6 Chapter 1: Getting Started Welcome Congratulations on purchasing your Pocket PC T erminal. Its compact size and powerful fea tures and functions let you keep your most important business and personal information up-to-date and close at hand.
7 How to T ransfer Palm-size PC Data If you are currently using a Palm-size PC and want to transfer your data to your Pocket PC T erminal, follow this upgr ade procedure. 1. Install Microsoft Activ eSync 3.1 on your desktop computer . For information on installing Activ eSync, see the documentation accompanying the ActiveSync CD.
8 Chapter 2: Basic Skills Learning to use your Pocket PC T erminal is easy . This chapter describes the basic concepts of using and customizing your Pocket PC T erminal.
9 Y ou may see the follo wing status icons on the command bar . Programs Y ou can switch from one program to another by selecting it from the menu. (Y ou can customize which programs you see on this menu. For information, see “ Adjusting Settings, ” later in this chapter .
10 Navigation Bar and Command Bar The navigation bar is located at the top of the screen. It displays the active program and current time, and allows you to switch to programs and close screens. Use the command bar at the bottom of the screen to perform tasks in programs.
11 Pop-up Menus W ith pop-up menus, you can quickly choose an action for an item. For example, you can use the pop-up menu in the contact list to quickly delete a contact, make a copy of a contact, or send an e- mail message to a contact. The actions in the pop-up menus v ary from program to program.
12 T yping Using the Input Panel Use the input panel to enter information in any program on your Pock et PC T erminal. Y ou can either type using the soft keyboard or write using Char acter Recognizer . In either case, the characters appear as typed text on the screen.
13 T o select typed text If you want to edit or format typed text, you must select it first. • Drag the stylus across the text you want to select. Y ou can cut, copy , and paste text by tapping and holding the selected w ords and then tapping an editing command on the pop-up menu, or by tapping the command on the Edit menu.
14 T o con vert writing to text Ta p T ools and then Recognize . If you want to con vert only certain words, select them before tapping Recognize on the T ools menu (or tap and hold the selected words and then tap Recognize on the pop-up menu). If a word is not recognized, it is left as writing.
15 T ips for getting good recognition • Write neatly . • Write on the lines and draw descenders belo w the line. Write the cross of the “ t ” and apostrophes belo w the top line so that they are not confused with the wor d above. Write periods and commas above the line.
16 T o select a drawing If you want to edit or format a drawing, you must select it first. • T ap and hold the stylus on the drawing until the selection handle appears. T o select multiple drawings, deselect the Pen button and then drag to select the drawings you want.
17 Find and Organize Information The Find feature on your Pocket PC T erminal helps you quickly locate information. • On the menu, tap Find . Enter the text you want to find, select a data type, and then tap Go to start the search.
18 Adding or Removing Pr ograms Programs added to your Pocket PC T erminal at the factory are stored in R OM (read-only memory). Y ou cannot remove or modify this softw are, and you ’ ll nev er accidentally lose ROM contents.
19 T o add a prog ram to the Start menu Ta p , Settings , Menus , the Start Menu tab, and then the check box for the program. If you do not see the program listed, you can either use File Explorer on .
20 Chapter 3: Microsoft ActiveSync Using Microsoft Activ eSync, you can synchronize the information on your desktop computer with the information on your Pocket PC T erminal. Synchronization compares the data on your Pocket PC T erminal with your desktop computer and updates both computers with the most recent information.
21 Chapter 4: Microsoft Pocket Outlook Microsoft Pocket Outlook ® includes Calendar , Contacts, T asks, Inbox, and Notes. Y ou can use these programs individuall y or together . For example, e-mail addresses stored in Contacts can be used to address e-mail messages in Inbox.
22 T o create an a ppointment 1. If you are in Day or W eek vie w , tap the desired date and time for the appointment. 2. T ap New . Tap to return to the calendar (the appointment is saved automatically). Tap to select a time. Tap to select a date. Notes is a good place for maps and directions.
23 Using the Summary Screen When you tap an appointment in Calendar , a summary screen is displayed. T ap the top portion of the summary screen to change the appointment.
24 Contacts: T racking Friends and Colleagues Contacts maintains a list of your friends and colleagues so that you can easily find the information you ’ re looking for , whether you ’ re at home or on the road. Using the IR port, you can quickly share Contacts information with other W indows-po wered Pocket PC users.
25 3. T o assign the contact to a category , scroll to and tap Categories and select a categ ory from the list. In the contact list, you can display contacts by category . 4. T o add notes, tap the Notes tab. Y ou can enter text, draw , or create a recording.
