Basic Printing 4 Us ing the Sheet Feeder and the C as sette Y ou can load paper in both the Sheet F eeder and Cas sette. Loa ding paper in the Sheet Feeder is e asy , and is c onvenient if you fr equently switc h to and print on various s izes or types of paper .

Basic Printing 10 4 Insert the Cas sette into the printer. If the Ca ssette has been e xtended to acc ommodate paper siz es larg er than 5" x 7", the fr ont edge of the ca ss ette w ill extend bey ond the front of the printer. (1) Set the C over on the Cass et te.
Basic Printing 11 5 Prepare the Pape r Output T ray . Y ou can also select the paper sourc e with the printer driver. F or details, refer to “Ch anging the Paper S ource ” in the User’s Gui de . (1) 1 Push the up per center ( ) of the Front C over to open the Paper Output T ray .
Basic Printing 12 Loadin g 4" x 6"- Sized P a per in the C assett e Do not leave photo paper , such as Photo Paper Pro, in the Ca ssette for a long time. T his may cause pap er discolorati on due to na tural agi ng. (5) Select 4" x 6" from Pa per Size in the printer driver.

Basic Printing 16 5 Open the printer properties dialog box. (1) Select Print from the applic ation software’s Fi le menu. The Print dialog box opens. 6 Specify the required settings. (2) Ensure that y our printer is se lected. (3) Clic k Preferences or Properties.

Basic Printing 21 7 Print the document. (1) Clic k Print . Double-clic king the name of your printer in the Printer list displays a dialog that prompts you to confirm the st atus of the print job(s). T o cancel a job in pr ogress, select the des ired document, then clic k Delete .
Advanced Printing 22 Adv anc ed Printing Printing Photographs Dir ectly fr om a Digital C a mer a C onnecting a c ompatible digit al still camera or c amcorder to the printer allows you to print recorded images directly with out using a comp uter. This printer sup por ts both PictBridg e and Canon Bubb le Jet Direct.
Advanced Printing 23 C onnecting to a Digit al C amera Do not c onnect any equipment other th an the camer a ready for Pict Bridge or Canon Bubb le Jet Direct to the Direct Print Port of the printer. If you do so, electric shoc k, fire, or damag e to the camera c ould result.
Advanced Printing 24 (3) T urn on and set up the camera for direct printing. When the connection between the c amera and printer has been es tablished, the POWER lamp on the printer fl ashes once. * The power-on seque nce may differ d ependin g on the model or brand of the camera.

Advanced Printing 26 About “Image optimiz e” If you use a C anon PictBridge-compatib le camera, y ou can select “VIVID”, “NR”, or “VIVID+NR.” (Note that these option s cannot be selected for some models.) z When “VIVID” is selected, green and b lue por tion s of photos are pri nted vi vidly.

Advanced Printing 28 Ac ces sing the Print er Driver The printer properties dialog box c an be open ed from either within an a pplic ation, or directly from the W indows Start menu. This manua l refers to Windows XP operation. The operations m ay vary depending on your operating sy stem.
Advanced Printing 29 Adjusting the Print Quality f or Photographs Impr oving the Qua lity of Printed Im ages T wo important factors control the quality and output of your printed images: Paper and Ink Usin g recommended Canon paper , specialty media, and inks for printing photographs can signific antly improve the quality of your printouts.
Advanced Printing 30 T o manually adjus t Print Quality settings: 1 Open the printer properties dialog bo x. See “ Opening the Printer Properties Dialog Bo x from Y our Application Progra m ” on page 28. 2 On the Main tab, select Cus tom from Print Quality , then click Set to open the Set Print Quality dialog bo x.

T o reduce noi se from images t aken with a digit al camera: The Photo Noise Reduction function reduc es noise from blue portions suc h as the sky , and dark portions of the images tak en with your digital c amera.

