3 Getting Started Step 1: Unpack th e Box When u npackin g the box contain ing y our C ompaq A 1500 All -In- One, m ake s ure that al l of th e item s list ed below are included. If th ere are any mis sing or dam aged parts , return the A ll-In- One in its original packag ing to the place of purchas e.
4 Step 2: Choo se a Locati on for th e A1500 To help guar antee tro ubl e-fre e o per ati on of your A1500, place it on a f lat, stable su rface. Leav e eno ugh space behin d and in fron t of the A 1500 to allow for easy paper loading, docum ent removal, an d for ope ning the c ontr ol pane l.
5 Step 5: Conn ect the AC Power Co rd This secti on show s you h ow to connect the A1500 t o the electrical outlet us ing the A C power cord. 1. Connect on e end of th e AC pow er cord into the back of t he A1500. 2. Connect th e other end in to a standard A C pow er outlet (120V, 60Hz).
6 6. Insert th e bottom of the black ink cartridge into the right carriag e slot. Press back until the cartridge snaps firm ly in to place. Installing the printer cartridge 7. Insert th e bottom of the color ink cartridge in to the left carriage slot.
7 Step 9: Load Pa per You can load u p to 100 sheets of plain paper into th e paper input tray. To load paper into the A 1500: 1. Insert th e paper into the paper input tray. 15 Printing Repor ts Transmission Report Default Settings When y ou send a fax from the A 1500, you can choos e to: • Print a report if there is an error sending the f ax (this is the default settin.
1 6 Changing Print C artridge s ! CAUTION: When c hanging cart ridges , avoi d touching t he motor locat ed in the fr ont ri ght corner load area, as it can be hot. The sys tem can keep track of th e ink level in each of th e three cartridge ty pes: black, color, and photo.
17 7. If y ou select Old Right cartridges in Step 4, pres s the Options button until th e correct answer display s on th e LCD pan el. Press Start . 8. If any new cartridges were in stalled, then an alignm ent is required. An alignm ent pattern automatically p rints.

19 Checking the Cartridge Cleani ng Printout 1. Exam ine the test pattern. The example below show s a test pattern of all nozzles fun ctioning correctly . T he first pattern printed in each group is from the black (or photo) cart ridge. The second one is from the color cartridge.

Usi ng it fo r nor mal faxing a nd b lac k printing operations w ill prematurely deplete the black ink in the photo cartridge. • Printing black w ith the photo cartridge installed w ill be mu ch slow er than using the black cartridge.
21 Inserting an envelope When printing is com plete: 1. Replace the printer paper in the paper inpu t tray. 2. Squeeze and slide the paper gui de so that it touche s the p ape r. Calibra ting the Scanne r The scanner m ay need calibrating if you s ee vertical streaks in you r scanned or copied im ages.
22 Front Control Pa nel Setup Button From the Setup button on the Al l-In-On e control panel, y ou can select the follow ing features. Mos t of the f eatures along w ith man y m ore features are available from the Compaq A1500 Settin gs Utility on y our compu ter.
23 Using the Compaq A1500 Settings Utility Settings Utility Ov erview The A1500 Settings Utility allow s you to chan ge the defau lt sett ings of y our A1500 All -In- One. F or instan ce, if y ou m ake a copy by press ing th e Copy button and then Start, the defau lt copy settings w ill be used.
24 Print Settings Select the Print button from the m ain settings w indow to access the Print Settings. Print Sett ings W indow The Print Settings gives y ou access to the Contr ol Program an d the Printer Properties . For more information on us ing the Control Program and Printer Properties, see the Printing chapter later in thi s manual.
25 Speed Send Setup Pre ss the Setu p button to set up your list of frequently dialed fax n um bers and to create grou p lists. See the Speed Send section for more inf ormation. Advanced Fax Settings Pre ss the Advanced button to display the advanced fax settings .
2 6 Speed Send Settings The Speed Send Settings are acces sed from the Fax Settings p age. Speed Send Settings Window Your A 1500 inclu des a Speed Send bu tton (th e # button). As the n ame im p lies, you can u se this button to send f axes an d emai ls qui ckly , to one person or to man y people all at on ce.
27 Display Name Once you’ve cho sen a gr oup number, give the gro up a nam e. The group n ame can be up to 14 characters, an d w ill be displayed on the A1500 L CD panel. The LCD panel will indicate whether a Speed Send entry is a group by displa ying the word GROUP by the entry number.
2 8 Scan Settings The Scan Settings w indow controls the s can ty pe and contrast an d the Scan To list. Scan Settings Window Scan To Menu When y ou press the Scan button on the A 1500, a Scan To menu appears on th e LCD di splay panel. The f irst tw o menu entries are User Folder and Email .
29 Clearing an Entry To clear an entry of all inf ormation, f irst select the speed send n um ber you w ish to clear and th en press the Clear button. Scan Type By def ault , the A 1500 perform s norm al resolution color scans. You can chang e the defau lt scan ty pe to three diff erent black se ttings an d three differen t color settings .

