2 How to use NetTool I don’t have a lot of time to kill, how do I light this candle? NetTool has two RJ-45 jacks , one on either side of the unit. Plug it in and turn it on…either between two devices like a hub and a PC or directly into a wall plate to check a network drop.

4 Single-Ended Mode What’s lurking behi nd that wall pl ate? Note To optimize discovery, connect NetTool with the device (lik e a PC) off, turn NetTool on, press Aut oTest, t hen turn t he devi ce on. ⇒ Plug an RJ-45 (supplied PN 642774) cable into a network drop or a single net work devic e , such as a hub, PC, server, or pri nt er.
5 Cable Testing You can check cable length, det ect split pairs, or use the wiremap adapter (s uppl i ed PN 1563930) to verify pin-to-pin c on tinuity from the near to the far end of a cable. Cable Test ⇒ Plug the cable to test into the jack on either side of the NetTool.
6 Wiremap When both ends of a cable cannot be connected to NetTool (e. g., one end is in wiri ng cl oset ), use t he external wi re map function. ⇒ At tach the near end of the cable to the NetTool. ⇒ Att ach the wiremap adapt er to the fa r end of the cable.
7 Service Identification ⇒ Plug one end of a cable into the RJ-45 jack on either side of Net Tool and the other end into any RJ-45 wa ll jac k. ⇒ Power up NetTool and select AutoTest .
8 Force Link : For a device that does not respond, NetTool enables the Force Link functi on and displays it as a menu choice below AutoTest . Sele ct Force Link and NetToo l at temp ts to force a connection with th e d evi ce. Check the users manual for more informatio n.
9 Inline Mode They say two ports are better than one… Note NetTool can’t t ell you about what it doesn’t see. NetTool must sense traff i c on a network or device so it can supply protocol or health informatio n. Inline means NetTool is connect ed between two devices simul t aneou sly like a PC and hub.
10 So what? ⇒ Select the PC or Hub icon for more link configurat i on inf ormati on, heal t h, Segment I D, and for PC s − address and server information.
11 Getting Acquainted Skip this page if you have ever used a radio… Batteries Use four (4) AA size batteri es (s upplied PN 1560231) or the optional rechargeabl e batt eries (PN 1572184) as shown (optional charger PN 1572191).
12 Buttons and Indicators Press the buttons al l you want. What you press won’t hurt you or your network. ⇒ Power – press and hold for two seconds to turn on or off. ⇒ Backlight – After NetTool has power, you may turn o n the backlight by simply pressing the power button once quickly.

16 NetTool Menus - PC ⇒ Connect NetTool to a PC and select t he PC icon. The icon displays on t he left or ri ght, depending on where you connected the cable. ⇒ Af ter the PC sends frames, y ou can scan the PC configuration by navigati ng through t he menu.
17 Pro toc ols Exactly what l anguages are these devices speaking to each other? ⇒ Select Protoco ls to v iew the protocols s een on the desktop or network. This can be very useful for findi ng confi gurat ion mismatches. The Protoc ols screen bel ow shows such a mismatch (Apple protocol found on the network si de but not on the P C side).
18 Addres ses Used My name is, my name is… NetTool displays t he best -discov ered name on the PC as well as the IP, IP X , MAC address of the PC. It also lists DHCP or autom ati c pri v a te IP address informat ion.

This helps in situat ions like a network- wide migrati on away from certain prot ocols.
21 Network ⇒ Select the Network icon to view network activity. The icon displays on t he left or ri ght depending on where you connected the cable. Link Conf ig : (described in t he PC section). Health : (described in t he PC section). Protocols : (described in PC section).
22 NetTool Main Menu The main menu items are your starting poi nt. View NetTool’s dis c o very screens t o resolve thos e daily connecti vity battles y ou face.
23 Problems Use NetTool. Solve problems. Get home on time. It’s a beautiful thing. ⇒ Select Prob lems to view the Problem Log. The Problem Log provides a conci s e list of all problems detect ed, from physical l ayer to applicat i on layer problems.

29 Toolkit The right tools when you need them… ⇒ Select Toolk it to a cce ss th e Pin g, H eal th, and Reporter functi ons. 30 Ping Note The Ping option only works in single-ended mode. If you want to ping and are in inline mode you will see . Disconnect one of the RJ -45 cables from the NetTool and then rerun AutoTest .
31 ⇒ Selecting Manual configurat i on enables you to static ally ass ign to your NetTool an IP address t hat complies with your network’ s addressing sc heme. This app lies if your network does not us e DHCP or if you just prefer to manually configure it.
32 Pinging a Single Device From the main menu select Toolkit then Ping to access NetTool’ s pi ng funct i on. You can ping one IP address or a set (Ping Catalog) of address e s t hat you define using NetTool Toolkit. ⇒ To ping a single device, select Add New Device .
33 After defini ng and uploading the lists using NetTool Toolkit PC software, Net Tool displays the catalogs us i ng the names you gave them. ⇒ Select Pin g Ca talo g from the Toolk it menu. ⇒ Select one of the catalogs by highlight i ng it then pressing Select .

35 Reporter Get the fa cts. .. Note To take full advantage of the Reporter function, the PC you use m ust be enabled t o communic ate properl y wi t h NetT ool. Make sure you instal l and start t he NetTool Blaster and NetT ool Toolkit PC soft ware that came with your purchase.
36 Workin g with NetTool R eports NetTool’s Reporter option can s ave the current st ate of what NetTool detects on the PC (or other device) and the network and you can give that collect ed data a unique name. ⇒ Connect NetTool to the device(s) y ou are checking and select AutoTest .
