Overview 9 Overview The Dell™ Serial-Attached SCSI (SAS) 6/iR control ler is Dell’s next generation controller with integrated redundant array of independent disk s (R AID) capabilities. SAS technology is not backward compatible with the pr evio us generation of SAS or SCSI de vices.
10 Overview About RAID R AID is a group of multiple indep endent physical disks that provide high performance by increasing the number of drives used for saving and accessing da ta. A R AID disk subsystem improves I/O performance and data availability .
Overview 11 Integrated Mirroring W ith Integrated Mirroring (RAID 1), data written to one disk is simultaneously written to another disk. If one disk fails, the contents of the other disk ca n be used to run the system and rebuild the failed physical disk.

Hardware Installation 15 Hardware Installation This chapter describes how to install the De ll™ Serial-Attached SCSI (SAS) 6/iR Adapter . NOTE: The SAS 6/iR Integrated is embedded on the sy stem motherboard and does not require any installation. See your sy stem’ s Hardware Owner’ s Manual or the User’ s Guide for instructions.

24 Driver Installation Installing the RPM Package with DKMS Support 1 Uncompress the zipped file of the DKMS-enabled driver package. 2 Install the DKMS package using the command: rpm -Uvh <DKMS package name> . NOTE: The switch -Uvh is intended for the rpm update only .

28 SAS 6/iR BIOS Configuration Utility Starting the Configuration Utility 1 Boot the system. 2 P ress <Ctrl+C> during POST when prompted. If you wait too long and the operating system logo appears, continue to wait until the operating system completes bootup.

IS volumes offer increased ca pacity by combining multiple physical disks into a single virtual disk.

34 SAS 6/iR BIOS Viewing V irtual Disk Properties F ollow these steps to view the properties of IS and IM virtual disks: 1 Select a controller from the Adapter List in the Configuration Utility . 2 Select the R AID P roperties option. • If there ar e no existing virtual disks, you will be prompted to create an IM or an IS virtual disk.
