F ollo wing the instructions in this manual will enable you to obtain optimum performance and listening enjoyment from your ne w CD Receiv er .
2 Impor tant Safeguar ds 1. Read Instructions —All the safety and operating instructions should be read before the appliance is oper- ated. 2. Retain Instructions —The safety and operating instructions should be retained for future reference.
3 Important Safeguards— Continued 18. Object and Liquid Entry —Nev er push objects of any kind into the appliance through openings as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short-out parts that could result in a fire or electric shock. Nev er spill liquid of any kind on the appliance.
4 Precautions 1. Recording Copyright Unless it’ s for personal use only , recording copyrighted material is illegal without the permission of the cop y- right holder . 2. AC Fuse The AC fuse inside the CR-L5 is not user -serviceable. If you cannot turn on the CR-L5, contact your Onkyo dealer .
5 Precautions— Continued Memory backup The CR-L5 uses a battery-less memory backup system in order to retain radio presets and other settings when it’ s unplugged or in the case of a power f ailure. Although no batteries are required, the CR-L5 must be plugged into an AC outlet in order to charge the backup system.
6 Supplied Accessories Check that the following accessories are supplied with this unit. * In catalogs and on packaging, the letter added to the end of the product name indicates the color of the CR-L5. Specifications and operation are the same regardless of color .
7 Bef ore Using the CR-L5 1 Open the battery compar tment, as shown. 2 Insert the two supplied batteries (AA/ R6) in accordance with the polarity diagram inside the battery compart- ment. 3 Close the battery compar tment. Notes: • The supplied batteries should last for about six months, although this will vary with usage.
8 Contr ols & Connectors For detailed information, refer to the pages in parenthesis. A ST ANDBY/ON button (16) Sets the CR-L5 to On or Standby . B ST ANDBY indicator (16) Lights up when the CR-L5 is in Standby mode. It also lights up when the CR-L5 receiv es signals from the remote controller .
9 Controls & Connector s— Continued 1 TRA CK indicator Appears when the CD input source is selected. 2 MEMOR Y indicator (21) Lights up when memory playback is used. 3 RANDOM indicator (21) Lights up when random playback is used. 4 REPEA T indicator (21) Lights up when repeat playback is used.
10 Controls & Connector s— Continued A ON button— T urns on the CR-L5. B ST ANDBY button— Sets the CR-L5 to Standby . C INPUT [ ] [ ] selector buttons— Used to select sound sources. D Number buttons— Used to select CD tracks and to set the clock.
11 Connecting Y our Other Components to the CR-L5 • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ v e completed all connections, including connections on page 12, speaker connections on page 13, and antenna connections on page 14. • Refer to the manuals supplied with your other compo- nents before connecting them.
12 Connecting -compatible Components W ith (Remote Interactiv e) you can control your - compatible Onkyo cassette tape deck or CD recorder with the CR-L5’ s remote controller, and use the follo wing.
13 Connecting Y our Speakers Before you connect your speakers, read the follo wing: • Disconnect the po wer cord from the wall outlet. • Read the instructions supplied with your speakers.
14 Connecting Antenna This chapter explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna, and how to connect com- mercially av ailable outdoor FM and AM antennas. The supplied indoor FM antenna is for indoor use only . 1 Attach the FM antenna, as shown.
15 Connecting Antenna— Continued If you cannot achiev e good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a commercially av ailable outdoor FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, b ut usable results can sometimes be obtained when installed in an attic or loft.
16 Po wering Up and Setting the Cloc k Before connecting the power cord, complete all connections (see page 11 to 15). 1 Connect the power cor d to a suitable wall outlet. The CR-L5 enters Standby mode, and the ST ANDBY indicator comes on. 2 To turn on the CR-L5, press the [ST ANDBY/ON] button or the remote controller’ s [ON] button.
17 Po wering Up and Setting the Clock— Continued Y ou can set the CR-L5 so that the time is displayed while the CR-L5 is in Standby mode. 1 With the CR-L5 turned on, press and hold the CR-L5’ s [ST ANDBY/ON] but- ton for more than 2 seconds. To turn off the time display , repeat this procedure.