Advanced Printing 39 3 Ensure that the proper paper sourc e i s selected. 4 Start Easy-Phot oPrint. This section de scribes how t o print out photographs st ored in the folder on the hard disk. (1) Store the photogr aphs you took with y our digital camera in a folder on the hard disk.
Advanced Printing 40 (2) Clic k the [ T ] [ S ] buttons on the thumbnail of the photograph you want to print to specify the number of copies. Cl icki ng Co r re c t/ E nh an ce corrects phot ographs. For e xample, u sing this fe ature, you can c orrect the red-eye cau sed by the camer a’s fla sh or smooth and be atif y the f acial skin.
Advanced Printing 41 7 Select the lay out and print the photograph. (1) Clic k the Layout/Print tab. (2) Select Borderless (full) . (3) In Windows, click Print . In Macintosh, click Print . When the confirm ation mes sage i s displ ayed, click OK . And then, click Print in the Print dialog box.
Printing Maintenance 42 Printing Mainten anc e Rep lac ing an Ink T ank When replac ing an ink tank, c heck the model number very caref ully . The printer wil l not print properly if the wrong ink tank i s used, or installed in the incorr ect position.
Printing Maintenance 43 Knowing When t o Replac e Ink T ank If an ink tank needs rep lacing, the POWER l amp wil l c hange from green t o orange and fla sh four times, a s soon as printing begi ns. It is important to quick ly identify the empty tank using the BJ Status Monitor (Windows) or error messag es (Macintosh) and replace it.
Printing Maintenance 44 The follow ing mess age is di splayed when ink tank i s empty . Printing will re sume as soon as ink tank is repl aced and the Inner C over and the T op Cover are clo sed.
Printing Maintenance 45 Repla cing Ink T a nks When an ink tank run s out of ink, replac e it using the fol lowing step s. 1 Ensure that the print er is on, and then push the upper c enter ( ) of the Front C over to open the Paper Output T ray . 2 Open the T op Cover , and pull down the Inner Co ver forward to open.
Printing Maintenance 46 4 Prepare a replac ement tank. (1) Unpac k the new ink tank and pul l off the orange t ape. Then, remove the film. (2) Remov e the orang e protective c ap from the bottom of the ink tank and di scard it.
Printing Maintenance 47 5 Insert the ink tank. (1) Insert the ink tank into the Print Head. (2) Press on the mark on the ink tank u ntil the ink tank snaps firmly int o plac e. 6 C lose the Inner Co ver and the T op C over . The Print Head Holder move s to the right.
Printing Maintenance 48 When Printing Bec omes F aint or C olors ar e Incorr ect Wh en p ri nti ng b ecom es fa int or colo rs a re i ncor r ect, even if ink remains in the ink t anks, the Print Head nozzles are probably clogged. Foll ow the procedures below to cl ean the nozzles.
Printing Maintenance 49 Printing the Nozz le Chec k Patt ern Print the nozzle c heck pattern t o determine whether the ink ej ects properly from the Print Head nozz les. Use this fu nction when printed results are b lurred or the color is inc orrect. z Ensure that the Inner C over is closed.
Printing Maintenance 50 4 Print the Nozzle Chec k Pattern. (3) Read the me ssage and c lick Print Chec k Pattern . The nozzle c heck pattern w ill be printed. Cl icki ng Initial Chec k It ems displa ys the items to be c heck ed before cleaning. (4) When the confirmation mess age is disp layed, click OK .
Printing Maintenance 51 3 Open the BJ Printer Utility di alog box. (1) Double-clic k the hard disk icon wher e the printer driver was ins talled, the Application s folder, and then the Utilit ies folder. (2) Double-cl ick the Print Set up Utility icon.
Printing Maintenance 52 Examining the Nozz le Chec k Patt ern The nozzl e chec k p attern should appe ar as follo ws when ink is disc harg ed properly . Examine the nozz le c heck patt ern output by the printer . The nozzle c heck pattern wil l not be printed c orrectly if there is not enough ink.
Printing Maintenance 53 Print Head C leaning C lean the Print Head if miss ing lines or white stripes appear in the nozz le chec k pattern. Note that cle aning the Print Head cause s waste ink to be absorbed in the wast e ink absorber . Cl eaning the Prin t Head c onsumes ink, so perform Print Head C leaning only when neces sary.
Printing Maintenance 54 Print Head C leaning st arts when the POWER lamp starts blinking. Do not perform any other operat ions unti l the Print Head C leaning finishes. Thi s tak es about 30 to 40 sec onds. Cl icki ng Initial Chec k It ems displa ys the items to be c heck ed before cleaning.

