This means that they can be used for more than one purpose. For example, the bl ue jack on the co mputer can be a stereo in jack or a stereo o ut jack.

When you us e an IEEE 1394 or USB device for the first time, y our comp uter will prompt you to ins tall any software the device ne eds.

St riping across drive s improves overall performance, and the p arity information provides data protection. Because of the error-correction capabilitie s, if a drive fails, the data can be quic kly and automat ically fixed.

Replacing the system battery If the comp uter clock does not keep tim e or the setti ngs in the BIOS Setup utility are not save d when you turn o ff your computer , replace the system battery .

www.gatewa y.com 53 5 Remove the thumbscrew hold ing the card reader in the drive bay . 6 Slide th e drive release latc h back to release the c ard reader , then slide t he card reader out of the case. 7 Slide the new card reader into the bay from the front of the case, then sli de the drive release latch forward to lock the drive into pl ace.

www.gatewa y.com 55 4 Remove the hard drive by sliding it out of the dri ve bay . 5 Note any jumper settings on the old driv e and set the jumper on the new dr ive to be the same. If yo u are installing a new d rive, follow the manufac turer’s instructions.

www.gatewa y.com 57 3 Disconnect the fan c able from the system bo ard. The location of the fan conne ction may vary , so trace the fan cable from the fan to the s ystem board. 4 Remove the fa n mount by pressing in on the flat area (1) near the front, then rotating the fan mount (2) b ack.

www.gatewa y.com 59 3 Remove the four screws that secure the fan to the inside back of the computer , then remove the fan from inside the computer . Note the orientation of the fan and install the new fan the same way .

T o r e m o v e a c a r d ( s u c h a s a v i d e o c a r d ) f r o m t h e P C I Express slot, press the card release lever before trying to remove the card.

CHAPTER 4 : Upgrading Yo ur Compu ter 70 8 Loosen the four screws that secure the heat sink to the system board, then r emove the heat sink. (These screws cannot be co mpletely remo ved.) 9 Disconnect the p ower and dat a cables from the syste m board, noting their locations and orientation.
www.gatewa y.com 71 11 Lift the system b oard up and out of the case. 12 Align the new system board on the standoffs and secure it into the com puter case w ith the screws. 13 If your replacement sys tem board does not incl ude a processor , go to Step 14 .

Y ou can slightly seesaw a card end-to-end to help insert the card, but do not bend the card sideways. 22 Reconnect the expansion card cables using your notes from Ste p 3 .
