13 www .gate wa y .com T o mount your server in a cabinet: 1 Remove the two screws from each ha ndle , then set the handles and screws aside. 2 Align the slots in a server rail with the studs on the side of the server , then engage the slots with the stud s and slide the rail ba ck until it stops.
14 ww w .g at eway .c om 4 Place a disk guide over the disk guide sc rew hole towards the back of the server . 5 Insert a small screw through the disk guid e , th en tighten the screw . Attach the remaining disk guide on the other side of the s e rver .
15 www .gate wa y .com 6 Attach a nut b a r to the inside of the two back cabinet posts using medium screws, but do not completely tighten th e screws (leave them loose eno ugh to allow insertion of the cabinet rail in the next s tep).
16 ww w .g at eway .c om 8 W ith the front of the server facing you, lift the server and insert it into the cabinet from the front, then pos ition the disk guides so they fit in the cabi ne t rails. ( Y our server may be differen t than the server shown in the example.
17 www .gate wa y .com Installing the bezel T o inst all the bezel: 1 W ith the server pulled out from the c abinet, align the holes in the handle with the holes in the front si d e of the server . 2 Attach the handles to the side s o f the ser ver with two mountin g screws on ea c h side.
18 ww w .g at eway .c om 7 Use a screw through each handle to secure the server to the cabinet posts. 8 Remove the bezel lock keys fro m the ins id e of the bezel, then snap on the be zel with the control panel area at t he right. 9 T o lock the bezel, insert the key into the lock and rota te i t ¼ turn clockwise.
19 www .gate wa y .com Remo ving the server from a cabinet T o remove the server from a cabinet: 1 Remove the screws through the handles t hat hold the server in the cabinet. 2 While supporting the ser ver , slide the ser ver out from the cabinet. 20 ww w .g at eway .c om Star ting y our ser v er Before you start your server for the first time: ■ Make sure that the server and monitor are plug ged into a power outlet or surge protector and that the surge protector (if you are using o ne) i s turned o n .
21 www .gate wa y .com If nothing happens when yo u press the power button: ■ Make sure that the power cable(s) is plugged in securely and that your surge protector (if you are using o ne) is plugged in and turned on. ■ Make sure that the monit o r i s connected to the server , plugged into the power outlet or surge protector , and turned on.
22 ww w .g at eway .c om T urning off your ser v er Every time you turn off your server , first sh ut down the operating system. Y ou may lose data if you do not follo w the correct procedure. T o turn off the server: 1 See the opera ting system’ s d ocumentation or online help for instructions on shutting down the opera t ing system.
23 www .gate wa y .com C onfiguring the RJ-45 serial por t The RJ-45 serial port connector can be configured to sup port either a D a ta S et Ready (DSR), or a Data Ca rrier Detect (DCD) signal. Th e default configuration fo r y o ur server supports DSR signals.

The System ID indicator is a blue LED that you can turn o n to help you locate the correct server .

41 www .gate wa y .com P re v enting static electricity discharge The components inside y our server are extremely sensitiv e to static electricity , also kn own as electrostatic discharge (E SD). Before working with server components, follow these guidelines: ■ T urn off the server , then unplug the power cords and all other cab les.
42 ww w .g at eway .c om Opening the ser v er case Because the compon ents inside yo ur s e rver are extremely sensitive to static electricity , make sure that you follow the in structions at the beginning of this c hapter to avoid static electricity damage.
43 www .gate wa y .com 6 Press and hold the panel relea se button, then slid e the top panel toward the back of the server about ½ inch. 7 Lift the top pa nel away from the server .

