3 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE W HAT Y OU N EED T o use the scanner and softwar e, you need the follo wing: ■ IBM PC (or 100-percent compatible) P entium or equivalent .
S TEP 1: I NSTALLING THE S CANNER S OFTWARE 4 S TEP 1: I NSTALLING THE S CANNER S OFTWARE T o install the scanner softwar e: 1. S tart Microsoft Windows and make sur e that no other applications are running. 2. Insert the CD into your computer ’ s CD-R OM drive.

When the CD window appears, click the P aperP ort Deluxe button and follow the instructions on the scr een to install the scanner software on your computer . When you are finished installing the softwar e, a message instructs you to connect the scanner to the computer .
S TEP 2: C ONNECTING THE S CANNER 6 T o connect y our Visioneer OneT ouch 5600 scanner : 1. Plug the USB cable on the back of y our scanner into any USB port on your computer . If the plug does not attach easily , make sure that you are plugging it in correctly .
7 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE S TEP 3: C HECKING O UT Y OUR S CANNER The V isioneer OneT ouch 5600 scanner softwar e comes with special software, called the O neT ouch software, that allo ws you to use your scanner .
S TEP 3: C HECKING O UT Y OUR S CANNER 8 3. Choose About from the shortcut menu. A dialog box confirms that the scanner is pr operly connected. 4. Click OK to close the dialog box. That’ s it. Y our scanner is ready to scan. See “Scanning: Three W ays ” on page 10.

If the light still doesn ’ t come on, plug the power adapter into another electrical outlet. • Is the scanner ’ s locking tab in the locked position? S lide the locking tab to the unlocked position.
S CANNING : T HREE W AYS 10 If you try all the troubleshooting pr ocedures described abo ve and in the Readme file, and the scanner icon still has a r ed X through it, you may have a malfunctioning scanner . Please see the technical support card that you receiv ed with your scanner for technical assistance telephone numbers.
11 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE • Scan from the P aperP ort software (or other T wain software) T o scan from the P aperP ort software, start the software, and then click the T wain icon on the P aperP ort Command Bar . Y ou can also scan from other T wain software.
S CANNING FROM THE B UTTON P ANEL ON THE S CREEN 12 During scanning, the scan pr ogress window sho ws a small copy of the image, as illustrated by this example: When the scan is complete, the scanned image appears in the destination software.
13 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 2. Click the button you want to use to scan. The scanner starts scanning the item; the messages about the scanning appear abo ve the Windo ws taskbar; the progress window shows the image as it is scanned.

The tabs across the top of the dialog bo x correspond to the buttons.

Select the application that y ou want to automatically open to display or process the scanned image. Select Configuration —the list of the button ’ s scan configurations.

L EARNING ABOUT THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 18 3. Click a selection in the S elect Configuration list to choose a new scan configuration for the selected scanner button. The configurations in the list are pr eset for the application you select in the application list.
19 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE A DJUSTING S CAN S ETTINGS AND P AGE S ETTINGS When scanning using a configuration that y ou created y ourself , you can adjust that configuration ’ s scan settings and page settings. F or example, if the scanned image is too dark, y ou can adjust the brightness of the scan setting.
L EARNING ABOUT THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 20 2. In the S elect Configuration list, click the configuration that y ou want to adjust. F or example, the following figure sho ws a configuration named S pecial Scan for Dar k P rint (which you would have created earlier).

F or example, letters and memos ar e usually scanned in black and white. Select G rayscale to scan items such as documents containing drawings or black and white photographs.

Enter the horizontal and v er tical page dimensions in the box es. AutoC rop —S elect this option to let the scanner automatically determine the size of the item being scanned.
23 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE S ETTING P REFERENCES The prefer ences apply to each button and to the scanner . T o set pr efer ences: 1. On the Configuration dialog bo x, select the tab for a button to set its prefer ences.

When you click the button ’ s tab on the Configuration dialog box, its list of destination applications include all of the applications on y our computer that fall into these categories.

S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 26 S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE Instead of using a scanner button, y ou can scan directly from the P aperP ort software. This is particularly helpful when you ’ re using P aperP ort to file and save your scanned items.
27 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. Choose the Visioneer Scan Manager , and then click Select . Y our scanner is now set to scan.
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 28 The Scan Manager appears. 4. F rom the list of Scanner Settings labeled “Scan P age F or ,” select the most appropriate setting for the item y ou ’ re scanning. In the example abo ve, the selected setting is “Color D ocument-F aster .

I f you want to change the scanner setting for the item, click one of the options in the list to “Scan P age F or .” F or example, to scan a black and white image instead of a color photo, select Black & White Photo in the list.
A DJUSTING S CANNER S ETTINGS 30 9. T o select the area to scan, drag the bor ders of the selection rectangle surrounding the pr eview image to reduce or enlarge the ar ea. 10. If you want to pr eview the item again with the new settings, click the P review button again on the Scan M anager .
31 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE S ELECTING A P REDEFINED S CANNER S ETTING In the Scan M anager , you can select one of the pr edefined scanner settings from the list “Scan P age F or .” The settings are described in the following table.
A DJUSTING S CANNER S ETTINGS 32 Selecting the pr oper scanner setting befor e scanning produces the best results for a scanned item. The scanner setting determines the resolution of the item and the number of possible shades of gray or color . The symbols next to the setting names indicate the scan mode—color , grayscale, or black and white.
33 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 5600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Size —The page size for the image. If y ou want to use one of the pr eset sizes, click the drop-do wn arrow and choose the size fr om the list. If y ou want to create a custom siz e, click on the pictur e window and drag the mouse.
A DJUSTING S CANNER S ETTINGS 34 4. Click the Save As button. The Sav e As dialog box appears. 5. T ype a name for the new scanner setting. 6. Click Save . The new setting is added to the list of “Scan P age F or ” options at the top of the dialog box.

C LEANING THE S CANNER G LASS 36 C LEANING THE S CANNER G LASS Scanning items that have ex cessive amounts of dirt or dust may dirty the glass. T o ensure the best quality scanned item, wipe the scanner glass with a soft clean cloth to rid the glass of dust or other debris.
