Diskettes are useful for storing files or transferring f iles to another computer . T o use a diskette: 1 Insert the diskette into th e disk e tt e d rive with t he label facing up.

Viruses can damage d a ta o r cause your computer to malfunction. Some viruses go undetected for a pe r iod of time because they are activated on a c ertain date.

67 www .gate wa y .com ■ Make sure that you are not using a digital, rollover , or PBX line. These lines do not work with your modem. ■ Check for line noise (scratchy , crackling, or popping sounds). Line noise is a common problem that ca n cause the modem to connect at a slower rate, abo rt downloads, or even disconnect.
68 ww w .g at eway . co m ■ If the modem shares the telephone line with anothe r device, make sure that the telephone line is not in use (for example, some one is on the telephone, or anoth er modem is in use). ■ Use the modem cable t ha t c a me with y our computer .

71 www .gate wa y .com If you have an optical mouse, clean the mouse by wiping the bottom with a clean, damp cloth. Make sure that the optical sensor is clean and fre e of debris. If you have a trackb all mouse, see “Cleaning the mouse” on page 42 .

Make sure tha t it is connected to the correct port. ■ Make sure that the p rinter is online. Many printers have an onli ne/offline button that you may need to press so the prin ter can start printing.

96 ww w .g at eway . co m Setting up a wi r ed Ethernet network W e recommend using category 5, unshielded, twisted-p a ir ca ble (approximately 1/4” in diameter with a thin outer-jacket, co ntaining eight color-coded wires) , and equipment compatible with this type of cable.
97 www .gate wa y .com In addition to a router , you need a straight-through ca ble for each computer you want to connect to the netwo rk . T o set up a network using a router: 1 Plug one end of the power adapter into th e AC connecto r on the router and the other end into a gro unded, 110V electrical o utlet.

C onfiguring your router After you have na med your computers a nd set up TCP/IP on them, you can configure your router using your W eb browser .