26 T o create a task 1. T ap New . Tap to choose from predefined subjects. Notes is a good place for maps and drawings. Tap to return to the task list (the task is saved automatically). 2. Using the input panel, enter a description. 3. Y ou can enter a start date and due date or enter other information by first tapping the f ield.
27 Notes: Capturing Thoughts and Ideas Quickly capture thoughts, reminders, ideas, drawings, and phone numbers with Notes. Y ou can create a written note or a recording. Y ou can also include a recording in a note. If a note is open when you create the recording, it will be included in the note as an icon.
28 Inbox: Sending and Receiving E-mail Messages Use Inbox to send and receiv e e-mail messages in either of these ways: • Synchronize e-mail messages with Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft Outlook on your desktop computer .
29 Using the Message List Messages you receiv e are displa yed in the message list. By default, the most recently recei ved messages are displayed first in the list. Select the service and folder you want to display. Tap to connect and to send and receive e-mail.
30 When you connect to your e-mail server or synchronize with your desktop computer , Inbox downloads only the f irst 100 lines of each new message by default. No e-mail attachments are downloaded. The original messag es remain on the e-mail server or your desktop computer .
31 3. Compose your message. 4. T ap Send when you ’ ve finished the messag e. The message is placed in the Outbox folder on your Pocket PC T erminal and will be deliv ered in one of two ways. • They are transferred to the Outbox folder in Exchange or Outlook on your desktop computer and sent the next time you synchronize.
32 Chapter 5: Companion Programs The companion programs consist of Microsoft Pocket W ord, Microsoft Pocket Excel, Microsoft Money , W indows Media Player for Pocket PC, Microsoft Reader , and Microsoft Pocket Streets. T o switch to a companion program on your Pocket PC T erminal, tap Pro grams on the menu, and then tap the program name.
33 Y ou can enter information in Pocket W ord in one of four modes (writing, drawing, typing, and recording), which are displayed on the Vi e w menu. Each mode has its own toolbar , which you can show and hide by tapping the Sho w/Hide T oolbar button on the command bar .
34 Writing Mode In writing mode, use your stylus to write directly on the screen. Ruled lines are displayed as a guide, and the zoom magnification is greater than in typing mode to allow you to write more easil y . For mo r e inform a tion on w r iting and selecting writing, see Chapter 2 .
35 Drawing Mode In drawing mode, use y our stylus to draw on the screen. Gridlines appear as guides. When y ou lift your stylus of f the screen after the first stroke, you ’ ll see a dr awing box indicating the boundaries of the drawing. Every subsequent stroke within or touching the drawing box becomes part of the drawing.
36 Pocket Excel Pocket Excel works with Microsoft Excel on your desktop computer to give you easy access to copies of your workbooks. Y ou can create new wor kbooks on y our Pocket PC T erminal, or you can copy workbooks from your desktop computer to y our Pocket PC T erminal.
37 Tips f or W orking in Pock et Excel Note the following w hen working in large w orksheets in Pocket Excel. • V iew in full-screen mode to see as much of your w orksheet as possible. T ap Vi ew and then Full Screen . T o exit full-screen mode, tap Restore .
38 Creating Accounts T o create a new account, tap , Programs , Micr osoft Money , and then New . A screen for entering account details with a Required and an Optional tab a ppears. Enter the name and type of the account on the Required tab and the other information you w ant to record on the Optional tab and then tap OK .
39 Using the Account Register T o vie w the Account Register for an account, tap it in the Account Manager . The Account Register displays all transactions for that account that are stored on y our Pocket PC T erminal.
40 Entering T ransactions Once you hav e the Account Register open, tap New to create a ne w transaction. On the Required tab, Microsoft Mone y automa tically creates a withdraw al and enters today ’ s date. If you are not entering a withdraw al, tap the T ype box and select Deposit or T r ansfer .
41 Entering and T racking In vestments In the In vestments screen, you can track the value of the in vestments in your portfolio. The Investments screen displays each investment with the current number of shares, their price, and market v alue. The total market v alue for all of your in vestments is displayed at the bottom of the screen.
42 Windows Media Player for Pocket PC Use W indows Media Player for P ocket PC to listen to digital audio files. T o s witch to Windo ws Media Player , tap and then Windo ws Media Pla yer .
43 Click to download the file. Click to hide the download status. What is Packaged Content? Packaged content is digital music that has been encrypted for distribution to prevent unauthorized access to copyrighted content. Windo ws Media Play er for Pocket PC cannot play packaged content without a valid license.
44 Using the Playlist Manager Use the playlist manager to set the track playback order . All My Music is the default playlist. It contains all digital audio files a vailable for playback on your Pocket PC T erminal and storage card. T o see a list of recently selected playlists, tap Select Playlist .
