vehicle seat belts.
5.3 Removing and Attaching the Safety Seat Base 1. Squeeze base release handle at back of the safety seat to release the attachment latch. Lift safety seat from base as shown Ê . 2. T o reattach seat, push it down until the safety seat clicks into base.
3. Release buttons and rotate handle until it clicks into desired position and both handle adjustment buttons pop out Ê . 4. Push on the handle to be sure it is locked firmly in position . 5.5 Attaching the Canopy The fabric canopy comes disassembled with four identical plastic supports.
2. Slide straight end of another support into the straight end of the support which has been pushed through the canopy Ì . 3. Using remaining supports, repeat steps one and two for the other canopy tunnel. The canopy will look like the picture Í . 4.
6. Inserting the Harness Straps in the Pr oper Slots The harness straps must go into the harness slots that are even with or just below your childs shoulders. T o properly adjust the harness to your child: 1. Remove safety seat from base and rotate handle down into the sitting position (page 28).
2. Place your child in the safety seat so your childs bottom rests against the back of the safety seat. See diagram #2 on page 37. Determine which pair of harness slots are even with or just below your childs shoulders. DO NOT use the upper harness slots if they are above your childs shoulders.
For the 3-Point Harness: 1. From the back of the safety seat, push a corner of the harness anchor buckle back into its harness slot. From the front of the safety seat, use the harness strap to pull the buckle through the slot Ê . 2. Insert the harness anchor buckle all the way through the appropriate slot as determined in step 2 on page 31 Ë .
4. Insert the harness strap through the appropriate slot. Thread the harness strap through the tightener exactly as shown in the picture Ì . 5. Inspect the harness straps from the front and back of the safety seat to be sure they are not twisted.
For the 5-Point Harness: 1. Lift the seat flap to access the harness adjuster button. Depress the harness adjuster button and loosen the harness Ê . 2. Behind the seat, pull the small strap down until the metal junction plate is below the plastic harness retainer .
3. Behind the seat, push both shoulder straps under the owners manual pocket and out the other side Ì . Reassemble the strap ends onto the metal junction plate.
7. Securing Y our Child in the Safety Seat/Carrier 1. Make sure that the harness straps are in the proper slots for your child according to section 6, Inserting the Harness Straps in the Proper Slots (page 30). 2. Make sure that your child is dressed in clothing which: a.
3. Move the safety seat handle to the sitting position and remove the strap from the harness clip as shown Ê . Unbuckle the harness and drape the harness straps over the back or sides of the safety seat. 4. Place your child in the safety seat so that the childs bottom rests against the back of the safety seat Ë .
For the 3-Point Harness: 6. Buckle the harness to the latch between your childs legs. Make sure that you hear a click. If the harness straps are not buckled, the safety seat provides NO protection for your child. DO NOT use the safety seat if the harness does not latch in place.
For the 5-Point Harness: 6. Insert the two buckle tongues into the harness buckle on the crotch strap. Make sure that you hear each tongue click into the buckle. If the harness straps are not buckled, the safety seat provides NO protection for your child.
For Both 3 and 5-Point Harnesses: 11 . Some infants may need extra support to keep their head and body in a comfortable position. Y our model may include our specially-designed head support.
8. Securing the Safety Seat/Base in Y our V ehicle There are many kinds of vehicles, seat belts, and occupant protection systems. As a result, it is not possible for this manual to tell you everything you need to know about putting this safety seat in your vehicle.
Preparation and Initial Safety Checks 1. Make sure vehicle is on level ground so that the level indicator , which is attached to the safety seat, can be used to properly recline the safety seat Ê .
Positioning and Securing the Safety Seat/Base 6. Remove safety seat from base regardless of whether or not you plan on using the base. Squeeze the base release handle at the back of the safety seat and lift the safety seat from the base.
8. Thread the seat belt: a. If you are using the base, follow diagram Ê . b. If you are not using the base, follow diagram Ë . 9. Buckle the seat belt. Make sure the buckle tongue goes into the correct buckle, and not the adjacent one Ì . The seat belt should not be twisted or turned.
10. Now the vehicle seat belt must be tightened. When tightening the seat belt over the safety seat, make sure there is no slack on either side of the safety seat and between the vehicle belt hooks on the safety seat. When tightening the seat belt through the base, make sure there is no slack on either side of the base and along the base belt path.
11 . T ightening a lap-only belt: ! An automatically adjusted lap belt Ê is tightened by feeding the seat belt back into its retractor while pushing down hard on the safety seat or base.

c. While still pinching the straps together, unbuckle the seat belt. Do not allow the straps to slip. d. Re-buckle the belt and pull hard on the lap belt to be sure it does not move.
Properly Reclining the Safety Seat/Base For your childs safety , it is important that your safety seat/base be properly reclined. Attached to the side of your safety seat is a level indicator to help properly recline the safety seat/base on the vehicle seat.
Adjustable Base: 14. Make sure the safety seat/base is not tilted sideways on the vehicle seat. Check the level indicator . Y ou must look straight on at the indicator . ! If the indicator shows ONL Y blue, the safety seat is properly leveled. ! If any orange is showing in the level indicator , the safety seat is either too upright or too reclined.
Non-adjustable Base: 14. Make sure the safety seat/base is not tilted sideways on the vehicle seat. Check the level indicator . Y ou must look straight on at the indicator .

Final Safety Checks 15. If your child is already in the safety seat because you have been using it as a carrier, make sure child is secured with the harness according to section 7, Securing Y our Child in the Safety Seat/Carrier (page 36).
9. Using the Safety Seat in an Airplane ! This safety seat may be installed in an airplane the same way that it is installed in an automobile. Since airlines have some restrictions about the use of safety seats, notify the airline ahead of time that you intend to bring the seat on board.
1 1. Cleaning and Maintenance ! TO REMOVE AND W ASH SAFETY SEA T P AD, see following pages. ! SAFETY SEA T MET AL AND PLASTIC P ART S may be cleaned by wiping with a mild soap and water solution . DO NOT USE BLEACH. Use of bleach may weaken plastic parts.
Models with 3-Point Harness T o wash the safety seat pad: 1. From the back of the safety seat, loosen and remove the harness strap from the harness tightener . From the front of the safety seat, pull the harness strap through the slot. 2. From the back of the safety seat, push a corner of the harness anchor buckle back into its harness slot Ê .
Models with 5-Point Harness T o wash the safety seat pad: 1. Remove the harness from the safety seat by following the instructions on page 34 for the 5-point harness. 2. Below the owners manual pocket, to the left and right, are small anchor buckles attached to the waist straps of the harness.
4. Carefully remove the seat pad. DO NOT USE SAFETY SEA T without the seat pad. 5. Machine wash on delicate cycle and drip-dry . DO NOT USE BLEACH. 6. Fit pad into position, then reverse the process above to properly reinstall the harness system.