Printing Maintenance 61 Aligning the Print Head This oper ation must be carried out when us in g the printer for the first time. Aligning the Print Head positions allows y ou to print without shif ts in the c olor registration. Print head alignment is performed either automatically or manual ly.
Printing Maintenance 62 4 If a mess age warnin g you not to perform other operation s is displ ayed, clic k OK . 5 Chec k the printed pattern. If the pattern is printed as shown below , the Print Head is aligned automatically . The printer is now ready to use.

Troubleshooting 68 Printed Paper Curls or Ink Blots Paper being used is too thin Use High Resolution Paper, Photo Paper Pro or other Canon specialty paper to print images that have high c olor saturation. Col or In te nsi ty se tt in g is too high Red uce th e Intens ity setting in the printer dr iver and try printing again.
Troubleshooting 69 T roub leshootin g Print er Har dwar e Prob lem Possibl e Cause Tr y Th i s Printer Does Not Start or Prin t er Stops During Print Jobs Print Head has overheated due to long periods of continuous printing Stop printin g and turn the printer off f or at least 15 minutes to allo w the Print Head to cool down.
Troubleshooting 70 Prob lem Possibl e Cause Tr y Th i s Cannot Print to End of Job Incorrect page size is sele cted Ensure that the page s ize setting matches the size of the pa per loaded in the printer: z Check t he Paper Size setting from within your application to ensure that it matc hes the size of the p aper loaded.
Troubleshooting 71 P aper Does Not Fe ed Pr operly Prob lem Possibl e Cause Tr y Th i s Pape r Does N ot Feed Properly Inappr opriate paper type is used Check t o see if the paper you ar e printing on is too thic k or curled. See “ Print Media to Avoid ” on page 3.
Troubleshooting 72 P aper Jams Prob lem Possibl e Cause Tr y Th i s Pape r Jams Pape r jams in t he Pape r Outpu t Slot Remove the p aper acco rding to the follow ing procedure. 1. Slowly pull the paper out from the Paper O utput Slot. • If the paper is jammed in the Shee t Feeder, slo wly pull the paper out from the Sheet Feeder .
Troubleshooting 73 Pape r Jams Paper jams insid e the Tr anspor t Unit Remove the p aper acco rding to the follow ing procedure. 1. Open the Rear C over . 2. When you can see the j ammed paper, slo wly pull the paper out. Be careful not to touch the components inside the prin ter .
Troubleshooting 74 Pape r Jams Paper jams insid e the Duplex Tr an sp o r t S e c ti o n Remove the p aper acco rding to the follow ing procedure. 1. Remove the Cassette. If the paper is loaded in the Sheet Feeder , remove the p aper from the Sheet Feeder .
Troubleshooting 75 Handling Err or Mess ages When a printer error occ urs, the POWER/ERROR lamp fl ashes. The number of fla shes indicates the type of error th at has oc curred . C ount the fla shes and tak e the appropriate action to correct the error .
Troubleshooting 76 Te n f l a s h e s Cannot print on both sides of th e page The size of paper ma y not be compatible with Aut omatic Dup lex Printing. Pressi ng the RESUME/CANCEL button will disc harge the paper, and restart pr inting from the front s ide of the next p ape r.
Troubleshooting 77 An Err or Mess age Ap pears on the Sc reen Problem Possible C ause Tr y T h is Writ ing Error/ Output Error/ Commu nication Error Printer is not r eady Ensure th at the POWER l amp lights green. If the POWER lamp is off, turn the printer on.
Troubleshooting 78 Writ ing Error/ Output Error/ Commu nication Error Printer port error V erify th e printer port status. 1. Click Start , right-cl ick My C omputer and select Proper ties . When using versions of Windows other than Windows XP , right-click My Co mpu te r on the desktop and select Propert ies .