45 Using the Library The Library is your home page; it displays a list of all books stored on your Pocket PC T erminal or storage card. Y ou can go to the Library by tapping Library on the Reader command bar . Or on a book page, tap the book title and then tap Library on the pop-up menu.
46 Using Reader F eatures Reading a book electronically gi ves you se veral options not a vailable with paper books. These options are available from any book page. Select text by dragging across the te xt on the pag e. Then, ta p an option on the pop-up menu, as described below .
47 Creating Map and Pushpin Files f or Y our P ocket PC T erminal 1. In Microsoft Expedia Streets and T rips 2000, AutoRoute Express Great Britain 2000, or Microsoft MapPoint 2000, draw a box around the area you want to save as a map. 2. On the T ools menu, click Create Map F or Pocket Streets .
48 Chapter 6: Pocket Internet Explorer Use Pocket Internet Explorer to vie w W eb pages in either of the follo wing two ways. • During synchronization with your desktop computer , download your fav orite links, mobile favorites, and mobile channels that are stored in the Mobile Favorites subfolder in Internet Explorer on the desktop computer .
49 If you did not specify an update schedule in step 3, you will need to manually download content to keep the information updated on your desktop computer and Pocket PC T erminal. Before synchronizing with your Pocket PC T erminal, in Internet Explorer on your desktop computer , click T ools and then Synchronize .
50 Using Mobile Channels Mobile channels are sites you subscribe to on your desktop computer . They are stored in the Channels subfolder in the Mobile Favorites folder in Internet Explorer 4.0 or later and are downloaded to your Pock et PC T erminal during synchronization.
51 T o view mobile fav orites and channels 1. T ap the Fa vorites button to display your list of fa vorites. Tap the favorite you want to view. Tap to add or delete a favorite link. 2. T ap the mobile favorite or channel you w ant to view . Yo u ’ ll see the page that was do wnloaded the last time you synchronized with your desktop computer .
52 Chapter 7: Getting Connected Y ou can use your Pocket PC T erminal to exchange information with other Windo ws-powered Pocket PCs as well as your desktop computer , a network, or the Internet. Use the infrared (IR) port on your Pocket PC T erminal to send and recei ve files between tw o Pocket PCs.
53 3. T ap and hold the item, and tap Send via Infrared on the pop-up menu. Y ou can also send items, but not folders, from File Explorer . T ap and hold the item you want to send, and then tap Send via Infrar ed on the pop-up menu. T o recei ve information 1.
54 10. On the Dialing tab, specify your current location and phone type (most phone lines are tone). These settings will apply to all connections you create.
55 Once you hav e created the connection, it appears in , Pr o grams , Connections . T o start the connection, remove y our Pocket PC T erminal from the cradle or disconnect the cable, tap the connection icon, enter your user name, domain, and password, and tap Connect .
56 Connect Directly to an E-mail Server Y ou can set up a connection to an e-mail server so that you can send and recei ve e-mail messages by using a modem or network connection and Inbox on your Pocket PC T erminal. The ISP or network must use a POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail server and an SMTP g atew ay .

58 Appendix A: Character Recognizer Using Character Recognizer , you can write characters directly on y our Pocket PC T erminal screen with your stylus, just as you would on a piece of paper .

60 Appendix B: T roubleshooting Reset the Pocket PC T erminal and clear memory T o reset the P ocket PC T erminal If your Pocket PC T erminal responds slowly , stops responding as expected, or “ freezes, ” try resetting it. A reset causes the Pocket PC T erminal to restart and re-adjust memory allocation.
61 Shorten auto-suspend time While on battery po wer , your Pocket PC T erminal automatically suspends operation if you hav en ’ t touched the hardw are keys or used the stylus for a specif ied period . Maximize battery life by shortening the time. T ap and then Settings .
62 • In Internet Explorer options, delete all files and clear history . In Internet Explorer, tap T ools and then Options . T ap Delete Files and Clear History . • Remov e programs you no longer use. T ap and then Settings . On the System tab, tap Remove Pr ograms .
63 Screen is hard to read Pocket PC T erminal screens without backlighting can be hard to read under reduced light. Position a lamp so that the light shines directly on the screen. If you ’ re having a hard time viewing a document in Notes, try changing the size of the vie w .
64 • Make sure the modem is waiting f or a dial tone. T ap and then Settings . On the Connections tab, tap Modem . T ap your connection and tap Next twice. Make sure W ait for dial tone bef ore dialing is selected. • For international calls, allo w more time for the call to go through.
65 Cable connection problems The following solutions may help if you encounter problems when connecting to your desktop computer . Additional troubleshooting information is av ailable in Connections Help on the Pocket PC T erminal and Activ eSync Help on the desktop computer.
