PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 14 CHAPTER 4 IP Manager and DNS If you have a fleet of AirLink modems or even if you only have one, it can be difficult to keep track of the current IP addresses, esp ecially if the addresses aren’t st atic but change every time the modems connect to Y our W ireless Service Provider.
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 15 IP Manager and DNS Fully Qualified Domain Name A domain name is a name of a server or device on the Internet which is associated with an IP address.
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 16 IP Manager and DNS Dynamic Names When an IP address is no t expected to change, th e DNS server can indicate to all queries that the address can be cached and not look ed up for a long period of ti me.
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 17 IP Manager and DNS *MODEMNAME: The name you wa nt fo r the m odem. *DOMAI N: The domain name to be used by the modem. *IPMANAGER1 and *IPMANAGER2: The IP address or domain name of th e dynamic DNS server which is running IP Manager .
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 18 IP Manager and DNS DNS: Using Names Instead of IP addresses The PinPoint has the ability to query DNS servers in order to translate dom ain names into IP addresses. This allows you to use domain names in place of IP addresses for most of the configu - ration options requiring IP addresses.
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 19 IP Manager and DNS PPP-Peer Note: If you will be using your PinPoint to comm unicate with ano ther AirLink modem and both are using IP Manager to translate dynamic IP addresses to domain names, it is recommended that yo u set *DNSUSER to the IP address for IP Manager .
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 20 CHAPTER 5 Data Communication and Host Modes The PinPoin t plays the p art of a HOST when a computer or anot her device is connected to its serial or Ethernet port. The PinPoint can also route data to/from the connected device to the cellu - lar network.
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 21 Data Communication and Host Modes AT M o d e Using a terminal connection, A T commands are used to configur e the modem , command it t o do something, or query a setting. For a full li sting of the A T commands, refer to page 59.
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 22 Data Communication and Host Modes If Q=1 (Quiet On), n o result codes are ou tput whatsoever , so there is no response generated by a (non query) command. If Q=0 (Quiet Off), result codes are output.
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 23 Data Communication and Host Modes Some internal hardware req uires upwards of 20 seconds before A T commands can be entered, so be patient if there seems to be no response to A T commands. PassThru Mode allows only specific A T commands .
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 24 Data Communication and Host Modes FIGURE 5. Wireless Ace: T elnet Configuration PPP Mode In PPP mode, the PinPoint acts as a PPP server , providing an IP address, and DNS servers (if available) to the Host.
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 25 Data Communication and Host Modes Slip Mode SLIP mode is entered be using the " AT A S L I P " command. As in PPP M ode, the IP address that the host assumes is af fected by the setting of *HOSTPRIVMODE .
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 26 Data Communication and Host Modes When idle, after the time-out has occurred, th e modem is in A T com mand mode on the serial port, and any valid A T command may be entered during this ti me.
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 27 Data Communication and Host Modes TCP P AD When the PinPoint is in a TCP sess ion, all char acters received on the serial port are assembled into T.

PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 33 External Inputs & Power Control Power Effect on Modem S tate Once the transition from powered on to standby , lo w-p ower mode starts, the modem will change state to A T mode. This results in the current m ode being gracefully termin ated.
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 34 CHAPTER 7 Global Positioning System (GPS) The PinPoint is equipped with a GPS receiver to ascertain its position to track the movements of a vehicle or other devices which move. The PinPoint relays th e information of its location as well as other data for use with tracking app licati ons.
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 35 Global Positioning System (GPS) The GPS data is then transmitted to a central location which uses a tracking application to compile information about location, m ovement rates, and other pertinen t data.
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 36 Global Positioning System (GPS) Datum In addition to different reporting protocols, the Pi nPoint supports the most widely used GPS d atum. The GPS datum is the method of ascertaining the position of the GPS device using a specific refer - ence point location.
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 37 Global Positioning System (GPS) Configuring the PinPoint for GPS T o configure your modem’ s GPS settings, you can us e either W ireless Ace or a terminal connection to configure the modem using A T comm ands ( page 59 ).
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 38 Global Positioning System (GPS) Local Host T o set the Pi nPoin t to rep ort to a local host, one directly connected to the PinPoint’ s serial port, configure the port to be used with S53 - Destination P ort .
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 39 Global Positioning System (GPS) Sending Reports Automatically Y ou can configure the PinPoint to send reports b ased on a time in terval and on the movement of a vehicle (based on it’ s position from one tim e to the next).
PinP oint EDGE /GPRS - User Guide , v ersion 2.32 40 Global Positioning System (GPS) RAP Configuration RAP has additional features which allow reports based on external physical events, input from a 3rd party devices, store and forward processing, etc.