45 www .gate wa y .com Remo ving and installin g air duc ts and air dams Y our serv er has been engineered to provide co rrect airflow in the chassis for sufficient cooling of drives, processors, an d power supplie s. As your server configuration changes, the airflow within the chassis will need to be modified to accommodate those changes.
46 ww w .g at eway .c om 3 Lift the processor air duct from the chassis. Remo ving the pr ocessor air dam If you are addi n g a second processor to a sing le processor system, you need to remove the air dam located on the underside of the processor air d u ct.
47 www .gate wa y .com 4 T urn the proc essor air duct over , then re m o ve the air dam from the unde rsi d e of the air duct. 5 Follow the instructions in “Installing the processor air du ct” on page 48 . 6 Follow the instructions in “C losing the serv er c a se” o n page 44 .
48 ww w .g at eway .c om Installing the processor air duc t T o install the process or air duct: 1 Place the processor air duct over the processor sockets. The front edge of the a ir duct should contac t the fan module, and the top of the installed a ir duct should be flush with the top of th e fa n module.
49 www .gate wa y .com Remo ving the po wer supply air duc t Y our server is e quipped with a power supply fan module and a power supp ly air duct to direct the airflow and ensure proper cooling. T o remove the power supply air duct: 1 Follow the instruction s in “ Preventing static electricity discharge” on page 41 .
50 ww w .g at eway .c om Installing the power supply air duct T o install the power supply air duct: 1 Place the power supply air duct in to the chassis over the power supply fan module and in fr ont of the back power supply ( between the power supplies if the second p ower supply is installed).
51 www .gate wa y .com Installing and remo ving driv es Y our server’ s basic config uration include s one CD or DVD driv e and as many as thr ee SCSI hot-swap ha rd drives. An optional diskette drive can al so be add ed in place of the center hard drive.
52 ww w .g at eway .c om Installing a dis k ette in a con v er ted hard dr ive ba y If you need to install a slim-line diskette drive into your ser ver , you must in stall the diskette drive in the center hard drive bay .
53 www .gate wa y .com 6 Slide the diskette drive into the d r i v e c a rri er . The ba ck of the drive should go into the carrier first with the bottom of the drive (drivelight down) facing down.
54 ww w .g at eway .c om 9 Open the connector on the back of the disk ette dr i v e by pullin g up on the co nnecto r cover . 10 Insert one end of the 26-pin diskette drive flat flex cable into the connector , then push down on the connector c o v er to lock it into place.
55 www .gate wa y .com 15 Connect the other end of the data cable to the system board. See “Sy stem board ” on page 6 for the location of the connectors on the system board. 16 Reinstall the bezel, if required, by snapping it into place on the front of the chassis.
56 ww w .g at eway .c om 11 If you are replacing the drive, follow the instruc tions in “Insta lling a diskette in a converted hard drive bay” on page 52 . - OR - Install an empty hard drive carrier into the e m p ty hard drive bay . 12 Reinstall the bezel, if required, by snapping it into place on the front of the chassis.
57 www .gate wa y .com 5 Dis connec t the data an d powe r cab les from the i nterp oser bo ard. 6 Push in on t he blue lever at the back of the drive ca rrier to release the driv e carrier from the drive bay , then slide the drive ca rrier out through the front o f the ser ver .
58 ww w .g at eway .c om 11 Remove the two screws securing the interp o ser boa r d to th e back of the CD or DVD drive, then remove th e i nterposer board. 12 Follow the instructions in “In stalling a CD or DVD drive” on page 58 . - OR - Install a slim-l ine dr i ve bay filler panel into the empty bay .
59 www .gate wa y .com 5 Place the CD or DVD drive in the drive carrier ( in c lu d ed with y our ser ver) by al igning the two holes in the left side of the drive with the two alignment p ins in the carrier , then lowering the righ t side of the drive into the carrier until it c licks into place.

61 www .gate wa y .com 4 If you are replacing a hard drive, remove the four screws that secure the old hard drive to the drive tray , then remove the drive from the tray . - OR - If you are addin g a n e w drive, remove the four screws that secure the hard drive spacer to the drive tray , then remove the spacer from the tray .
62 ww w .g at eway .c om F illing empty drive ba ys Empty drive bays in the server must be filled by empty drive carriers or empty drive trays, as appropria t e . W ith the bezel removed , install the a ppropriate carrier , then replace the bezel by snapping it into plac e on the front of the server .
63 www .gate wa y .com During the boot process you will s ee the following message: Press <Ctrl>-<C> for BIOS Console 8 Press and hold the C TRL key , then press the C key . The RAID BIOS console will open. 9 Configure the RAID op t io ns, then exit the RAID BIOS console.
64 ww w .g at eway .c om If partitions are define d on this disk, a message warns you that data on the disk will be lost when the mirrore d volume i s crea ted. Pr ess Delete to confirm erasing data from t he disk, or press any other key to deselect the disk.

