Operation Throttle-Choke Lever (ECXHN21) Located on the left side of the handle bar . The lev er is used to control engine speed. Moving the throttle to the full forw ard (Choke) position will place the lever in the choke position. The chok e aids in starting a cold engine .

Operation 5. Pull the starter handle lightly until you feel resistance, then pull it sharply . Allo w the rope to return slo wly . 6. F or ECXHN21 Units: Gradually push in the chok e control as the engine warms up . Stopping the Engine 1. Bring the unit to a full stop .

Operation DANGER If the blade brak e clutch system is inoperati ve, the blade will contin ue to rotate when y ou release the blade control bail. Contact with the blade could occur , causing serious injur y . • Check the BBC operation befor e each use.

Operation DANGER If the discharge door does not close completely , the lawn mo wer could throw objects. Thrown objects can result in serious personal injur y or death to the operator or bystander s. • Never open the door to the discharge opening when the engine is running .
Maintenance Maintenance Note: Deter mine the left and right sides of the machine from the nor mal operating position. W ARNING If y ou leave the wire on the spark plug, someone could accidentally start the engine. Accidental star ting of the engine could seriousl y injur e you or other bystanders.

Maintenance Check the Mower Blade Service Interval: Before each use or daily Alwa ys mow with a sharp blade. A sharp blade cuts cleanly and without tearing or shredding the g rass blade. 1. Stop the engine and wait for all mo ving parts to stop . 2. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug ( Figure 10 and Figure 11).

If either end of the blade rotates do wnward, le that end (not the cutting edge).
Maintenance Service Air Filter (Kawasaki Units) Service Interval: Every 25 hours—Clean the foam pre-cleaner (Kawasaki Units). Every 300 hours— Replace the paper air lter (Kawasaki Units). (May need more often in dusty conditions. See the Engine manual for additional information.

If the la wn mo wer creeps forward without the bail engag ed, loosen the belt by turning the drive cable nuts countercloc kwise.
Maintenance Cleaning Clean Grass Build-Up Under Deck Service Interval: Before each use or daily 1. Stop engine, wait for all moving parts to stop , and remov e spark plug wire . 2. T o ensure the best performance, k eep the underside of the la wn mo wer housing clean.
Maintenance 2. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug (see Figure 10 and Figure 11). 3. Pull upward on the bac k of the co v er to unsnap the front and bac k co ver tabs (see Figure 32). 4. Lift off the co ver and brush out all the debris around the belt area.
Maintenance 8. R einstall the cov er plate and torque the screws to 35-45 ft-lb (47-61 N-m). 9. Install the blade, blade support, and the blade bolt. 10. T ur n the la wn mow er upright. 11. Storage Storage Preparing the Fuel System T o prepare the lawn mo wer for off season storage, perfor m the recommended maintenance procedures . Store the la wn mo wer in a cool, clean, dry place . Cov er the la wn mower to keep it clean and protected.
T roubleshooting T roubleshooting Important: It is essential that all operator safety mechanisms be connected and in proper operating condition prior to mow er use. When a problem occurs , Do Not ov erlook the simple causes . F or example: starting problems could be caused by an empty fuel tank.