18 Po wering Up and Setting the Clock— Continued If you cannot set the clock by using the ACCUCLOCK function, you can set it manually . In this case, the A CCU- CLOCK function will not automatically update the clock each day . Y ou can set the clock while the CR-L5 is on or in Standby .
19 Using the CR-L5 1 Use the INPUT [ ]/[ ] b uttons, or the remote controller’ s INPUT [ ]/[ ] but- tons to select one of the follo wing sound sources: CD, FM or AM, CD-R, T APE, TV/LINE. The currently selected source is shown on the display . In the following e xample, CD has been selected.
20 Pla ying CDs 1 Press the [ ] button to open the disc tray , put the CD on the tray with the label-side facing up, and press the [ ] button a gain to close the tra y . Be sure to put 8-cm discs in the center of the tray . 2 Press the Play [ ] b utton to start play- back.
21 Playing CDs— Continued W ith the Repeat function you can play all tracks repeatedly . 1 During playbac k, press the remote controller’ s [REPEA T] b utton. The REPEA T indicator appears on the display and all tracks are played repeatedly . 2 To cancel Repeat playbac k, press the [REPEA T] button again.
22 Using the Radio 1 Use the INPUT [ ]/[ ] b uttons, or the remote controller’ s INPUT [ ]/[ ] but- tons to select AM or FM. 2 Use the TUNING [ ]/[ ] b uttons, or the remote controller’ s [ ]/[ ] buttons to tune the radio.
23 Using the Radio— Continued Y ou can select previously stored presets as follo ws. 1 Use the INPUT [ ]/[ ] b uttons, or the remote controller’ s INPUT [ ]/[ ] but- tons to select AM or FM. 2 Use the PRESET [ ]/[ ] b uttons, or the remote controller’ s [ ]/[ ] but- tons to select a preset.
24 Using the Radio— Continued Y ou can name your radio presets for easy identification. Names can be up to eight characters long. 1 Select the preset that y ou want to name. See page 23 for information on selecting presets. 2 Press and hold down the [DISPLA Y] button f or about 3 seconds.
25 Other Functions W ith this function you can temporarily mute the output of the CR-L5. 1 Press the remote controller’ s [MUT - ING] button. The output is muted and the MUTING indicator flashes on the display , as shown. 2 To unmute the CR-L5, press the [MUT - ING] button a gain, or adjust the remote controller’ s volume [ ]/[ ] buttons.
26 Timers The CR-L5 has four timers that you can use to automatically turn it on and off at certain times and on certain days of the week, so you can listen to, or record your fa vorite programs.
27 Timers— Continued If you select AM or FM, use the Up/Down [ ]/[ ] buttons to select a pr eset, and then press [ENTER]. In this example, preset #2 has been selected. 4 Use the Up/Down [ ]/[ ] b uttons to select Once or Every , and then press [ENTER].
28 Timers— Continued Y ou can turn timers on or off as necessary . This can be use- ful when, for example, you’ re on holiday and you don’t want to be wok en up by the timer that you normally use as an early-morning radio alarm. 1 Press the [TIMER] button repeatedl y to select the timer that y ou want to turn off.
29 Tr oubleshooting If you hav e any trouble using your CR-L5, check the follo wing table for possible causes and remedies. If you still can’t resolv e the issue yourself, please contact your Onkyo dealer . Tr ouble P ossible Cause Remedy Can’t turn on the CR-L5? The power cord is not connected properly .
30 Tr oubleshooting— Continued Tr ouble P ossible Cause Remedy AM reception is hinder ed by a high-pitched noise? Interference caused by your TV . Mov e the AM loop antenna as far a way as possible from your TV . Mov e the CR-L5 as far away as possible from your TV .
31 Tr oubleshooting— Continued Tr ouble P ossible Cause Remedy It takes a long time to locate certain tracks? The disc is dirty . Remov e the disc and clean it (page 6). The disc is very scratched. Buy a new disc. The clock is wrong? CT (Clock T ime) information has been taken from a radio station in another time zone.