67 www .gate wa y .com ■ A maximum of four DIM Ms can be populated when all four DIMM s are dual rank (double ro w) DIMMs. Memory online sparing The chipset on the system board in your Gate way serv er supports memory online sparing, which can provide a way to prevent data loss in c ase of DIM M failu re.
68 ww w .g at eway .c om maintained as a spare, only 75% of the installed memory is usable. For example, if si x 1 GB DIM Ms are ins talled , only fo ur are ac tively u sed (the other tw o are use d as spa res), so the maximum us able memor y in t his example is 4 GB.
69 www .gate wa y .com Installing and remo ving PCI expansion car ds Remo ving and installing the PCI riser assembly T o remove and reinst all the PCI riser assembly: 1 Follow the instruction s in “ Preventing static electricity discharge” on page 41 .

A fan f ailure (predicted or current) will show up in the IMM System Event Log ( SEL ) as a “Power Un it 0x01h” failure event an d a GSM event will show up as “Power Unit Failure Detect ed.
81 www .gate wa y .com 3 Follow the instructions in “Removing the po wer supply air duct” on p age 49 . 4 Disconnect the fan cable from th e connector on the power distribution board. 5 Lift the fan from t he powe r su pply fan module assembly in the chassis.
82 ww w .g at eway .c om Installing a pr oces sor The server is compatible with Intel ® Xeon processors with an 800 MHz front side bus speed and a proce ssor speed of 2.8 MH z or faster . The ser ver automatically de tects the processors each time you turn o n the ser ver .
83 www .gate wa y .com 5 Loosen the four captive sc rews (one on each corner of the h eatsin k) . 6 Remove the heat sink. If the heatsink sticks to the processor , rotate the heatsink slig htly to lo osen i t. 7 Rotate the pro c esso r release lever a full 135° to re l ease the processor , then lift the pr ocesso r out of the s ocket.
84 ww w .g at eway .c om 8 If you are installing a second processor in y our server , follow t he instructions in “Remov in g th e processor air dam” on page 46 to remov e t he processor air dam in the processor air duct.
85 www .gate wa y .com 11 Place the heat sink over the processor , lining up the four captive screws with the four posts surrounding the processor . 12 Loosely screw in the captive screws on the corners of the heat sink, gently tightening diagonal screws (screw in one screw , then the screw located diagonally to the first screw).
86 ww w .g at eway .c om Installing an Intel Ma nagemen t Module (IMM) The optional Intel Management Module (IMM) provides enhanced levels of server funct ionality over th e standard baseb oar d management controller (BM C ) .
87 www .gate wa y .com 6 Find the IMM connector on th e left back portion of the system board. 7 Grasp the module by the edges, close to the mo unting connector , align the m odule with the IMM connector on the system board, t he n gently apply pressure to seat the module.
88 ww w .g at eway .c om Replacing a pow er supply module Y our serve r uses as many as two 520 W hot -swap pable power supply modules. If your server has both power supply modules installed, th e modules act as redundant, ho t-swappable power su pplies.
89 www .gate wa y .com 3 Fold out the handle and p ush the green locking lever to the right to release the power supply module from the chassis (front or back, w h ic h e v er is applicable). 4 Pull the power supply module straight out of the server with the handle.

M ake sure that you turn off the server , then un plug the power cord(s) and all othe r cables connected to the server .
91 www .gate wa y .com 9 Slide the power distribution bo a rd to the right to release it from the stand-offs, then lift it out of t he c h a ssi s. 10 Align the new power distributio n board with the stand-offs on the chassis, then place it on the stand-offs and slide it to th e left until it is firmly mounted.

93 www .gate wa y .com Replacing the hot-swap back plane T o replace the hot-swap backplane: 1 Follow the instruction s in “ Preventing static electricity discharge” on page 41 . M ake sure that you turn off the server , then un plug the power cord(s) and all othe r cables connected to the server .
94 ww w .g at eway .c om 7 Slide the backplane to the left until it stops. 8 Holding the backplane by the edges only , lift it f rom the chassis. 9 Place the backplane in a static-free bag to store it for future use.
95 www .gate wa y .com Replacing the CMOS battery If the server clock does not keep time or the settings in the BIOS Setup utility are not saved when you turn off the server , replace the CMOS batter y with an equivalent battery .
