PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 15 CHAPTER 4 IP Manager and DNS If you have a fleet of AirLink modems or even if you only have one, it can be difficult to keep track of the current IP addresses, esp ecially if the addresses aren’t st atic but change every time the modems connect to Y our W ireless Service Provider.
PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 16 IP Manager and DNS Fully Qualified Domain Name A domain name is a name of a server or device on the Internet which is associated with an IP address.
PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 17 IP Manager and DNS Dynamic Names When an IP address is no t expected to change, th e DNS server can indicate to all queries that the address can be cached and not look ed up for a long period of ti me.
PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 18 IP Manager and DNS *MODEMNAME: The name you wa nt fo r the m odem. *DOMAI N: The domain name to be used by the modem. *IPMANAGER1 and *IPMANAGER2: The IP address or domain name of th e dynamic DNS server which is running IP Manager .
PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 19 IP Manager and DNS DNS: Using Names Instead of IP addresses The PinPoint-E has the ability to query DNS servers in orde r to translate domain names into IP addresses. This allows you to use domain names in place of IP addresses for most of the configu - ration options requiring IP addresses.
PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 20 IP Manager and DNS Note: If you will be using your PinPoint-E to co mmunicate with an other AirLink modem and both are using IP Manager to translate dynamic IP addresses to domain names, it is recommended that yo u set *DNSUSER to the IP address for IP Manager .
PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 21 CHAPTER 5 Data Communication and Host Modes The PinPoin t-E plays th e part of a HOST when a computer or another device is connected to its serial or Ethernet port. The PinPoint-E can also route data to/from the connected device to the cel - lular network.
PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 22 Data Communication and Host Modes AT M o d e Using a terminal connection, A T commands are used to configur e the modem , command it t o do something, or query a setting. For a full li sting of the A T commands, refer to page 62.

PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 27 Data Communication and Host Modes Reliable UDP adds a simple protocol on top of UDP to provide reliable delivery of data. When data is received from the host serial port, a 2 by te header is added to the data, containing a mes - sage type and a sequence number .
PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 28 Data Communication and Host Modes Public and Private Mode TCP packet assembly is af fected by the values of S50 (P AD Forwarding Time-out) and S51 (P AD Forwarding Character).

PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 30 Data Communication and Host Modes Routing, at its most basic level, is the process of forwarding data on to the correct destination. One component of routing is add ress determination, directing data to the correct address either as its final destination or so it can be forwarded on.
PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 31 Data Communication and Host Modes Keepalive Keepalive is used to test the PinPoint-E’ s connection by pinging an IP address after a specified period of inactivity .
PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 32 CHAPTER 6 Exter nal Inputs & Power Contr ol The PinPoint-E has special features for use in a mobile environm ent. Th e PinPoint-E can be con - figured to monit or the inputs on i ts serial port and respond to speci fic types of events.
PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 33 External Inputs & Power Control When the switch is closed and with *PPINPUTEVT configured, a RAP report will be sent to the destination IP address i ndicating that a contact closure has ta ken place (an external physical event has occurred).

PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 36 CHAPTER 7 Global Positioning System (GPS) The PinPoint-E is equipped with a GPS receiver to ascertain its pos ition to track the movements of a vehicle or other devices which move. The PinPoint-E relays the information of its location as well as other data for use with tracking applicati ons.
PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 37 Global Positioning System (GPS) The GPS data is then transmitted to a central location which uses a tracking application to compile information about location, m ovement rates, and other pertinen t data.
PinP oint-E E DGE/GPR S - User Guide, versi on 2.32 38 Global Positioning System (GPS) Datum In addition to different reporting protocols, the PinPoi nt-E supports the most widely used GPS datum. The GPS datum is the method of ascertaining the posit ion of the GPS dev ice using a spe - cific reference point location.