31 Control Form Overview The Compaq Con trol Form is a paper docum ent that you can use t o give in struct ions to y our A1500. You can m ark it w ith a pencil or pen and feed it into the scanner. The A 1500 softw are will then read your instruction s and execu te them .
32 Using the C ontrol Form to C opy 1. P ress the Contr ol Form button. A Control Form will print. 2. Check the Copy box at th e top of th e page. 3. The default settings on Control Form are indicated w ith a triang le. You can chan ge these settin gs by checking the desired settin gs in the Copy Settin g section.
33 Printing This chapter provides some bas ic steps f or printing a docum ent. The exact steps for printing may vary f rom one sof tw are program to anoth er. Refer t o you r softw are application’s user m anual for detailed printing steps. Printing a Doc ument To print a docum ent: 1.
34 Booklet The Boo klet option allows y ou to print a document out as a booklet. If the Print Instruction Pag e is checked, a pag e will print directing you how to insert the paper so that the booklet pri nts correctl y. Poster Choose th e Poster option from the Job Finis hing Operations drop d own list to en large the printed docum ent.
35 Options From the options tab, y ou can control some of the behavi or of th e Control Prog ram . The options available w ill vary depending on you r Operating Sys tem. Som e of the options that m ight appear here include m inim izing the w indow w hen a print job starts and enablin g or disabling sound eff ects.

37 Faxing The Com paq A1500 A ll-In -One of fers three w ays to send a fax: • Using the front control panel • Using the Co mpaq Co ntro l For m • Using the com puter When sending color faxes, the receiving fax machine will print in color only if it supports color.
38 Advanced Faxing Featu res In addition to the telephone num b er, you can adjust the f ax resolution and contrast. Use the Menu and Options buttons located on the lef t and righ t side of th e LCD panel. To access the advanced f axing f eatures: 1. Load the documents printed side facing down in th e document in put tray.
39 Speed Sending Up to 70 Speed Send num bers are set up on the h ost comput er using the Com paq A1500 Settings Utility as described in the “Speed Send Settings” section of th e Using the A1500 Settings Utility ch apter. Once the Speed Send num bers are set up, you are ready to beg in faxing with Spee d Send .
40 Confirming Tr ansmis sion When the last p age o f your do cument has b een sent successf ully , the m achine beeps an d returns to th e Ready state. If so mething goe s wrong dur ing the fa x transm ission, an error m essag e appears on the L CD panel.
41 Distinctive ring is a telephone com pany s ervice that enables a us er to use a sin gle telephon e line to answ er several diffe rent teleph one nu mbers . Each phon e num ber is identified by a distinctive rin ging pattern consisting of various com binations of long and short ringing so unds.

44 Advanced Co py Featu res In addition to the copy quantity , you can chang e the copy ty p e, contrast, size, collate, and order from their default settin gs. This is done using the Menu an d Options key s located on the left and rig ht side of the LCD pan el.
45 Scanning Scannin g Overvi ew The Com paq A1500 A ll-In -One of fers three w ays to scan a docum ent. 46 To use this o pt ion, you must have an email p ro gram inst alled on y our comput er, and it m ust support MAPI (a special mail in terface). 51 Alternate Setups Using th e A1500 Extension Feature When sharin g a telephon e line betw een the Com p aq A1500 A ll-In -On e and oth er equipm ent use the EX T connection . If y ou w ish to conn ect more th an one device, a mu ltiple outlet adapter may be required.
52 DRPD The recomm endations above for connecting additional devices still apply if usin g Distinctive Ring Pattern Detection (DRPD). The A1500 w ill only pick up calls made to the telephone nu mber that has th e Ring Pattern that it has learned.

55 Basic Troubleshooting Many times, verif ying that sim ple things are installed and/or conn ected properly solv es any problem. Before continuing in this section, be sure to check: • The A1500 has pow er (the L CD is on) • The ink cartridges are pres ent.
56 Error Messages Occasionally the A 1500 may display an error m essage on the Control Panel’ s Liqu id Crys tal Display (L CD) screen . Often, the error can be easily resolved and the curren t task can be com pleted. T he follow ing table lists the error m essages y ou may encoun ter, the m ost probable cause, an d a sim ple solution.

61 Correcting Probl ems Some of the problems th at you m ay encounter are listed in the previous tables titled Error Messa ges . Occasionally, oth er problems may arise that you coul d solve you rself. They are listed in the f ollowin g tables along with a possible caus e and possib le solutio n.
62 Print Quality Problems Symptom Solution Light or blurred charac ters • T he print cartridge may be running out of ink. • T he print cartridge may need to be cleaned. See “Cleaning Print Cartridges” section . • Mak e sure you are using the c orrect type of paper.
63 Printing and Copying Problems Symptom Solution Printer is on, but nothing pri nts. • T he printer may be improperl y connected to the c omputer. Check the cable connections at the Al l-In-One and at the computer. • Mak e sure that the printer cable i s a standard USB cabl e.
64 Paper Feeding Problems Symptom Solution Paper is jammed • Cl ear the paper jam. See secti on, “ Clearing Document And Paper J ams.” Paper sticks together. • Mak e sure there is not too much paper i n the paper input tray. • Mak e sure you are using the c orrect type of paper.
