Manageable 8/9-Por t Switch BASIC FUNCTIONS In general, the D-GES7600 is responsible for switching both VLAN tagged and untagged frames from a r eceiving por t to one or more transmitting ports.
PLE ASE NO TE: I. Half-duplex mode uses back pr essure flow control to pr event the receiving buffer from being overrun by data fr om a source node. II. Full-duplex mode uses 802.3x flow control standar d to prevent fast data traffic from overrunning slow data traffic.
User ’s Manual 7 Manageable 8/9-Por t Switch MUL TICAST SWIT CHING For multicast switching, the D-GES7600 checks whether the received frame is a BPDU . If a BPDU is received, the switch forwar ds the frame to the CPU for processing by the spanning tree pr otocol.
User ’s Manual 8 Manageable 8/9-Por t Switch VL AN A virtual L AN (VL AN) is a network of computers or peripherals that behave as if they ar e connected to the same wire, even though they may actually be physically located in different locations of a LAN.
BROADCAST CONTROL In traditional networks, traffic broadcasts to all netw ork devices, whether they are the intended recipients or not . However , VLANs can be set up to contain only those devices that need to communicate with each other . As a result , VL ANs considerably reduce network congestion.
Manageable 8/9-Por t Switch User ’s Manual 10 REMO TE VL AN MEMBERSHIP Additionally to providing network management tools that allow netw ork administrators to statically add and delete VLAN member por ts, the switch also supports GVRP (GARP VL AN Registration Protocol).
